Would you be annoyed at a work colleague….

If they worked shorter days (mornings) because of a cancer diagnosis/treatment two years ago?

OP posts:
ImNotDancing · 15/02/2022 22:42

No, their work arrangements would be nothing to do with me

FantasticFebruary · 15/02/2022 22:42

Sorry if it was you that had the cancer - how are you doing?

There's too little information for me to answer your question, sorry.

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 15/02/2022 22:43

Not unless they purposely left all the difficult stuff to the afternoon workers.

No because presumably they’re getting paid a part time wage as well, it’s up to them.

spotcheck · 15/02/2022 22:43

I'm assuming they get paid less, and the arrangement was approved by management?

Brideandprejudice · 15/02/2022 22:44

You obviously need to provide more information.

Saltyquiche · 15/02/2022 22:44

No

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 15/02/2022 22:45

Of course not! I’d assume that they needed that change to their working pattern.

I’d only be annoyed with management if they had failed to ensure that any of their work has not been redistributed fairly.

CalIie · 15/02/2022 22:45

No, because it would be none of my business. I’d assume they’d reached the arrangement with the boss and it worked well for both of them.

Violetmo0n · 15/02/2022 22:46

Not at all.

2DogsOnMySofa · 15/02/2022 22:47

No. None of your business

GreenClock · 15/02/2022 22:47

No, as long as others weren’t expected to stay later in the afternoon.

I’m assuming the person hasn’t fully recovered.

DysmalRadius · 15/02/2022 22:49

Do they work shorter hours because of a cancer diagnosis, or was that just the trigger for a flexible working arrangement to be put in place that has continued because both sides are happy with it?

TangleMosaic · 15/02/2022 22:55

No, and anyone who would be annoyed is obviously very ignorant of the impact a cancer diagnosis and treatment can have on a person, even if they achieve complete remission.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/02/2022 23:00

Why would you? They are being paid less presumably and had a good reason to reduce hours. If it’s (really) having an impact on you, sort that out separately

TyrannosaurusRegina · 15/02/2022 23:01

No, the lasting effects of chemo and other treatments can leave a person fatigued (amongst other things) for years afterwards. I wouldn't judge anyone for any disability adjustments that they needed.

No I wouldn't be annoyed, I'd assume that they had ongoing health issues, which meant that they were unable to manage working full time.

DinasCopUniform · 15/02/2022 23:08

Maybe they've realised they don't want to work full-time? It really isn't anyone else's business.

Joy2TheWorld · 15/02/2022 23:11

Nowt to do with me! (would be my attitude to it, as well as hoping they were ok/better)

TTstormtrooper · 15/02/2022 23:11

Well given that the last person I worked with who had cancer treatment two years ago died in December, no I don't think I would mind TBH.

Do you also object to people who are on mat leave? Or disabled people who have reasonable adjustments made? Or is it just your cancer stricken colleague you've taken issue with.

DoNotTouchTheWater · 15/02/2022 23:12

I wouldn’t be annoyed that a colleague was part time, whatever their reasons. It makes no difference to me whether it’s for health reasons, family reasons, or even if they want to spend the afternoons sitting in their pants playing videogames. It’s none of my business.

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 15/02/2022 23:16

Yes if it meant they were not getting their work done and leaving it to me.

Yes if I found out they were getting a full time wage for only working mornings (even though I know it is not my business -but I would be so may as well say)

No apart from that

Tanfastic · 15/02/2022 23:16

I wouldn't be annoyed at all with the colleague. Sounds like there's a bigger issue though.

If, however, your manager had agreed an arrangement that meant your colleagues workload was then put on you as well as your own then ...I'd be taking it up with the manager to get another member of staff.

HP79 · 15/02/2022 23:19

As someone who received their first cancer diagnosis two years ago, I can assure you that cancer treatments can cause long-lasting or even permanent ill effects, both physically and mentally. A reduction in hours sounds perfectly reasonable to me. The last thing someone dealing with cancer needs is judgment from their colleagues.

Did you know that a cancer diagnosis (in the UK) means that that person is forever covered by the Disability Discrimination Act?
