Is it me? Am I being too sensitive??

It's sexist nonsense. So many of the books ion schools are decades old..

ShortnStout · 13/02/2022 17:23

No you’re not. That’s inappropriate. The word ‘sexy’ has no place in a primary school - never mind the undertones. Ugh.

Is that Oxford reading tree!?

StylishMummy · 13/02/2022 17:24

The word sexy is a bit Hmm - but as PP said, some of the books are from the 70s and beyond

I was all ready to say that you probably are being but actually I don’t think you are. I am a teacher and I haven’t seen that word in a year two reading book. It looks like an Oxford Reading Tree one from the print, which one is it? I don’t think that Year 2 (or even primary to be honest) need to read the word sexy.

It looks like some of the authors and illustrators from Oxford reading tree, but in a different series?
Inappropriate, imo.

BlondeWidow · 13/02/2022 17:28

It was released Sep 1999 Confused

I would bring it to the attention of the teacher so that they can take it off the shelf.

Hollytreenew · 13/02/2022 17:28

I’ll be making sure we don’t have that one in school as well!

BlondeWidow · 13/02/2022 17:29

What do I say to my child's teacher about this?! She isn't particularly friendly at the best of times. I fear it won't go down well, whatever I say

Feenie · 13/02/2022 17:32

It’s Wolf Hill - an Oxford Reading Tree series for older readers. It’s ancient! We binned ours years ago.

Feenie · 13/02/2022 17:33

I’d just show her the page - she can’t argue!

ThePlantsitter · 13/02/2022 17:33

I would take it to her and show the page and say 'I was a bit surprised by this page' and take it from there. I'm sure they just haven't looked at that book for ages. You're not being over sensitive though; totally inappropriate!

cansu · 13/02/2022 17:33

I wouldn't expect to see it, but I would also ask myself why I was so unhappy about it. What harm has it done to the child to read the word? How many children watch shows like Strictly where they might hear that word and see people dressed in a 'sexy' way. We seem to have a very prurient attitude in the UK. I think I would have done a double take at the word in a kids' book but I think it's worth asking why and how it is inappropriate.

Hollytreenew · 13/02/2022 17:34

I would just say that you don’t think that it is appropriate for children to read the word sexy in a book that is designed for them to learn how to read and that you thought you would bring it to their attention incase another child saw it. You could say that your child is fine (if they are!) to sweeten the conversation but that you don’t want other parents to need to have awkward conversations. If you don’t want to talk to the teacher you could email them? Email the office?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/02/2022 17:34

School will probably be happy to change it and will get rid. One of my dc brought home a book that talked about murder and people being stabbed in their sleep! They were in yr2 I think at the time. A book that was for much older children with low reading age had got muddled in with the younger child books!

Hasselhoffsheadband · 13/02/2022 17:35

Yes, it's totally inappropriate!

Also wondering about the context as well.....Confused

BlondeWidow · 13/02/2022 17:35

@Feenie

I’d just show her the page - she can’t argue!
I'll get looked at like something she stepped in and told "Ok fine" then she'll walk away.

I'm the only lone parent in the class and so I tend to be treated like a kind of scummy criminal (very far from scummy, used to be middle class before my husband died) but now I carry the 'single mum' label so 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s from a series designed for older children who haven’t learned to read fluently yet. It should never have been put in a Y2 clasroom. The Wolf Hill logo in the corner is the mark of the series.

NuffSaidSam · 13/02/2022 17:38

😂 I'd love to know the story!

But, it does seem wildly inappropriate.

ThePlantsitter · 13/02/2022 17:40

For me it's having to explain what sexy means and why the nan not dressing sexy meant she deserved to win, and whether I agree with that thinking it not. All sorts of stuff I don't want to get into when helping my kids learn phonics tbh (possibly valid conversation that it may be).

OP if she's not going to react well say 'I think you need to get rid of this book' and then it's very clear you've said it! If she's mardy-faced about it that's her problem really.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 13/02/2022 17:41

I was expecting you to being precious but that’s awful! Completely in appropriate.
