Food ideas for no fridge, only hot water

BlabBlub · 08/02/2022 07:15

I'm having a c section Monday, luckily I will have my own room and DH can stay with me. Unfortunately if he leaves the room he can't come back.

Obviously I'm fine as I'll be given food but I'm looking for ideas for DH that don't need a fridge/cooking. We can have hot water and a cool bag though.

I'm thinking pot noddles ect but anyone have any slightly better ideas? Thanks!

Why doesn't he come up with his own ideas? Confused

Riverlee · 08/02/2022 07:16

Porridge pots
Cup of soup

daisypond · 08/02/2022 07:21

How long are you going to be in for ? Is he staying the whole time? Sandwiches? Fruit?

Pots of salad, falafel, hummus for the cool bag. Prepacked sarnies. Cup a soup / mugshot for something warm. Fruit and biscuits.

tackling · 08/02/2022 07:21

Can't he just make himself a packed lunch and a big bundle of snacks?

Didicat · 08/02/2022 07:23

Flavoured cous cous packets? Flapjacks, but likely prepackaged food. How long do you think you will be in

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/02/2022 08:52

Sandwiches
You are likely only to be in for a day or two.
Leave it to him.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 08/02/2022 08:55

Pre -cooked tuna mayo pasta, sandwiches, crackers and cheese, crisps...anything you would take on a picnic will work won't it? Cereal if you put some milk in a thermos?

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 09:11

I'd just watch and wait and see how long it took him to work out how to get his own food when it doesn't magically appear in front of him because the food fairy was too busy having major surgery to remove another human from her body Smile.

Exactly what Barbara said. Will he expect you to sort out feeding him, watering him and wiping his arse when you’re lying in bed feeding and bonding with your baby? Perhaps he could breast feed..? Now would be a REALLY good time for him to pull his big boy pants up.
Sotree · 08/02/2022 09:38

You are having major surgery and you have to think about food for your husband? What plans have he made you feed you whilst you recover?

welshladywhois40 · 08/02/2022 09:47

I would take pasta salad, sandwiches, snack bars, cartons of Juice - for you and give your husband the hospital food.

I found most hospital food just awful so lived on cold food brought in my hubby.

If all is ok - hopefully you will be out quickly. We managed 30 hours post emcs during Jan 2021

ivykaty44 · 08/02/2022 09:56

ive just spent 2 days on delivery ward after emergency surgery with dd and it was fine to leave the room to get something to eat - they didn't hold me prisoner. as long as you're not taking the piss. I had someone from home bring food for both of us - hot food and it was fine to go and collect. tbh I only the the room twice in two days. the staff make toast for each mum when they delivered and they Kindly brought me some toast in the morning as well as dd

Tell him to sort out some food for himself

minipie · 08/02/2022 10:11

Most large hospitals have a cafe and/or a shop where you can buy sandwiches, baked potatoes etc.

Clymene · 08/02/2022 10:23

If you're going to have an elective caesarean you may be bumped while they do emergencies so I'd make sure there's food for you. If you get pushed back to the end of the day, you won't be back in your room until well after dinner

BlabBlub · 08/02/2022 11:42

I'm sorry that I seem to have offended so many people with this question. Of course he will be sorting his own food out but we were discussing it last night (I was deciding what nice snacks I was going to take for myself) and I said I'd post here for some ideas in case we hadn't thought of something obvious.

The cafe is only open to staff and it really is the case that if you leave the ward you can't come back. They are very strict on this.

tuna mayo cans, cherry toms, and crackers or oatcakes. porridge pots. A loaf of bread should last your stay. Processed cheese should be fine in a cool bag. Wraps keep well. Cup a soup.

The Free From section can be quite useful for long life stuff. For example Alpro do some caramel dessert pots that look like yoghurts but don't need to go in the fridge. But apples or bananas are probably easier. Also he might like to pack his own meds especially painkillers.

Good luck with it all.

chesirecat99 · 08/02/2022 13:03

I'm with welshladywhois40, give him the horrible hospital food and take lovely things for yourself Grin

You could take pretty much any picnic food (quiche, cold meats, hummus, pasta or potato salad, eggs, sandwiches etc) for the first day as it will be fine in the cool bag.

Things that don't need refrigerating that will be safe (and nice) if they go above 5C:

Breakfast ideas:
Porridge pots
Cereal with UHT milk
Croissants, pain au chocolat
Fresh fruit
Freeze yoghurt, milk fruit or fruit juice in pots - they will help keep the cool bag cold and be ready to eat/drink the next day

Lunch and dinner:
Pot noodles with extras eg chilli, spring onion
Tuna and bean salad from tins or those long life mixed tuna fillings for sandwiches)
Cup a soups with really nice bread eg cheese rolls, olive focaccia etc
Take a small knife and mini chopping board to make salads from vegetables that will keep well out of a fridge if they are whole eg carrots, avocado, celery, tomatoes, cauliflower florets, little gem lettuce (ideally, stand them in a few cm of water in a glass), tinned potato salad, saucisson sec or pepperami, tinned tuna or salmon (if you are okay with the smell), cheeses that don't need to be kept cold (eg mature waxed cheddar, babybels, parmesan, pecorino romano), croutons, nuts, salad dressing that doesn't need to go in the fridge.

Seriously wtf is wrong with people?! Going on and on that he should be sorting his own food. The poor woman just asked for suggestions for goodness sake.

PeacheyPeach · 08/02/2022 13:49

How about Sandwiches,.pasta salads the pre packaged ones, anything off the deli counter like mini porkpies etc. Hummus Cucumber and carrot sticks
, fruit, pack of chocolate, crisps
Ooo I'm getting hungry myself!!

Just what I thought!

OP whenever I stay in a hotel and have no cooking facilities I eat pot noodles with bread, pasta n sauce, ready made salad etc

Doublechins · 08/02/2022 14:05

OP the hospital I work at doesn't leg fathers leave the ward so because of this they get meals provided as well

Thewindwhispers · 08/02/2022 14:08

You can buy surplus army ration packs on the internet. It’s all boil in the bag but some of it is pretty good, and more importantly it’s high energy ‘man food’ lamb stew with dumplings, toffee pudding etc.

(Don’t bother apologising to the trolls, there’s a lotta bored angry people around at the moment. On the bright side at least they’re at home being rude to strangers on the internet, instead of chasing politicians around Parliament Square 🙄)

yorkshireteaspoonie · 08/02/2022 14:11

Wow that's a lot of man bashing.. she only asked a question I thought we were moving into LTB territory for a moment there 🙄

crosstalk · 08/02/2022 14:49

OP. So this is for you and DH when he stays with you during and after C section?

Depends on what you like.

I'd certainly go for instant porridge/honey/uht milk/tea. Mini tomatoes/sliced bread/ham/hard boiled eggs? for lunch. Fruit. Any of the pot noodles but would take soy to rev them up. As a PP has said some of the Free From have instant meals. You can adapt along with what meals the hospital unit supplies.

Good luck!
