FanGirlX · 31/01/2022 11:06

Anyone else noticed this? I'm getting about 20% less mpg.

Yep, it’s less efficient as a fuel. Double whammy with petrol prices being so high too :(

I know. It's costing me about £60 to fill up a tank. I only drive a Polo. I used to fill up once a month. Now it's every 3 weeks.

Yes,I was shocked at how quickly i was going through petrol when I switched to E10 and my car felt underpowered. I'm only using e5 now

Yep. Changing to E10 and fuel prices going up at the same time, double whammy for sure!

MasterOfOne · 31/01/2022 11:14

Yes totally agree!

vinoandbrie · 31/01/2022 11:15

E5 is even more expensive, but perhaps worth it if a tank of it lasts longer - does anyone know more about this, are there any stats out there? Petrol is costing me a fortune recently!

I'd be interested in this too.

My petrol costs have gone up from around £40 per month to around £75. I'm a low user, so those who drive more must be getting clobbered by this!

You need to calculate your MPG brim to brim over several tanks on each fuel type to get an accurate picture. Anything else is pretty meaningless.

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 11:31

WhatCar did tests back in 2014, showed a consistent drop in fuel consumption by 10% and higher CO2 emissions.

Seems pointless unless its to get us to buy a EV ?

Backed up by my DD's C1 which is using a lot more fuel too.

Apparently mixing E5 and E10 brings the economy back again but then E5 is much more expensive.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/01/2022 11:47

I've been wondering about this. I have a newer version of a car that I had a few years ago and as far as I can tell, it uses exactly the same amount of fuel, I get around 380 miles from a tank, yet I see so many people saying they get noticeably less mileage due to the switch.

Has there been any results of controlled trials published, rather than anecdotes that aren't necessarily accurate?

But even though fuel has increased recently, it's still not risen as far as the highest peak 10-20 years ago. I remember it getting to just about 150 per litre for diesel at the supermarkets, and it's not quite back up to that price yet.

But if the difference really is as bad as people are saying, then wouldn't the best thing to do be to use super unleaded type petrol because the price difference isn't as great as the claimed drop in mileage.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2022 12:03

Yes. My car is slower to accelerate as well. With the cost of petrol I can't afford to put in the posh stuff at the minute either.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2022 12:05

I can usually do 310 miles on a full tank of the old stuff. Now am only getting 280. Hyundai i10 so is really cheap to run.

Catcrazy83 · 31/01/2022 12:19

I won’t put e10 in mine, I use vpower, so around 10p a litre more. Worth it as a low user. Around a tank a month. E10 is shite for your car, hence the lower mpg and reduced performance

ginandbearit · 31/01/2022 12:45

Been running an older vw up , it began to have starting problems and felt rougher on e10 so I filled up with e5, much smoother running and no starter problems..e10 has bad reputation on fuel systems.

I've been tracking it since I first started to realise there was something up. So from 30th November last year.

But I'll try a tank or two of E5 and see if it makes a difference.

EvilPea · 31/01/2022 13:46

Super is only going to be around for a few more years.

A lot of classics are running on that currently as the e10 can melt fuel pipes and catch fire.

Hopefully there’s an additive coming that will help all these issues

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 31/01/2022 13:47

My seven year old, well maintained and serviced regularly car wouldn't even start on E10. My husband's 3 year old Ford was struggling to start as well.

We have to use E5 even though we shouldn't be using it according to the guidelines on which vehicles need it.

gogohm · 31/01/2022 13:54

Yes me too, I think I'm getting about 15% miles to the gallon on short journeys, seems not as bad on long runs

Shade17 · 31/01/2022 15:10

And what’s the difference in MPG then? Don’t forget that with colder weather comes increased fuel consumption and bear in mind that e5 super unleaded could often give a 2-3mpg improvement over e5 regular unleaded.

Catcrazy83 · 31/01/2022 20:59

I read they will reassess super unleaded in 5 years. I doubt they’ll get rid of it, to many older cars still on the road.

Shade17 · 01/02/2022 12:31

Many cars require minimum octane ratings of super unleaded so I doubt they’ll get rid, they may change it to E10 though. E25 exists as well, I wonder if that’ll find its way to the UK?

58 number plate
Which unleaded petrol is best Please?
ConfusedI don't understand!

Starlightstarbright1 · 10/02/2022 09:42

I have gone back to E5..

It probably on balance works out the same price but fill up less.

DropYourSword · 10/02/2022 09:46

Slightly different currency but I read it's only worth going for E10 if the price difference between that and Unleaded91 is 4 cents or more.
