Anyone else developed poseable hair in their 40s? I look like a troll doll :-/

I used to have lovely soft, mobile hair, although it always tangled easily. Now I wake up in the morning and it's literally starburst out from my head like Doc from bloody Back to the Future! It's worse at the front where it's starting to go grey and coarser. This morning there was a shock of hair standing completely upright from my forehead Sad

Is there anything that can be done to restore the texture? Is this it now? It's thinning as well, quite noticeably in places.

No advice but I'm the same.
Never had great hair, but now it's an awful fuzz. Never ever looks tidy. Sad

Rummikub · 11/02/2022 14:39

Me too
I tie my hair back now all the time. If I use product to tame it then it just looks greasy too!

ClaudiusTheGod · 11/02/2022 14:40

Same here. No one ever has answers either. Conditioners just sit on my hair and then slide off.

This can be really linked to menopause. My only advice would be that you need to use really good hair products, the kind you buy from the hairdresser, and while you're there get some advice on the best hairstyle, routine etc.

Dyrene · 11/02/2022 14:41

Mine has gone weirdly curly and fizzy. It’s so annoying.

sadpapercourtesan · 11/02/2022 14:42

Yeah, conditioners used to do wonderful things to my hair. Now they either do nothing whatsoever, or they make me look like I've been doused in chip fat.

It doesn't "fall" properly any more either. It seems determined to pick the most awkward, least logical way to hang. I find myself scraping it back all the time, which I doubt is helping with the thinning issue

I think this is why my mum and grandmothers got their hair washed and set every week. My mil as well. You get it done on Friday so it’s fresh for church! 😆 I’m in my early 50s and it’s a struggle to keep looking nice.

Dyrene · 11/02/2022 14:44

The 8 second wonder water stuff from the elvive range is actually good at making your hair soft IME.

Gatekeeper · 11/02/2022 14:44

I was just going to post something similar. Mine has gone like dolls hair thats been washed 100s of times in soap.

Gatekeeper · 11/02/2022 14:45

58 so it's only going to get worse. Bums....

DameCelia · 11/02/2022 14:47

Regaine to tackle the thinning.
ActiveIron supplements to help with thinning.
Curly girl friendly products so no sulphates and no silicones.
A really good haircut.
Re-think styling products.
Got me back from shockingly coarse and thin and frizzy to vaguely acceptable.
Oh and HRT.

Kerastase OP. Shamp and cond.

It's £££, (17 quid per bottle) but when i stop using it (which i do every couple of years with the hump about the price) my hair descends into split end, wiry hell.

A bottle lasts me just under 3 months. I wash my hair every other day. You need a teeny weeny bit. You have to experiment with how little you actually need! It smells DIVINE and my hair is back to floppy softness within 2 weeks. Long bleached/coloured.

I've tried replacing it with the most expensive that the high st has to offer and it's just not as good.

I get mine on Amazon. Search about and get the best deal. Loads of different ones for different hair types.

I also use one of their hair oils now as well. It also smells divine :)

Laiste · 11/02/2022 14:51

Oh and take loads of vitamins.

Emanchego · 11/02/2022 14:53

I have the exact same issue, 42. My hair is also thinning and breaking off.

Laiste · 11/02/2022 14:58

I don't know if anything will stop/reverse the thinning. I looked at those caffeine shampoos which are supposed to boost hair growth. But when you look carefully at the reviews on sites like amazon it doesn't seem that good (even when you look at the before and after pics of people saying it does work!). And what condition is your hair going to be in using it?

Personally i feel better off getting what you still have in really good condition rather than spending out trying to grown new hair.

sadpapercourtesan · 11/02/2022 15:41

I can't afford £££ hair treatments unfortunately. I don't even go to a hairdresser regularly, DH cuts it for me. Never used to be a problem when it didn't have the texture of uncarded sheep's wool Sad

Something you could try which is really cheap (fiver for a biiiig jar) is pure virgin coconut oil.

They sell it in B&Ms and tesco ect. Near the olive oil.

I used to use Philip Kingsley elasterciser (sp?) and i tried Olaplex - the coconut oil was just as good as both of these.

You rub it into dry hair and leave it as long as poss. Cling wrap round your head and a towel. Hour + if poss, sleep in it even better.

It does wonders.

(just watch though - if it gets v warm it turns quite runny instead of solid and it's easy to not realise when you open the jar and throw it all over your carpet Hmm)

Laiste · 11/02/2022 15:46

Just to add - 2 gentle shampoos to get it out and minimal cond.

Chewbecca · 11/02/2022 15:50

HRT has really helped my hair which had dried right out and stopped, well, swinging. It’s back to normal now!

TheYellowOne · 11/02/2022 15:54

I had lovely, thick, shiny hair until a few years ago. I'm now perimenopausal and it looks and feels like candy floss

Somebodylikeyew · 11/02/2022 16:00

8 second wonder water is spectacular stuff.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 11/02/2022 16:04

Embrace it and buy a skateboard??

BOOTS52 · 11/02/2022 16:20

It is all to do with hormones, am 52 and am starting hrt this month, estrogen gel daily and tabs 14 days of month so hope it goes well as anxious. Used to have lovely shiny silky hair and now after I wash it the frizz is unreal, if I use a product on it as others have said it looks greasy. I usually wear a hat when go out. I started taking Iron again as get iron deficient anaemia and take iron few months of every year. It does help the hair and nails which are brittle. Take vit D also. Sucks in peri meno as energy is deflated and insomnia. Has anyone tried that blow drying treatment thing that uses products and stops the frizz for a few months. After you wash your hair do a cold rinse as helps the frizz a bit and good for scalp also.

You can often get the 8 second wonder water for £5. Full price is £8. It is very good.
Rummikub · 11/02/2022 16:32

How do you use that 8 second wonder?
