Period pants- anyone use them?

Hi everyone, I’m wanting to make a more eco friendly decision when it comes to period. I like the idea of period pants, has anyone used them? Does anyone have any recommendations on brands as well?

I know cheeky wipes do some for a reasonable price but unsure if they are any good?!

@SonicBroom

*You can’t tumble dry and they take an age on an airer and really need a radiator. If you don’t fully dry they’ll ruin and go stinky

You can’t use fabric softener either but a slosh of dettol laundry cleaner helps them smell fresh*

They sound a bit hard work to look after … I’d that right and if so is it worth it v tampons and pads???

I think they are worth it if you are prone to flooding
SonicBroom · 29/01/2022 22:47

Cheeky wipes have a better fuller arse shape - I don't have a huge arse, just like coverage!

Damn. I have a huge arse. This feels like it’s getting complicated.

Do they really have no stretch??

Magik01 · 29/01/2022 22:53

Oh wow so many replies! I’m very new to this so need to research.

Is the consensus that the cheaper ones are on average not as good? Currently on SMP at the moment so many is tight and although the modibodi looks great they have a heafty price tag to boot!

I also didn’t know m&s did them! I’ve seen primark but unfortunatly the closest one to me doesn’t stock them. Also seen the ones on ASOS. So much choice. From what I remember of my period it’s pretty average but as I’ve just had a baby that could all change!

I absolutely love period pants! Bought my first pair in 2020 and haven't looked back, now it's all I use. I have some of the expensive thinx ones and the cheeky wipes ones and find the cheeky wipes ones just as good! Although I would try some M&S ones next. I would buy a couple of different pairs from different places and see what works.

HalfBrick · 29/01/2022 22:55

@sonicbroom modibodi limited stretch, cheeky ones OK.

Honestly it depends what u feel constitutes work.

Disposables you often have to name a special trip out for. To more than one venue of they don't stock your brand. Two trips of they don't have enough left on the shelf. And of course the making sure you have enough if each absorbancy each time. So the time is spent pre period and u probably don't think about it.

Reusables the time is just kinda shifted to afterwards where u have to rinse then stain treat and wash.

Overall as I'm an irregular shopper and a bit of a last minute one I find it easier as I'm.not suddenly caught short or hoping the one stop has my brand.

Its obviously completely personal though

FinallyFree2022 · 29/01/2022 23:02

Does anyone else have the issue that they end up feeling cold and wet when pulling them back up after using the toilet (when not changing them obviously!). I find them great but that bit feels horrible.

Maybe it's just me, probably spending too long on the toilet

elbea · 29/01/2022 23:10

I got mine from T K Maxx in the clearance, were a few pounds each if you are on a budget!

Devo1818 · 29/01/2022 23:13

I got mine from Tu Sainsburys. Heavy flow and love them.

Laureatus · 29/01/2022 23:14

I use the Cheeky Pants, having previously used disposable pads. They're amazing - I can honestly say I totally forget I'm wearing them. I have all of their styles but I find the lace-topped ones the comfiest (and they come to n nice colours now, not just black! I have never had a very heavy flow so I can wear be pair all day without changing, and one pair all night with no other boosting etc, so for me it's a really easy swap. I was a size 8-10 but post baby I'm more of a 10 and their size 8 pants fit me fine in the lace topped style.

I originally got one of their package sets in their sale that had one of each style of the knickers, different sizes of reusable pads, a wet bag, wipes and a free gift of cloth make-up remover wipes. I found it a great way to start.

I think managing expectations is key to making the biggest difference and getting the most out of these things without putting yourself off them or into situations where they might not work well and again putting u off them and missing out on the benefits.

Would I risk wearing them all day at work without changing on days 2 and 3? Probably not.

Would it still make a difference to the environment in the long run if you used even a disposable pad as back up and reduced usage even slightly and left the soley pants usage to just at home. Yes.

These things are great don't get me wrong..Id never go back to disposables by choice if u paid me.

But that doesn't mean that they have super powers and can with stand what.most disposables would run from..if you expect them to do that u will be disappointed. They keep changing and can feel wet when full just like everything else on the market Would.

Don't work on an all.or nothing basis . You can still enjoy the environmental and the nore body friendly benefits of these extra options even if for work or holidays etc you stick to what you know.

Laureatus · 29/01/2022 23:23

@SonicBroom the cheeky pants don't move at all at night for me, and they have a black interior so no one will see anything on a quick change. I have a light flow with one medium day, and only on the medium day can they be a bit wet on the top, but I don't find it uncomfortably so (and sorry if tmi, but if they are I just wipe/blot it off with some paper when I go to the loo). I also have this period swimsuit which came from America: www.rubylove.com/product-page/period-swimwear-racerback-aztec
There are a few U.K. brands that do swimsuits too (I think Cheeky might stick some, can't remember), but I only found boring black ones!

Arucanafeather · 29/01/2022 23:23

Modibodi 24 hour ones! Wow!! Totally amazing. Got iron anaemia as a result of how heavy my peri menopausal flooding is and nothing could stops leaks till I thankfully tried these after a recommendation. Never leaked once and so comfy that I sometimes forgot I’ve even got my period. I also wear them swimming - fresh pair on under costume with a tampon and they feel great, can’t be seen and don’t bulge with water and I don’t have to worry about unexpectedly flooding and tampon not being up to the job!
Also wear them for longer runs too.

Laureatus · 29/01/2022 23:28

Oh and Ps @SonicBroom I don't find them hard to look after at all, I have made be 8 pairs which are all I need for my cycle, so I use them all once and wash them together at the end and n accordance with the instructions. I dry them hanging up in my utility and as my cycle's finished it doesn't matter how long I leave them, but overnight is usually fine. I put the he in the dryer with other underwear once, they still work fine though!

MilduraS · 29/01/2022 23:36

I like the modibodi seamless ones for under thin trousers/skirts. They're tiny when they turn up but after a wear and a wash they fit true to size. For overnight or lounging around the house I like the big classic ones.

Socialcarenope · 30/01/2022 01:48

@Repetitivebeats

I have some Wuka ones and have to say, I don't love them. Firstly, I find them quite bulky. Also, they don't last the whole day, so I find myself having to change mid afternoon. I mostly work home so it's doable but it's just a faff having to do a complete change. Finally, the synthetic fabric is not very breathable and I ended last period with a bout of thrush. They can be useful on days then you're not sure if you're going to come on (I have a coil so can have a few days of spotting before my period starts properly) but I still prefer to use tampons or reusable pads as my main source of protection
This is what I'm worried about. I have a predisposition to thrush anyway and wearing normal cotton underwear 24/7 sets it off as do tampons, unscented pads don't though.

I've got 1 pair of cheeky pants which I find great so have bought a pair of euka and a pair of modibodi to try as well. Once I've established they don't cause thrush and worked out which I like best I may buy more. I do have lightish periods though.

badg3r · 30/01/2022 02:06

I have some from uniqlo which are good! Less bulky than reusable pads and don't move around, but as others have said more synthetic than reusable pad and cotton pants so it gets a bit sweatier.

Pearbear · 30/01/2022 05:56

I’m peri menopause and have very heavy periods and finally Modibod have taken the stress out of each month. Disposable pads and washable pads would leak every month no matter how frequently I changed them. I tried a pair of Modibod heavy flow pants and they were a game changer, and immediately bought 7 more pairs and haven’t had a leak since. They regularly have deals on to buy them as they are pricey but worth every penny to me for taking the stress away each month. I’m out of the house at work for 13 hours each day so start the day with the pants and a washable pad, and then change the pad once or twice through the day before removing them and that’s enough to deal with a heavy flow and no leaking.

DockOTheBay · 30/01/2022 06:13

I've just ordered some Wuka ones from Babipur. I've been wanting to try them for a while and they have free delivery this weekend so giving it a go. 10% off with code BUDDY. They have wuka, modibodi, imse vimse and a few others.

I've been using washable pads for a few years but I find they get a bit twisted so I think pants will be better

Pixilicious · 30/01/2022 06:33

Does anyone use a reusable liner? I have some modibodi and primark knickers, both of which are great, and cheeky wipes reusable towels but I find the towels bulky and could do with something equivalent to a liner.

OhWhyNot · 30/01/2022 07:01

What about clots

I’m per menopause and now have much heavier periods and clotting too how are they with this?

I’m finding tampons and pads leak and I don’t like the moon cup at all

NichyNoo · 30/01/2022 09:33

They sound a bit hard work to look after … I’d that right and if so is it worth it v tampons and pads???

Well they’re definitely harder work than disposable sanitary products. But the thought of how many tampons I’ve thrown away in the last 30 years made me think that a bit of extra time is worth it. I pile mine up in the corner of the bathroom when I’m on my period (as I said earlier I have a light flow so they don’t look dirty or smell). At the end of my period I rinse them out in the sink with cold water then pop them in the washing machine on a 15 minute cool wash with some non-bio powder. Then hang them to dry - they dry within a day or two.

NichyNoo · 30/01/2022 09:36

I should add - I’m not being grim with the cold water and cool wash but this is the best way to clean them as blood is a protein and hot water will just cook it into the fabric.

SpaceDetective · 30/01/2022 09:42

I can't remember which ones I tried but I didn't get on with them, constantly felt wet and they did leak on occasion. I find reusable pads far better for me.

WukFit · 30/01/2022 09:50

I have modibodi pants and love them. I have a very heavy flow and need to change a tampax AND pad every hour. I now wear a tampax with modi bodi pants during the day - but they are so much more comfortable, hygienic and leakproof than pads and I don’t have that constant fear of leaking in the middle of a work day!

I wear just the pants overnight and have never had a leak. Previously, I always had a leak and stained PJs or bedclothes.

I wish they’d had these when I was young! Can’t sing their praises enough. 1my DD started her period last year and we bought her a bundle straight away. Great for school and sports.
