Grocery shopping delivery or not?

MsMiaWallace · 05/02/2022 22:04

Do you get your groceries delivered? If not why not?
Do you actually enjoy going into the supermarket to do it?
Who do you use or where do you go?

I usually get mine delivered as I feel life's too short to stress in the shop in one of my few days off from work. Plus the stress of the tills, packing & unpacking does my head in!

Click and collect is the best! Much prefer it to getting a delivery and supermarkets stress me out if I need to do a big shop. Tesco & Sainsbury's in my experience are better than others and both apps are easy to use.. Asda is awful and I used to get loads of substitutions and weird ones too Grin also got a delivery from them once and they forgot to give me half the order.

I would agree about the whole choosing your own fruit and veg thing but I've never had a problem with anything chosen for me when shopping online.. never even noticed the difference from what I'd pick up myself in the supermarket.

pupcakes · 05/02/2022 22:52

@PuppyMonkey

The stress of actually doing an online shop and waiting for a delivery is also not nice.

I quite like going to a supermarket I know well and getting exactly what I want and then going home with everything I want. I can do a big Aldi shop in 30 mins.

This really made me laugh Grin so Mumsnet!!

What on earth is not nice about playing on a website and sitting in your own house?!

purpledagger · 05/02/2022 22:53

We've never done an online grocery shop in this house, but I do shop for other items online. I do quite like getting out to the shops but there are times when it isn't convenient/can't be bothered. I just don't think I'm organised enough for an online shop eg working around delivery slots. We also shop in Lidl and they don't deliver.

My sister does the occasional Iceland delivery which is next day and I quite like the idea of that for a quick top up.

Sablemablelable · 05/02/2022 22:55

@Ilikewinter

I like to pick my own fruit and veg, also if I shop online I buy the same things every week, by going in store I get inspired to try different things. I always do scan and pack so no loading/unloading of the trolley, its sooo much quicker.
This is pretty much me!

I like to go to the supermarket in the evenings as well. Its quieter and not full of families that think the supermarket is a nice family day out. Hmm

User0458832 · 05/02/2022 22:57

Online is very handy for the cans, cereal, milk, cleaning stuff that you have to get regularly anyway and is a bit of a chore, some things are really heavy to hump in and out of the trolley and car rather than being brought to the doorstep, roll on when they can bring it into the kitchen again

ihaveonecat · 05/02/2022 23:09

Used to go myself but back to deliveries now because of the relaxation of masks etc
Subs are a pain sometimes but I find it ok

Boobahs · 05/02/2022 23:28

I actually quite like doing the food shop, it's the "putting it all away" part I detest!
I do Aldi/Lidl so no option of online anyway.

I did try Morrisons deliveries for a couple of months a couple of years ago when I had DS2 and was home alone with both kids but I just found it so much more expensive (although better for sticking to a set budget).

I also tried a click and collect from Aldi last year when we all got covid and my dad went to collect it for us. There was a massive cock up on their end and I didn't even get my click and collect fee back, which I'm still pissed off about now Angry

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/02/2022 23:29

We get deliveries and have done for years. I don't remember the last time I did a full food shop in a supermarket Confused

I find them busy, noisy and overwhelming for the most part.

HeddaGarbled · 05/02/2022 23:40

I do both: delivery for the stuff I get regularly; pop into shops so I can pick my own of the things I’m picky about, browse for spontaneous treats, pick up things I’ve forgotten to order or run out of.

cheekychaplin · 05/02/2022 23:57

I find it really hard to do online shopping. I wish I was able to explain it for the posters upthread who don't realise we are not all the same. I have problems with processing information (im autistic) and physically being in the shop makes it easier. I can do online but I don't like it. Seeing the items in person rather than on a screen makes a difference. Knowing the bananas are that in the aisle after the jelly makes a difference. Being able to look for ideas of what to eat with what makes a difference. It's just easier for me.

myyellowcar · 06/02/2022 00:08

We regularly do online shops now (switched during covid) and it’s massively convenient to eliminate a weekly task.

However I do find it more expensive and often stuff isn’t available and you end up going into a shop anyway. And also things being sent short dated. Yes you get a refund but then you are down a meal. And have to go to the shop.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/02/2022 00:16

I absolutely love it that you can get shopping delivered.

I hate actual supermarkets*, and get weirdly dazed in them, think it’s the lighting.

*Apart from Waitrose where I just spend £££

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/02/2022 00:25

We don’t have a car so have always done online shopping. We do two online shops a month and pick up bits and fresh veg in between. I have everything we regularly buy as favourites so it is very quick and easy, and I tend to have a rough meal plan so we know non-standard stuff we need.

In the first lockdown it was a real pain not being able to get delivery slots, especially for bulky things like pet food.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 06/02/2022 00:26

I like doing my shopping in a supermarket. I rarely order it online and when I do, it feels like a lazy option for me. There is always, bizarrely, a slight thrill in asking for something at a counter, although my inner child has to be restrained from requesting a quarter pound of cheese. And now I type this, I realise I actually replicate my shopping with my mum and how much I enjoyed that.

PuppyMonkey · 06/02/2022 08:31

Okay maybe it’s just me that gets stressed doing it online.Grin

I find I sit there and can’t remember a single thing I want. At least in an actual shop you see the goods and can make a decision on if you want an item. Yea I know online shops will remember your previous orders but surely you don’t get the same things every single week?

Ragwort · 06/02/2022 08:39

Imsitting - your comment made me smile, I am over 60 and my DM is nearly 90 (in very good health) we love going shopping together Grin, a favourite day out for her is checking out the local supermarkets !

I just make a shopping list the same as I would if I was going to the supermarket. You can also see the goods online and make a decision whether you want them.
Hugasauras · 06/02/2022 10:39

Shopped online for years and years and will never go back to doing it in store.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/02/2022 10:47

Shopped online now for over 20 years. Mostly Ocado. I do get mostly the same things week after week, so creating the order is easy, as they have a suggested shop for me and it's a matter of seconds to go through that and delete the things we don't need that week, alter quantities of some other things, and then it reminds me that I haven't got this, that or the other thing that I buy often, and most weeks I add at least one of those. Then they point out special offers and I often succumb to one or more of those, and finally they tempt me with flash sales, and more often than not I get one of those as well.

Five minutes to do the initial order. A few minutes here and there over the succeeding days adding and removing things as they occur to me. Job done, easy.

I'd quite like to go to Aldi or Lidl instead, but we don't have one on a direct bus route from home, and as I don't drive I'd end up having to get a cab home, so all the price savings would be wiped out.

I do top up at Sainsbury's sometimes. Don't mind a short trip to get a few specific items. Find it boring and tiring to do a full shop in person these days.

LittleBearPad · 06/02/2022 11:00

Ocado automatically books me a slot every Saturday morning and does an order for me. I then edit it depending on what we actually want.

It’s much less hassle than having to go to a shop every week.

doggydaft · 06/02/2022 11:06

I actually enjoy food shopping in person but due to time constraints I generally get a tesco delivery at least once a week.
I've been doing it regularly for 20 years and have it down to about 10-15 minutes.
I find the tesco website the easiest by far to navigate and the substitutions the most sensible.
I do have ocado envy though. Would like to try it but it's unfortunately not available where I am.

FoamBurst · 06/02/2022 11:10

I like to go.
Many reasons :
Half my groceries are from aldi.
I have to get free from for the dc and often have to go to various supermarkets to get certain products he will eat. Or to find in stock items.
Although I write a list there's always things when I'm there that I remember i need.

On the odd occasion I get a delivery, there's often fatty meat I wouldn't choose.
Veg that doesn't always look great.

Not going to pay for it to be delivered when the shop is a 3 min drive

Whichcatthatcat · 06/02/2022 11:11

I hate food shopping, but it's too expensive for me to do it on line.

Until lidl start delivering, I'll just have to go in person. I just can't justify the price difference in other shops. (I think its the huge choice and range that puts the price up, not the individual products)

Chocomelon · 06/02/2022 11:15

I like an online shop as it's convenient but I do also like going into a shop. I do my main shop online and find it helps to know how much I'm spending and I have a bit more control than I get I just pick up everything with no self control

Nutrigrainygoodness · 06/02/2022 11:23

I've done online shopping on and off for years.
Pre covid I would do an online shop maybe once a fortnight, and physically go to asda the other week.
Then when covid hit, I stopped getting deliveries and went to click and collect (1. For other people who couldn't get to a shop could get a space and 2. For the drive out once a week)
Now I get a delivery once a week, very rarely go to the shop now. The only annoying thing is when I go to amend my order and they tell me things are out of stick 6 days I advance and won't let me re add them at all during the week.
Yesterday I got my asda shop, 2 things were out of stock, I ended up in asda and these things were on the shelf.
But overall its so much easier to do it online.
