I find old abandoned places fascinating. If its safe and legal I will often stop for an explore

Anybody got anything interesting nearby? Am i alone with this love of urban exploration?

even churches and churchyards have me stopping by for a good look

Shameless placemarking here, as I am also drawn to abandoned places! I grew up in a very deprived area and was a neglected child, so my brother and I spent a lot of our time playing in derelict houses and exploring old factories and industrial dumps etc. It was magical in its own way. I don't have anything exciting very near me, but I've come across some cracking ruins in Ireland and on Dartmoor that still retain a strong sense of place.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/02/2022 20:13

I like industrial heritage. We have old lead mines in my area and we sometimes come across old entrances, chimneys, remains of buildings, railway lines and even the mine headgear.

Purpleseaside · 03/02/2022 20:23

I live near 'Baron Hill Mansion, Beaumaris.' It is extremely eerie there, with an old horse drawn carriage tipped on its side, furniture and other artefacts around. It's such a shame that it's fallen to ruin. Have a look on Google Smile.

Have a look on YouTube.
You’ll find you are very much not alone in the love for urbex!

GirlInACountrySong · 03/02/2022 20:30

ooh off to look!!

i can spend hours in churchyards, old farm buildings..even little shepherd huts .We have a few old WW2 bunkers about too

Adam Mark Explores
The Bearded Explorer.

Two good UK channels that aren’t in your face and loud, both are very respectful of any property they are exploring too.

Yes find this stuff fascinating. For some reasons it's abandoned theme parks or holiday parks that intrigue me the most....

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 03/02/2022 20:37

I follow some explorer groups on social media. I find it fascinating, especially the little houses that have all the contents. I wouldn't have the guts to do it myself!

Iamanunsafebuilding · 03/02/2022 20:38

I live in Wiltshire and there's a village called Imber which was requisitioned in WW2 and all the residents had to leave, it's never been re-occupied. It opens a couple of times a year for visitors and it's fascinating to visit! It's used for army training but the church is still consecrated.

GirlInACountrySong · 03/02/2022 20:39

Ive spent many an hour exploring theme parks via google

i love the website 28dayslater

i'll look up the youtube channels next week when i have the week off, as i always fall down rabbit holes with this stuff!

I love looking at them on YouTube but haven't been brave enough to visit any myself. I find abandoned theme parks very creepy. Have a look at the abandoned Camelot, before it was demolished. Found that one fascinating, particularly as I'd visited a few times as a child.

hivemindneeded · 03/02/2022 21:52

I love them. I used to belong to a FB group called something like Derelict Places which explored and documented abandoned buildings.

I've always loved them. As a child I used to break into them (not damage, just sneak in through a gap in the fence and an open window, and then explore. No idea why they are so appealing.

realsavagelike · 03/02/2022 21:59

I love 28dayslater too. Fascinating.

GirlInACountrySong · 04/02/2022 15:37

Just looked at derelict places on fb

Really interesting

So many country houses/manors left abandoned. Bishops Avenue in London had many! So sad

It is an interesting topic, my favourites are old asylums, hospitals, military bases, submarine pens, rocket silos and underground bunkers.

There's also different Facebook groups although usually they keep most locations secret to prevent plunder,
Hawkins001 · 04/02/2022 15:44

I do like old factories and timber mills too

Its open 20th August and you can get an Old London bus from Salisbury i think.
Thesearmsofmine · 04/02/2022 15:46

I find it really interesting to see inside old hospitals and hotels, I don’t go myself but sometimes look at Facebook pages although I was put off a bit by a thread here when one of these explorers had gone into the what was still someone’s home(I think the lady was staying with family or something) and posted photos of it.

Thesearmsofmine · 04/02/2022 15:47

Old schools are interesting too, there is one not too far of me and someone went in and there was so much equipment just left.

SJFarter · 04/02/2022 15:47

Also shamelessly placemarking. I love articles and photos of these.

GirlInACountrySong · 04/02/2022 15:58

Inner looks fascinating

There's also Tyneham. Another ghost village

I remember once seeing the abandoned Disney palace style new build houses, I think they were in Turkey? Very random and a total waste

I find abandoned places fascinating too. I try not to look online as I can lose several hours before emerging back into the real world blinking in the sunlight. At my age if I did it for real I'd probably end up being put in a care home Grin.
I did enjoy seeing the abandoned staff canteen from my Saturday job as a teenager in the 70s. Brought back so many happy memories.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/02/2022 16:03

We lived in Cyprus. That was a mixture of sadness and fascination... there's many abandoned villages etc in the red zone. The famous bits in Famagusta and Nicosia, but then just small ones you can see across rhe border.

Changedmane · 04/02/2022 16:06

We have a proper big abandoned manor house type place. The only problem is the local druggies now hang out there. So you might get a fright- but not because of ghosts!
