Please tell me I'm not the only one whose hayfever has started already?

Swollen itchy eyes since yesterday. Couldn't figure out why. Then I realised it's 1st Feb today. Last year my hayfever started on 11 Feb. Argh.

At least it means Spring is on the way.

Am I the only person to get hayfever so early?

(Yes it's definitely hayfever. No it's not covid.)

I’m usually on loratadine March-July - looks like I should stock up!

MerryPoppings · 01/02/2022 22:45

Mine has got much worse in the last two years. Not sure if it's global warming or covid-related? Apparently one side effect of covid can be increased allergic reactions.

Mine started about 2 weeks ago. And I've got a stinking cold. I feel like hibernating

Yes, mine started last week - there are catkins on trees just along the road.
OH's has started today.

I'm definitely attributing mine to covid related. Before my hayfever was actually getting 'better' ie. I wouldnt even need to take tablets sometimes and itchy eyes basically stopped.

Then all a sudden its gone to the other extreme of being hyper sensitive. I hate it completely ruined my summer last yr.

Some of the symptoms we've noticed in schools recently are sneezing, blocked or runny noses and swollen eyes: the children seem to be getting these and then testing positive. Maybe try an LFT op?

MerryPoppings · 02/02/2022 15:06

Thanks, but it's not covid, it's hayfever.

Lol makes me laugh people eradicating everything under guise of covid. No more flu, colds and now there is no hayfever its all covid. Wow what a powerful virus it is Grin
Shodan · 02/02/2022 17:55

God yes me too.

I don't sneeze much, and my eyes haven't started either-but the roof of my mouth and inside my ears itch like crazy.

Thankfully I bought 2 air purifiers last year, they help a lot.

FlushTheLoo · 02/02/2022 18:55

Is it Covid OP? ....😃😂

GTAlogic · 02/02/2022 19:44

Bloody hell I was trying to be helpful and suggest that, with it being only the beginning of February and still midwinter with no sign of flowers at all where I am, it might not actually be hayfever because I do know of a lot of people who have had hayfever type symptoms and ended up being covid positive. I have not said it can't be hayfever, have I?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/02/2022 19:48

It's tree pollen for me at this time of year, nothing to do with flowers. I actually only really get from February to about May, not in the summer.

AddingMustard · 02/02/2022 19:53

Hazel and alder are showing on our pollen alert.

Lots of people who have hayfever are allergic to tree pollens, which are produced much earlier in the year.

Well you show your ignorance about hayfever then its not about flowers, its grass and tree pollen too and of course it starts earlier if winter has been mild.

Op suffers from hayfeved I think she is best person to distinguish what's hayfever or not compared to you who doesn't even know it properly. Yet you somehow think you know better Hmm

Pinchofnom · 02/02/2022 21:55

Yes me! Itchy bloody eyes.

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/02/2022 23:22

I've got a very bad cold, and hayfever, the hayfever started first. AND I do not have COVID

Luckily I also have plenty of 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

Xiaoxiong · 02/02/2022 23:28

Oh my god I've taken 2 covid tests in the last two days convinced I was coming down with covid - and completely forgetting I have horrendous hay fever and it could be that instead! Going to take an antihistamine now...

MerryPoppings · 02/02/2022 23:33

Yes I appreciate the thought @GTAlogic as some people may well dismiss covid symptoms as hayfever but I don't have covid.

Mine is tree pollen. Last year was a nightmare as I tried so many different things from the GP that didn't work but he made me try each of them for 4 weeks before he would prescribe me anything else. My eyes get so swollen even the whites of my eyes swell up amd get a layer of jelly type stuff over them, its horrible. And I instantly age about 10 years as well!

Where did I say I knew better? I made a suggestion, without rudeness or malice or any thoughts of superiority.

Doghairismyglitter · 03/02/2022 08:17

Yes! Mine started about a week ago 😩 Tree pollen for me, massively stocked up on everything, it gives me the itchiest horrible cough as well which is constant and embarrassing, like sandpaper scratching my throat, sore eyes and runny/blocked nose at the same time.

I'm incredibly lucky with my GP because she has terrible hay fever and the same triggers as me. So out of self interest she tries anything new and if it works she prescribes it for me (usually the following year). At the moment I take a prescription anti-histamine called Drynol.
Clutterbugsmum · 03/02/2022 10:22

Hay fever this time of year is tree pollen not flowers/grass.

Yes OP mine started and I will now be like this until late October/November depending on when fungi stop releasing their spores.
And unfortunately I can’t take antihistamines as I’m allergic to them too 😁

Clutterbugsmum · 03/02/2022 10:25

To add OP if your hay fever starts in February then perhaps next year try starting antihistamines in January if you take them so they can build up on your system before hay fever starts

crispinglovershighkick · 03/02/2022 11:34

Antihistamines don't build up, they will work less well as you develop a tolerance to them. Steroid sprays do become effective after a period of time (they're not effective immediately I mean) so I have started using them early in the season. It's the only thing I've tried that has completely relieved every symptom with no side effects. It's so much easier to function without the dulling effects of both allergies and antihistamines!
