Does anyone know how exactly this chant originated, and what it now means, if anything?

I heard it being used in the pub by rugby fans today, but I know it's usage is/was much wider.

I think it definitely pre-dates Black Lace. Didn't the Welsh comedian Max Boyce popularise it in the 70's?

According to Wikipedia, apparently so. I'd love to know how it began and evolved, but I guess it might be lost in the mists of time.

I only know it from the Black Lace song!

User135644 · 05/02/2022 21:25

It was started in Tesco in the 80s by a group of football drunks.

@User135644 Anecdote or sarcasm? Smile

It was the first time that I heard it. Football fans were in Tesco, supposedly they'd made up this new chant.

Yes. It was Max Boyce's catch phrase.
hillyholman · 05/02/2022 21:31

Forget Max Boyce and Black Lace, all pants. Oggy is and always has been a Cornish pasty.
Go to a Cornwall County rugby match in Redruth and stand in Hellfire Corner. You'll hear it sung in it's full glory there.

@User135644 I imagine the ordinary customers weren't impressed Smile

Most of the customers ran out the shop when the fans came in. Hooliganism was rife at the time. People were terrified of football fans. These fans were drunk but harmless though. This was the first time i'd heard that song, they were adamant they'd just started it. This would have been 1983.

OldClothes · 05/02/2022 21:40

It's before my time, but yes I can understand! Kind of amuses they'd claim a song as their own creation.

Max Boyce Live at Treorchy starts with him shouting it and that was recorded in 1974 so it predates that.

Cam2020 · 05/02/2022 21:49

I don't know, but it seriously pisses me off when I hear it! Blush

whirlycarly · 05/02/2022 22:56

You hear it a lot in Cornwall Grin

OldClothes · 05/02/2022 23:04

@whirlycarly It kind of fits with the accent Grin

It was chanted at Guide and Scout camps in the 70's and I suspect long before.
Also the county of Middle sex would be split and shouted with great joy and daring!!
