@DickMabutt73962 Howling? Well it would appear by all the other responses that you're the only one 'howling' love
Calm down love! I think it’s absolutely inappropriate, I was ‘howling’ because I couldn’t believe it was actually printed in a book for children Hmm but I see you’ve reported it and my humour at this ridiculous printing of a book has gone over your head.

Do yourself a favour and lighten up Grin

If you don't want it speak to the teacher about it, ask if you can speak to the English or reading leader. I'm pretty sure they won't be aware this is in there and will check the books to stop these going home.

Unfortunately these ancient books do seem to find their way into classrooms/libraries in schools, no one knows where they appear from but they always find a way! Luckily they’re normally just missing pages but occasionally are inappropriate.

I once found a book featuring a racist poem in our infant school library, luckily I found it before the kids did. Sad

Sorry the teacher doesn’t treat you nicely but you’d certainly be doing the right thing flagging it up and she should be thanking you.

@DickMabutt73962 To be fair, that wasn't very obvious from what you wrote, was it!?

@BlondeWidow

What do I say to my child's teacher about this?! She isn't particularly friendly at the best of times. I fear it won't go down well, whatever I say
I was a teacher for years. I’d suggest something like “Hi, I noticed this book has some very outdated ideas and just wanted to flag it to you so you can ‘retire’ it.”

I'm sorry for the mix up, I definitely think it's outrageous. But a little howl did escape 🙈 'sexy' was not what I was expecting to see

@Abraxan

It says 2.8 on it which is my daughter's level. She reads it confidently

Although she can read a book, it doesn't mean they are all aimed at that age range, though.

This is a series aimed at older children who read at this level. This may be that they find learning to read more difficult, or it's taking longer, they are new to English and a whole raft of other reasons.

There are a number of series of books with the same age.
Books at that reading level previously didn't have any appeal to older children. The idea of these types of schemes is to have story lines that might be more appealing for them.

I've seen similar threads with these schemes before, where they've ended up in lower primary classes instead of being in y5/6/7 classes. Some may be too scary, too dark, have more about relationships, etc in them so aren't always suitable for the younger children, even though they can read the words.

This isn’t appropriate in primary. Not because of the word “sexy” but because it’s propagating sexist ideas and they won’t have the critical thinking skills to challenge that.
Lipsandlashes · 14/02/2022 14:39

Sexy!?! That is absolutely inappropriate for a primary reading book. How the hell would you even begin to explain when the inevitable question of what that means, comes.

TheOccupier · 14/02/2022 14:44

What a shame that the book was left on the bus/fell into the bathtub....

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 14/02/2022 18:30

Well quite! Completely agree with you in this case. Grin No one is missing out if this ends up at the back of the store cupboard.

My mind's gone blank for examples but I meant really good, engaging stories that Y6 parents complain about because there's one instance of 'shit' on page 13
