Has anyone had a uterine ablation?

I have had enough of very heavy periods.
After years of trying various things they are still heavy.
The gynaecologist has suggested a uterine ablation. I am done with having kids and love the idea of no periods but there are some horror stories online about Post Ablation Syndrome. I stupidly joined some FB ablation groups and the stories on there are so frightening, woman left in agony for months/tears after or needing urgent hysterectomies.
My gynaecologist says it’s rare and worldwide 3 million women have had an ablation.
Has anyone had one?
What was your experience?

I had it and like you could only find horror stories online especially from women who have had a CS - I’ve had 3.
I went ahead as my life was dominated by heavy periods and had tried everything going for years. I was 43, it was a few years ago and got through with painkillers. I only took one day off work but probably should have just had a couple planned just in case. It wasn’t comfortable but not the worst either.
It has been honestly life changing and I usually never express things in those terms!

I went in to have an ablation last year, but they were unable to get a satisfactory result, so I had a resection while I was under GA. Relatively painless recovery, and I had about 4 months with no bleeding, which was absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately I started bleeding again - not as heavily as before, but for 3 to 4 weeks each time. I'm currently under a different gynae, who said she would have done something else (muttered about an electric knife?) and is currently monitoring my bleeding for a couple of months before she decides what to do next.

Sixmonthcruise · 10/02/2022 08:38

GetTheStartyParted Good luck with it, hope it goes well. I was talking to me friend yesterday, she had one 6 years ago, no period since, says it changed her life for the better.
GreenSalon Thank you, that’s good to know. It is really disconcerting when you come across the negative stories but my husband says the positives don’t go online to talk about it as they are out there getting on with their lives! I suppose he’s right, I’m just a worrier lol!
Alfr Oh that’s a shame, I hope you managed to get it sorted soon.

@Sixmonthcruise Thank you. That would be amazing. Hope you come to a decision that you're happy with. And your husband is right, people are much more likely to share negative experiences.

Catnuzzle · 10/02/2022 09:28

2 years since I had mine after 8 years of horrendously heavy periods.
Had a few weeks off work as anaesthetic knocks me for six.
No bleeding since. Absolutely life changing. Go for it!

lborgia · 10/02/2022 09:39

Like day and night. Amazing, been so easy the last 6 years. BUT. I have a friend who had it done last year, and it turned out that she had a slightly odd shaped uterus and it didn't stop the bleeding, and she had a hysterectomy a couple of weeks later.

She's all better now, and very happy.

I would always try the ablation before a full hyst.

GoldenBlue · 10/02/2022 21:47

Yes I had it under general anaesthetic. Some light bleeding for a few days and then no more bleeding - ever so far (4+ years).

I know some one else that it didn't work for, her fibroids were placed differently than mine.

But for me it was the best thing ever

BeginningBridge · 10/02/2022 21:53

I had an ablation when I was 44 under GA. I needed a transfusion immediately before the operation because I was so anaemia and had the mirena coil put in as well.

Best thing ever. I felt so much better afterwards and no more bleeding.

PegasusReturns · 10/02/2022 21:57

Had it under general anaesthetic. Best thing ever. I wish I’d done it years earlier.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/02/2022 21:57

I asked and asked about an ablation but apparently I was too young as the lining may grow back again,. I tired the mirena but still had heavy periods (enough for me to have to change my diary each month as I work in the community). Now I take the pill daily. No gap. No periods. It’s great. .

Twizbe · 10/02/2022 22:09

I've got mine in 2 weeks. Excited but nervous as well.

Sixmonthcruise · 10/02/2022 22:31

BeginningBridge I was supposed to have the ablation yesterday but they wouldn’t do it as my iron has dropped so much. So I had an iron infusion today and will have another next week. Hopefully I will get the ablation soon.
Twizbe Good luck. Let me know how it went.

I hope you get your ablation very soon ( although you will hopefully feel a bit better after the infusion).

I saw my consultant on a Thursday. She greeted me with the words " you are the lady who shouldn't still be standing". I had the transfusion the next day and the operation the following day (Saturday).

But it was 15 years ago.

Sixmonthcruise · 11/02/2022 11:30

BeginningBridge Do you know what your iron levels were?
My ferritin levels are 3, I feel quite rough today after my infusion, just hope I start to feel better soon 🤞

I remember that my haemoglobin level was 4.9 on the morning my transfusion started.
sorrysaywhatnow · 17/02/2022 19:20

Thank you for starting this thread OP. I've made an appointment with a gynae consultant and will be arranging my ablation ASAP.

NeverChange · 18/02/2022 01:56

Best think o ever did. Total game changer.

Done under general anaesthetic.
Did feel tender afterwards and a little delicate, sort of like when I had my appendix out.

Extratoebeans · 21/02/2022 18:47

@sixmonthcruise I hope the iron infusion made you feel abit more human. Did you manage to get the ablation done?

Twizbe · 24/02/2022 14:15

I've just had mine done (2 hours post surgery) and feel surprisingly well.

Let's see how I get one

GetTheStartyParted · 24/02/2022 18:22

Glad you feel OK @Twizbe Really hope you recover well and it has the desired effect!

I have to phone next week to see if my biopsy results are back or mine will be postponed Sad

Hope it doesn't get delayed. I need to go back for the biopsy results but the consultant was confident nothing will be found.

I'm feel good pain wise, just some mild cramps but very tired from the anaesthetic.

My uterus decided to have one last go and started my period early this month. I was bleeding when I went in and am now just tiny spotting.

We will see what next month brings but 🤞🏻 it works.

The consultant did say that 30% of women go on to have a hysterectomy 5 years after the ablation. Has anyone had that?

Seafog · 24/02/2022 18:47

It was life changing, been period free since 2013
Had it under GA, no issues

tootiredtobother · 24/02/2022 18:51

had it done when I was 40 im now 60, no grow back of lining, best thing i ever did,
ask and ask again dont be fobbed off

Twizbe · 27/02/2022 19:16

Now a few days post op. No pain which is great. A little bit of discharge and bleeding but not loads. It has felt a bit .... itchy sometimes but ibuprofen has helped.

Mostly I'm exhausted from the anaesthetic but hopefully that will pass soon.

One thing they didn't tell me about though was the bloat! Not sure if it's because I'm a bit constipated or whether it's because uterus is swollen a bit 🤷🏼‍♀️ anyway I look about 5 months pregnant which is a bit funny really.

Baggy trousers and jumpers for me at the moment lol.

longlivetheking · 27/02/2022 19:43

Rest up @twizbe
