Parent .5 mile, sisters, are in the next street,

ExhaustedMumma · 12/02/2022 21:18

Mum, Dad, Sister all 100 miles away (but within a mile each other). Brother 100 miles away in the opposite direction.

MIL and BIL about 1.5 miles away. FIL 15 miles away.

SIL 120 miles away.

I find it quite hard to be so far away as I had a huge family that all lived within a few minutes of each other. I saw my grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins most days. I’m sad for my kids that they don’t have this closeness.

devildeepbluesea · 12/02/2022 21:21

Dad - about 300 yards
Sister / BIL / Nephew - 2.5 miles
ExDH (still a good friend and part of family) - 5 miles
Wider family - all within a 3 mile radius.

I have been further away but came
Home 2 years ago. Great decision.

Letsleepingcats · 12/02/2022 21:24

Yes middle class and everyone lives a good hour from each other, sad in a way.

Scarby9 · 12/02/2022 21:27

booplefloof · 12/02/2022 21:27

DM is dead.
DF 3000 miles
No siblings

linmanuel · 12/02/2022 21:46

@ooherrmissus14

We live 170 miles away from both sides of the family (my parents and in-laws). It's been so hard bringing up children away from them and I wouldn't recommend it but now our children have roots where we are it would be really difficult to move back x
This is how I feel
TheCanyon · 12/02/2022 21:54

Parents and youngest db 75ish miles, bout 3 hours away driving or for us 1 hour bus and either a 3hr bus or two buses taking 4 hours.

Older db 395miles. 1 hour bus. Edi-lon train 4 1/2 hour and tube however long.

Fil 135 miles which translates to 1 hour bus, 1 hour train, 1 hour train, 30 min ferry, 1 hour bus.

Both dhs siblings live in the middle east, so depending Qatar/Dubai, roughly 8/9 hours

elQuintoConyo · 12/02/2022 22:04

Barcelona, Nottingham, Brighton, Sydney.

As soon as I left university I moved to Italy. DB moved to Sydney about 3 years later.

Heartofglass12345 · 12/02/2022 22:36

See I find it weird that people would move hundreds of miles away from their families unless they didn't like them. My sisters are the people I'm closest to, I moved 40 minutes away from my family but most of the rest of them still live in the town we grew up in or nearby. I don't know many people that don't live near their families, unless they don't like them lol.

But then again I'm not middle class Grin

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 12/02/2022 22:44

I find it weird to live so close to family but maybe if you live somewhere there are lots of jobs, opportunities etc it's relatively easy to stay where you are. I studied 250 miles away, then worked 12000 miles away to build up the experience that allowed me to move back to the UK and there's only 2-3 places where my kind of job would be easy to find in the UK. Factor in DH's job as well and there's no way we could live closer to family unless they all moved.

I was moved as a child with only my parents and siblings, two of us moved back 10000 miles to be near other family, therefore 10000 miles away from my parents and other sibling.

Parents are middle class, I'm not.

Fredstheteds · 13/02/2022 07:32

Parents - 1 minute
Inlaws-30 mind
SIL-10 mins

We moved for work. That's not unusual.

My parents and brother: 180 miles.

Parents in law: 400 miles.

SquigglePigs · 13/02/2022 07:39

My parents are about 70 miles away. PIL about 120 and SIL about 170.

DH and I meet at university and we've stayed in/around that city.

FrenchFancie · 13/02/2022 07:40

As the crow flies about 2100 miles from everyone else, about to get better and be about 400 miles and in both the same country and time zone which will be a huge improvement

EileenGC · 13/02/2022 07:40

Parents and siblings - 1300 miles (3h plane ride)
Rest of siblings - 700 miles (2h plane ride)
Grandparent - 1000 miles - but opposite direction to parents, so it’s more like 2500 miles between them
Group of aunts and uncles who are practically like second parents to me - 700 miles, but in opposite direction to siblings

We’re definitely not middle class. Bottom of the working class category if we’re being very honest. I’m the first in my family to have gone to university. There is a mix of economic migration and a love for different countries and cultures that has caused us all to live scattered around the world.
