expectation for guests to re-make sofa??

Went for a social gathering at an acquaintance's house (think book-club type thing), we gathered in her living room and some of us sat on the sofa. When we got up to leave, she asked if we minded re-making the sofa - so moving the cushions back to their original places and straightening the throw.

We did so as it's no big deal, but it got me thinking if this is a normal part of going to someone's house and have I missed something?!
Haven't been to the homes of others very much due to lockdowns so it really made me do a mental double take.

That is… odd.

Jumpingintomenopause · 31/01/2022 19:55

I would think her odd in all honesty.

LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 19:55

ok good to know, I got worried that I had spent my life being a really rude guest!

That’s weird. If she is that picky surely she would want it done in a certain way which you wouldn’t know?!?

StarsAreWishes · 31/01/2022 19:57

Is she not able-bodied? Maybe she wasn’t able to do it?

Pyri · 31/01/2022 19:57

So weird

Also, I’d hate to have a sofa in which the cushions have a very specific place

DillDanding · 31/01/2022 19:59

What a weirdo. She does not sound like much fun.

LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 19:59

She is able-bodied, yes. She is very active and gyms and runs.

Errrr no that is not a standard expectation for guests. Actually quite rude I think, like somehow accusing your guests of sitting untidily!

I bet she re-did it anyway as soon as you left.

LawnFever · 31/01/2022 20:02

How weird, nobody has ever asked me to do that and if they did I’d think they were odd unless they physically weren’t capable.

TheCanyon · 31/01/2022 20:02

I thought this was going to be about a sofa bed. Yes, very weird.

iklboo · 31/01/2022 20:02

Very odd unless she has a phobia about touching soft furnishings.

Moonface88 · 31/01/2022 20:03

I'm obsessive about how I like my sofa cushions but this is batshit behaviour 😂

LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 20:03

Tempted to ask my guests to wash their own things up next time I have people over Grin

3luckystars · 31/01/2022 20:04

Did she tell you to click the tips back on the pens too ‘make sure it makes a CLICK sound’! Grin

BuffaloHigh · 31/01/2022 20:04

Very odd unless they were disabled, or feeding a newborn or something.

Milomonster · 31/01/2022 20:05

Urrgghh no BUT could she be on the autistic spectrum and so not know it’s inappropriate?

SamMil · 31/01/2022 20:05

Yeah, this is odd. It would make me feel awkward about going back.

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 31/01/2022 20:05

I sometimes ask the primary-aged boys to put the cushions back on the sofa when DS has friends here. But that’s different...

mistermagpie · 31/01/2022 20:06

I also thought this was going to be a sofa bed situation! How weird, I can't imagine asking anyone to do that...

LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 20:06

No, no disability, no newborn - her children are in their late 20's, was very much a 'oh would you mind just re-making the sofa' as we got up and then she just explained how the cushions and throw should be.

OP posts:
LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 20:07

I didn't really mind as it's not a big deal to me, I just wasn't sure if this was part of going to someone else's house that I had forgotten!

Good point.

@LottieGarbo had you made them in to a fort in the middle of the room?

madisonbridges · 31/01/2022 20:11

Oooo, that has not been standard in my house but it might be in the future. 🤔 And I might just throw the hoover in there too.
Hmm, off to organise a gathering. Pledge and duster on the mantelpiece.

LottieGarbo · 31/01/2022 20:12

Grin no fort, but some sort of Stonehenge type arrangement....is that not what you do in people's houses?! It really has been a long time since I've been!
