Does anyone know how exactly this chant originated, and what it now means, if anything?

I heard it being used in the pub by rugby fans today, but I know it's usage is/was much wider.

Oi Oi Oi!!!

There's seems to be several claims to the origin so I suspect we will never know for sure.

Puppylucky · 05/02/2022 19:37

Originated in Cornwall as a pasty seller cry - adopted by Welsh Rugby Union in the 70's, now widespread. Google is your friend!

PraiseBee · 05/02/2022 19:38

My dad says it meaning Cornish pasties

babymama471 · 05/02/2022 19:38

I've read this online but I've also read elsewhere that it's probably not true. I'm intrigued.

Cornish wives used to shout it down the mineshaft to ask if their husbands wanted their lunch. Oggy oggy oggy - do you want your lunch Dave? Oi oi oi - yes please dear

That's what I heard anyway, no idea if it's actually true. Grin

Susu49 · 05/02/2022 20:05

I like this explanation

Seems unlikely though with number I'd miners down a shaft?!

@Hm2020. As we're all adults I'm sure we can cope with a Ryder version

OldClothes · 05/02/2022 20:23

@JugglingJanuary I quite like it, I hope it happened.

We used to shout it in the car as we drove over the Tamar Bridge on the way into Cornwall when down with my family there when I was small... no idea why though 😂

PerkingFaintly · 05/02/2022 20:27

Oggy oggy oggy.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 05/02/2022 20:39

Also, miners have to leave behind the pasty's crust for the knockers or they will steal their tools or put out their candles.

WhereIsMyGlasses · 05/02/2022 20:42

It's Hoggy Hoggy Hoggy after Stuart Hogg. My dad has just informed me that it converted to this, previously it was something racist. I don't know.
