England town/city breaks good for kids

Unexpectedly we may be able to go away for a few nights in half term.

Where would you go? Not coastal as we've done a lot of that in the last two years and, obviously, it will be freezing.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

We've loved Exeter, Manchester, Sheffield, Norwich, Carlisle in the last few years.

Exeter is lovely. Bath is quite nice too. York is lovely, but FREEZING in winter. I'm not keen on Manchester tbh, but I do love Liverpool.

You could also do something rural but not coastal? Like the Peak District maybe or Cotswolds

We had a good trip to Manchester. Bristol and Oxford are fun. Obviously London too.

Norwich. Similar to York, but not as touristy/packed. Depending on when you're thinking of travelling the love light festival is on again this month: www.lovelightnorwich.co.uk/ for something a bit different? City centre's mostly pedestrianised and easy to get around too!

York. It’s amazing. I took dds there on my own and there was so much to do. The railway museum was fabulous. We went to the Jorvik centre which was really interesting. You have York minster, loads of afternoon tea places, museum, boats and the Shambles.

Liverpool! Amazing independent restaurants on Bold Street, all your usual high street shops in Liverpool 1, the Albert Dock with tons to look at and see, free museums such as Tate, maritime, world museum, Beatles museum (not free). Easy couple of days to enjoy there.

We’ve had a few great weekend breaks-
Birmingham -Cadbury’s World and Think Tank were great for children
Newcastle
Manchester -we stayed at a premier inn near the Trafford centre and went skiing at Chill Factore, indoor sky diving was fun too.

We've booked a couple of nights in Leeds and plan to go to The Armories, shop, go to The Everyman and swim in the hotel pool. We had loads of uk city breaks last year instead of going abroad and Glasgow was a definite favourite with the kids for the science museum.

How old are they? All the tweens (8-13)I know love Bristol - great museums, water buses, Bankys everywhere, cool playparks, good food.

When DC were younger they loved York too - Train museum, Jorvik is great, city walls are cool, loads of sweet shops down Harry Potterish cobbled streets.

I've not been to York for a while, but it's worth visiting if you haven't been. If York is your sort of place then Chester is pretty similar.
