Toddler has eaten too much sugar

DD (2.5) got into a box of chocolate I’d been given - totally my fault I was hanging some washing on the airer in the next room while she watched tv, and the chocolate was up on the bookshelf. She generally doesn’t take things off shelves so I didn’t even think (and I hadn’t eaten any of the chocolate so wouldn’t think she’d even know it was food really, we don’t eat much chocolate generally).
Anyway, she has eaten so much. Far far more sugar than I would ever give her, and far more than I’d eat in one go.
What can I expect now - I’m anticipating fairly copious vomiting pretty soon? Is that a given? If she’s ok in a couple of hours, will she probably keep it all down?

I know no one can say, and I’m just overthinking really, but I don’t really deal that well with vomit and am still suffering with some pregnancy nausea/sickness so could really do without toddler vomit setting me off as well. She had a vomiting bug earlier in my pregnancy, and a day of morning sickness plus vomiting toddler was miserable.

How many chocolates has she actually eaten? This is MN - too much could be two.

I'd expect her to maybe be a bit hyper and then sluggish, just get lots of water in her. She may not be sick if she hasn't already.

Sloughsabigplace · 30/01/2022 14:39

She will most likely be fine and won’t vomit at all.

A few times at parties my children have slipped under my radar at that age and have had SO much sugar given by well meaning friends/relatives who didn’t think what others were also giving.

Worst they have had is a bit of a sore tummy at bedtime from the amount of food.

Holdontowhat · 30/01/2022 14:39

How much chocolate are we talking? It would have to be a bucket load to make them vomit surely?! But I'm pretty laid back about chocolate so my idea of too much is probably different to yours

She'll be fine. Try not to worry.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/01/2022 14:41

I reckon she’ll be fine, we all overeat at some point, just don’t let her go on a trampoline for a while.

I suggest some sedate calm activities for the first few hours.

For what it’s worth, if she does vomit it will probably only be the once, it won’t be prolonged like an illness.

Duckyneedsaclean · 30/01/2022 14:43

She'll be fine.

Same question - how much is “too much”?
MindyStClaire · 30/01/2022 14:49

With mine my main worry would be that they'd think they could do it again Grin

hellsbells99 · 30/01/2022 14:52

You can never eat too much chocolate 😉

HomeHomeInTheRange · 30/01/2022 14:52

She’ll probably be fine.

Unless they were cherry liqueurs?

SunnyLeaf · 30/01/2022 14:53

How much?

Hellocatshome · 30/01/2022 14:53

She may be absolutely fine, she may puke she may get the runs or she may get a little hyper. I wouldn't worry though what will be will be and no lasting harm has been done. You never know it may put her off chocofor a bit. My son was sick after eating too much pepperoni pizza at a party he has never eaten it since and he's 14 now!

Mama1980 · 30/01/2022 14:54

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/01/2022 14:56

Takes a lot to make them sick and it's usually pretty immediate. Most likely you'll have a sugary hyper child for a bit then a crash and she'll be craving very savoury food. Get her something like omelette and veg for her next meal to balance out the sugar a bit.

Goldbar · 30/01/2022 15:04

She'll be fine. Give her something plain with a cup of milk for her next meal.

SickAndTiredAgain · 30/01/2022 15:08

I’m not sure exactly how many, it was a bag of loose chocolates within a box, varying sizes as they were different flavours - some fudge covered chocolate, some nougat things, some caramel etc. But I’d only eaten one and now a lot have gone. It was a handmade thing, so not even sure of weight. But no, I definitely don’t mean just 2. I don’t even know how she did it so quickly Hmm

I know I’m probably overreacting, I’m emetophobic so was getting in a flap about the thought of her projectile vomiting all over the place! I know that even if she throws up, she’ll be fine in the sense that it’s just sugar, not poison.

No, no alcohol involved.

If it is chocolate it can bung kids up sometimes, so rather than the runs watch out for constipation and tummy cramps.

Hospedia · 30/01/2022 15:16

She'll be absolutely fine, I'd be surprised if she even vomited at all and sugar does not cause hyperactivity. At most she might not want her tea if she's still full and her teeth will need a good brush.

ShoesEverywhere · 30/01/2022 15:17

There was one Halloween when my (then two year old) drunk a load of warm milk post trick or treating and then vomited everything up (pro tip: don't give warm milk!) weirdly including some whole boiled sweets I had no idea she'd been given. Luckily she didn't choke on them on the way up or down really...

I doubt she'll be sick - good luck!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 30/01/2022 15:18

She'll be fine. She might feel (or be) a bit sick and have a sore tummy before bed, but otherwise I doubt there'll be any side effects.

Also, are you sure she's eaten the lot and not shoved some of it down the side of the sofa to melt? Grin

NoShitHemlock · 30/01/2022 15:20

I doubt she will vomit, but I would imagine she will be bouncing off walls fairly soon! Once she has worn herself out there will probably be crying tbh.

DD used to be like this when I gave her a Swizzles double lolly.

Baystard · 30/01/2022 15:21

Ouch! I'd be mainly concerned about the come-down when it wears off, cue grumpy weepy hungover toddler!

educatingrati · 30/01/2022 15:24

Unless she has an allergy to any of the ingredients she'll be absolutely fine! She doesn't need to drink loads of water! Honestly op stop worrying Grin
