How do I stop nosy bastards?

Moving isn't an option.

We live on a main road and it seems it's human nature to look in a window when walking past and hundreds of people walk past every day.

I don't want to lose the light but I need to make it so that people can't see in! Please help!

Shutters! Or install a fake camera by your window, many people would feel embarrassed if they think their nosiness is being recorded and think twice next time they pass.

Regular naked dancing. I'd assume that would stop most people looking Grin

I just bought lovely light grey voile for my windows as have ordered grey wooden slat blinds have to be made as windows very long and cannot buy off rack which is a pity. You can also buy a plastic rod that fits into each side of the window so you do not have to drill which is great. B&q or any shop like that should have it. As someone else mentioned you can also buy clear stick on film with different designs to cover the lower half of window and still have light come in. The voile does look lovely though but cannot wait get blinds as people can slightly see in when have lights on, not many people pass but still makes me feel they can as neighbours have taken to looking in.

You can also get day and night blinds which are fairly cheap and are lovely. Give privacy and let's light in the day but can close them at night. I wish could get these also but do not fit my windows. This would be the best option.

It depends. My parents live on the high street in an area with a lot of tourists so it's different people each time. I agree that it's not necessarily people's fault that they look in. The eye is drawn. There are loads of options for blinds, shutters, voiles, etc.

Are the shutters on the inside or outside?

Venetian blinds are a good middle ground option, not as cheap as films or nets, but very affordable and cheaper than shutter style. You can easily vary how open they are, and come in aluminium or wood, and all different colours. I am totally guilty of looking in people's houses, it's more being attracted by movement and looking without thinking.

I lived in central London in a 1st floor flat. It wasn't passers by that looked in, but there was a bus stop at our front door, so from our window, we could look eye to eye with the top floor passengers in buses!!! I stuck on opaque film to the bottom of the window. It didn't block light at all. Another option as already mentioned are shutters, which you can angled up so you get light but not see the passers by.

TBH- when I walk past homes and the home owner is sitting there on their sofa in their PJ's or is visible from the pavement, I find it very odd! I don't specifically walk along staring in homes ,but especially in the evening when its getting dark, and the inside of a home is lit up, its far more obvious to glance and see someone inside. When I pass homes like this, I do wonder WHY they don't have shutters or at least some way to screening themselves??? Do they like the attention? Are they voyers or just can't be bothered? Confused

OP- how long have you lived there? What do your neighbours use to screen passers by? Could you grow climbers along the border if you don't want anything in the actual windows?

Alliswells · 16/02/2022 08:47

If you catch anyone staring in just shout "do you wanna come in and look out the window instead"

I kid you not I was in someone's house a few years ago and they shouted this out to people staring in ... I was mortified

This is why net curtains were invented.

Shadappayourface · 16/02/2022 11:43

@turnaroundtime net curtains are ugly, outdated 80's furnishing, tend to have patterns or holes in them, very popular with the elderly.

Voiles are smooth and modern equivalent that look much nicer.

blacksax · 16/02/2022 15:14

Voiles are smooth. Too damned smooth if you have cats. One claw and they're fucked.
