help - earring holes closed on DD

ChiselandBits · 07/02/2022 18:46

DD took them out after a couple of days short of 6 weeks. They've closed up overnight, from the back. Is there anything else we can do except go back and get them repierced? Much sadness in the house tonight Sad

Gah. My DD had this too. Got them re-pierced (it was just one that closed up overnight) but they failed to heal properly and in the end she's just taken them both out and given up on it.

SassenachWitch · 07/02/2022 18:49

Push the earrings through, they won’t have closed fully, it’s probably just a bit of gunk in there.

Depends on age I guess, this happened to DD last week, she’s 14, we just pushed them through.

DramaAlpaca · 07/02/2022 18:50

Try putting vaseline (or similar) on the posts and very, very gently wiggling them through the holes from the front. It might just be enough to open them up again.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/02/2022 18:52

Push the earring back through. They won't be fully closed at six weeks.

It will sting, though.

SheWoreYellow · 07/02/2022 18:52

I’d try and reopen them I think rather than leaving them any longer. Or go back to the piercing place (ideally a tattoo/piercing place).
But if you manage to get them open again she needs to keep earrings in them or they will close up to begin with.

ChiselandBits · 07/02/2022 18:59

thanks. She's Y6 and easily discouraged. She was so happy that they were done and really upset now. I don't want her to just give up on it.

How long were they out of her ear for? I’m trying to guauge how closed up they are.

PyjamaMamma · 07/02/2022 19:08

DD lost one of hers the other day and it was off for at least 12 hours by the time we noticed - I messaged the piercer who did it to ask for advice on what to do and he asked me to go back and he would put it back on/re-pierce. So if you can, I’d message the place where she had it pierced to ask for advice.

They were out for about 24 hours. We had it done at Superdrug - really nice knowledgeable piercer so we'll pop back there tomorrow.

Oh no, how did that happen? Maybe do go back then rather than doing it yourself.
dicdicnurse · 07/02/2022 19:29

This happened to DD2. One fell out during school and the teacher popped it in a little envelope and sent it home. Unfortunately it was too late and we couldn't get it back in. In the end she took the other one out too.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 07/02/2022 19:37

You need to keep them in constantly for the first 6 months at least, if not a year or more. The six weeks is when you can change them although I personally think that’s a bit soon anyway. If she is going to put them back in she needs to understand she can’t leave them out for any period of time for a while yet.

MazzleDazzle · 07/02/2022 19:40

Of you need to get them done again I’d advise going to a proper piercer (most usually found in tattoo or piercing studios) not someone with a piercing gun.

Pyriah · 07/02/2022 19:42

Can holes close up years after being pierced? I had mine done over a decade ago, one day I just couldn’t get an earring in and I daren’t push.

Mine close over a bit if I leave my earrings out for more than a few days. I tend to just push through gently - it doesn’t really hurt (sometimes a little pinchy, but mainly just a sensation of being aware but it not hurting). I sort of push the earring and then rub the taut skin at the back until it kinds of pops.
EduCated · 07/02/2022 19:51

Meant to add, that’s about 15+ years in!

MrsGHarrison87 · 07/02/2022 19:59

I've had mine done since I was a kid but I rarely wear earrings. I tried to get some in the other day and one wouldn't go through. I just kept twisting the earring in the hole and it went through.

TheBodyPiercer · 07/02/2022 20:00

The "piercers" at superdrug will not have the equipment to put these back in and they definitely shouldn't be repierced yet.

Visit a reputable piercer (preferably a UKAPP member piercer, they have a member locator on their website) and they should be able to taper them back in for you.

A reputable piercer won't insert butterfly backed or outside jewellery so be prepared to buy new jewellery.

Lobe piercings take anywhere between 3 and 6 months to fully heal, never 6 weeks & can close very quickly.

Matilda1981 · 07/02/2022 20:01

I don’t wear earrings for months on end and then decide to wear a pair - always have to push through the back!! Doesn’t actually hurt!

caulkheaded · 07/02/2022 20:01

Also in the “push them back in” brigade. Mine often close up again, and the same with my nose but it never fully heals IME

They can yes, any piercing can heal up without jewellery in. However a reputable piercer may be able to taper them open for you rather than needing to pierce again depending on how healed they are.
Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 07/02/2022 20:05

Did had hers done last summer. Pretty much daily I'd have to push them back through for the next few months as she can't wear them in school. I find if you pull the love down a touch as you wiggle the earing through its easy.

Yours are fully healed, these are still a healing wound. The fistula won't have fully fitted enough yet and can often cause lots of damage by just pushing them back in.
ChiselandBits · 08/02/2022 06:57

thanks all - lots to think about. Really appreciate the advice re the qualified piercer thing.

Leave them until the start of the summer holidays. She should be removing them for PE at school !
