Fill me full of your favourite facts. The more obscure, the better!

My favourite all time fact is that two halves of a supermarket sandwich are never from the same sandwich and are each another half of another pair. Unbelievable.

I met a grown man who didn't know peanuts grew underground recently too, which pleased me.

Enlighten me further!

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll swooning over the memory of Roger Black my teenage crush!

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

All the men's sprint medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics were won by black athletes except one, and the winner of that, was black as well.

Eh?! How does the bit from the word 'except' change anything that wasn't already clear at the end of the word 'athletes'? Am I being dim?!

My guess would be that a medal was won by Roger Black, who was white ??

Might be wrong though 👍

feliciabirthgiver · 09/02/2022 22:31

Sorry @WeeWeeMe I meant to tag you above!

SkepticalCat · 09/02/2022 22:32

Yeah, I don't get the sprint medals one either.

Hollywood actress, Hedy Lamarr was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in the US for her part in inventing the pioneering ‘frequency hopping’ technology that would eventually form the basis for bluetooth, wifi and GPS systems.

The water on earth has been the same water that's been here since the beginning of time. I know when you think about that it's pretty obvious, but it blew my tiny mind.
@Oliack1417
"A piece of string wrapped 3 times round your head, equals your height"

Does that include wrapping it around the tip of your nose, cos'in that case I'm 8 feet tall!
And the 'Elephant Man' would be about 22 feet tall!

@Wendarl

Otters have favourite stones, that they keep in a special little ‘pouch’ under their arm
If this is true this is officially my new favourite fact.

My teen ds has now got hooked on this thread and just informed me that timewise, Cleopatra is closer to our own times than she was to the building of the Great pyramid of Giza.

Montecristocount · 09/02/2022 22:45

The fact about 10% of people that have ever lived are now alive has blown my mind as I read ages ago in a book that there are now more people alive than there ever were in human history so if everyone alive today wanted to play hamlet at the same time they couldnt because there wouldn’t be enough skulls. Clearly this was a work of fiction but I’ve believed it for years Grin

Great thread! The creature with the largest penis relative to its body size is a barnacle.

Thanks for the explanations re the medals - I think I, sort of, get it now?!

So was the fact basically that all of the men's sprint medals except one bronze or silver were won by black athletes; or did Roger Black win one of the gold medals, thus being the only non-black man to win any of the sprints, even though he was a 'Black' man (by name)?!

My head hurts!!!!

That nearly all of us can, quite easily, tell the difference between hot and cold water being poured

That Morse code was initially intended as a readable thing from paper tape but the operators noticed they could transcribe directly from the audio as the dits and dahs came through en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_code#Operator-led_change_from_graphical_to_audible_code

That the seismic velocity (rate at which a pressure wave moves through something) of Moon rock is much more similar to cheese than to rocks on Earth. Wallace and Gromit may be onto something ;) imgur.com/gallery/wNa0IWo

@MajesticallyAwkward

Sharks have been around longer than Saturn's rings. Sharks date back around 450 million years while Saturn's rings are at most 100 million years old. Sharks also predate dinosaurs and trees!
need more shark facts please
