Anyone else developed poseable hair in their 40s? I look like a troll doll :-/

I used to have lovely soft, mobile hair, although it always tangled easily. Now I wake up in the morning and it's literally starburst out from my head like Doc from bloody Back to the Future! It's worse at the front where it's starting to go grey and coarser. This morning there was a shock of hair standing completely upright from my forehead Sad

Is there anything that can be done to restore the texture? Is this it now? It's thinning as well, quite noticeably in places.

Oh forgot to mention that my 21 yr old son told me my hair looked like Ozzie Ozbourne few weeks ago as it was all over the place ha!!!!

BOOTS52 · 11/02/2022 16:43

I rarely go either as so expensive here. I used to go to the school of hairdressing but they closed as used to get great hair cuts so cheap. Got it cut few weeks ago as it was soo long and driving me mad having to tie it back as hurts my head. I remember going out in the late 80's and sleaking my hair back with brill cream or in the mid 80's that messy hair was great used to put so much mousse in hair and dry it upside down to make it big and wild. Your fella sounds so sweet cutting your hair.

Philip Kingsley elasticizer and if there are no offers on it or small tubs available, then Body Shop Ginger conditioner (but not their ginger shampoo because it does have a mild sulfate in it).
Like PPs, I also take a multi-vitamin.

Redken Anti Snap is amazing stuff - a big dollop, a blast with the hairdryerr until it’s virtually dry and then the Babyliss Big Hair which is the best invention known to personkind (apart from fire, the wheel, anaesthesia, antibiotics and pain relief obvs).

@Rummikub

How do you use that 8 second wonder?
You just stick it on your hair for 8 seconds and then rinse it out - all as part of your shower. It makes it so much softer and silkier.
Rummikub · 11/02/2022 16:57

Oh that sounds simple!

Dyrene · 11/02/2022 17:10

Yes. It’s cheaper in the supermarket than that. £8 in sainsburys. And sometimes on offer at £5.

I am properly crap at hair and beauty stuff and I can manage to use this. You squirt it straight on to your hair and then work it in a bit.

I'm sorry OP your title made me laugh because I've developed a big round belly too 🤦🏾‍♀️

I have that too! And my skin has got coarser and swarthier.

I'm going to try the 8 seccond wonder water. It would be so nice not to feel revolting for a change!

I'm in my 50s and my hair is unmanageable now. Thinner than it was, but luckily still quite thick. The only thing I've found that makes a difference is the Elvive 8 second water. Magical stuff.

FlibbertyGiblets · 11/02/2022 17:32

The 8 second wonder water, it is surprisingly water-y, so tip it cautiously the first few times, I tip it carefully into my palm then carefully quick quick onto my head.

And do get a decent cut, unless your husband is Daniel Galvin he won't be doing you any favours with his shears.

Gardenerboo · 11/02/2022 17:34

But what hair cut??? I tie mine up every day and so decided to have it cut to shoulder length in a ‘style’ it looks awful, the layers are all wrong, thin AND bulky (how!!!).

Style inspiration please. I’m desperate, actually cried over a haircut for the first time since my teens!

That's exactly what happened to me, the one time I shelled out for a professional cut. It looked OK for about 10 minutes after I left the salon, then reverted to looking like DH had cut it Grin

I totally know what you mean about thin and bulky at the same time and all the layers being wrong. It's like...it's forgotten how it's supposed to behave!

Follow Nadine Baggott and Jo Jones on Instagram. They're currently going on a hair journey to deal with thinning, crap, candy floss hair. They're throwing money at it with trichologists, blood tests etc but they're sharing their findings and recommendations.

Yeah, the wonder water is pretty good.

It's basically age related. Isn't everything!!! Greyer, coarser and therefore less silky and manageable.

scooterbear · 11/02/2022 17:56

I'm getting this too. Always had dry hair but now nothing really seems to help. In fact it's been the last straw in me biting the bullet. I'm seeing the dr next week to tell him I'm peri menopausal (I've got all the other symptoms too) and I want low dose HRT. I could just about cope with the weird periods, night sweats, brain fog and glumness but I draw the line at my bloody hair.

Gardenerboo · 11/02/2022 18:05

@sadpapercourtesan what cut do you have now?
I’m worried that I’ll have to go much shorter which I don’t want to do as at least I can tie it back when it’s long.
To top it all, it’s grey on the top so when it’s down it looks much greyer than I remember because I only ever see it tied up and brown.
I’ve aged instantly with a shit haircut and lots of grey on show.
I do like the grey but need to have a style. Which one though??

At the moment it's just about shoulder length with a couple of layers. It's lank and flat on top, thinning and greying at the front, and the bulk of it looks like an old dog's blanket Sad

Gardenerboo · 11/02/2022 18:57

@sadpapercourtesan ohh I’m sure it doesn’t look like a dog blanket but I do know what you mean, there was drizzle yesterday here and my hair definitely took on a knitted appearance.

What to do?!

BOOTS52 · 11/02/2022 22:48

You need a blunt cut no layers. I have very straight hair and never had frizz and now have frizz and always had layers. Now hair thinner is better with a blunt cut as in no layers as layers make it look worse. I buy hair colour from health shop as have dry scalp and it does not make me itchy and looks great think called Naturtint and covers all greys and for few weeks after it is shiny and nice. Everything falling apart here also. No energy either and even an effort to wash hair at times. Hope hrt helps am starting on low dose estrogen daily and progesterone for 14 days of month which is supposed to help with insomnia. So anxious started it but cannot feel any worse, have lost my mojo. Let the layers grow out, get yr fella to do the colour for you and look up blunt cut online, just same length all around, it will look thicker. Least you have your sense of humour and am sure you look fine, we are our own worst critics.

CPL593H · 11/02/2022 23:02

I've just bought some of the 8 second stuff (£4.99 on Amazon at the moment) so thanks for recommendations. I'm past menopause but in the past few months my hair seems to be having some kind of mutiny. I can't work out how it can possibly be greasy and dry simultaneously and it resembles that of the (badly neglected and unloved) dolls people insisted on buying me 50 years ago. It could their revenge I suppose Grin

Rummikub · 11/02/2022 23:22

I d got the 8 second wonder in my basket
Reading the reviews sounds good
But do you have to blow dry hair for it to work? I air dry.

No, don't have to blow dry it to reap the benefit.
Rummikub · 12/02/2022 10:43

Marvellous! Thank you
I’ve got half term to play with it and I’m hoping I have hair that’s a bit more normal. Swishy hair maybe too far from my grasp but I’d be happy with non frizzy hair.

AlternativelyWired · 14/02/2022 16:57

8 second wonder has done nothing for my hair today. I'm very disappointed.
