How do I stop nosy bastards?

Moving isn't an option.

We live on a main road and it seems it's human nature to look in a window when walking past and hundreds of people walk past every day.

I don't want to lose the light but I need to make it so that people can't see in! Please help!

Put reflective film on, it turns it to a mirror from there side while not blocking any light for you inside

cookiemonster2468 · 15/02/2022 05:05

If you do the reflective film, people might still look in for the mirror - still off putting even if you know they can't see anything!

Really the only option that will work is net curtains or similar - you will lose some light unfortunately but that is the compromise when you live on a main street.

Needaholiday101 · 15/02/2022 05:17

Plantation shutters, you can have the top ones open for the light and the bottom half of the window tilted so people can't see in.

unidentia · 15/02/2022 05:18

Removable window film, sticks on with water, different opacities available

Diqgeneration · 15/02/2022 08:55

Net curtains or self adhesive frosted film over part of your windows is the answer.

I was thinking what a shame it is that street after street of houses have those grey blinds constantly shut. Not because I want to look in, but because they essentially don’t have the benefits of windows at all.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 15/02/2022 10:28

I have some cafe nets up at the front window.

pawpaws2022 · 15/02/2022 10:31

Day/night blinds

You can get the ones that look like stripes
Or ones with two layers of material, one layer means you can see out but people can't see in

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/02/2022 10:31

Opaque window film.

pawpaws2022 · 15/02/2022 10:33

The privacy ones are called magic screen

HowlingKale · 15/02/2022 10:34

Longer term is there space for planting. They draw the wandering eye ime.

HoppingPavlova · 15/02/2022 10:35

One way film so you can see out and don’t lose your light, but none can see in.

LupeDeLoop · 15/02/2022 10:36

We had this issue in our previous home. We got some of that frosted decal stuff, put it about a 1/4 of the way up from the bottom then had the blinds down to the top of the decal. It was still really bright and I could still see out.

StarryGazeyEyes · 15/02/2022 10:38

I made some voile curtains when I lived in similar circumstances - hung just high enough to stop people looking in, but still got full light above, and filtered light through the voiles. Good alternative to nets, if they aren't your thing. Just hung on wire and hooks.

Funnyname00 · 15/02/2022 10:54

Plantation shutters

HTruffle · 15/02/2022 11:22

Wave at people, that soon stops them.

TigerLilyTail · 15/02/2022 11:26

My parents have this issue and have blinds. They just turn the lights on during the day.

Shadappayourface · 15/02/2022 11:35

People still use net curtains?? 😬

Like others have suggested - voiles, opaque film or shutters will stop this.

mizzo · 15/02/2022 15:46

We used to have frosted window film when we lived on a busy road.
It's annoying but as you say human nature. I walked past a house today, a movement caught my eye which was met with a glare Blush

HufflepuffPride · 15/02/2022 16:06

Net curtains are useless when the light is on at night from my recollection, plus they are horrendously dated.

ANameChangeAgain · 15/02/2022 16:08

I love shutters.

Whyemseeaye · 15/02/2022 16:42

We have café style shutters. We can keep them closed so people can’t see in but we still get lots of light and our lovely view is still visible.

ABitOfAShitShow · 15/02/2022 16:56

I had a blind where I could see out (and the light came in) but nobody could see in. Just be mindful that at night, with the lights on in the house, it's the other way round! Just before you give someone an eyeful. Grin

ABitOfAShitShow · 15/02/2022 17:01

Oh also - another vote for shutters. I wouldn't say mine let in as much light (unless super open which defeats your privacy point) but they're good and look lovely IMO.

What is the difference between net and voile curtains? I've never had either. I thought all those semi transparent curtains were net and voile was just a fancy name for them 😂
Curiousmouse · 15/02/2022 23:30

Nets have more holes.
