If you added your learner driver teen dc on to your car insurance

Can I ask how much it cost? We have been quoted £800 for 19 year old ds. Is this a lot? Is there a way we could do it more cheaply?

I’ve got to do this with my daughter so following with interest.

Pattygonia · 29/01/2022 08:19

Look at companies like veygo where you insure the teen directly for a set period of time - this worked out much cheaper for us

JudyGemstone · 29/01/2022 08:23

I’m considering this, car is in insurance group 12E so be too expensive I imagine. He’s waiting on his provisional license to come through currently.

Would your son pay towards the £800? Mine has a job so would be expected to at least contribute.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 29/01/2022 08:24

I second veygo or marmalade.

heinztomatosoup · 29/01/2022 08:26

We also used veygo, it was around £10 for two hours which was ideal the first couple
Of months when we only managed to practice once a week. Nearer the test I added her for 3 months for more frequent practice for around £120/130? From memory

FunnyInjury · 29/01/2022 08:31

Get individual learner cover for him, think we used a company called Collingwood. Was about £30 per month for 17 year old in 2020.
It’s designed for young drivers learning in a parents car and you can cancel penalty free when they pass their test.
Hth

3teens2cats · 29/01/2022 08:35

I also recommend a 'pay as you go' policy such as veygo. You book the exact number of days or hours you need through the app, its really easy to use. Unless you are taking the young person out every day it will work out much cheaper.

When they pass their test the insurance goes up so adding to our policy became even more expensive to start with. We continued with short term insurance, just booking it for when ds needed to use the car.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/01/2022 08:37

I hadn’t even thought of this. Ds is about to apply for his provisional.

Random65 · 29/01/2022 08:39

That Veygo is a good idea, can't believe how cheap it is.
My car is group 47E, and it's only £130 for two months to add a learner.

crossstitchingnana · 29/01/2022 08:48

Yes, we used Marmalade. It was actually a little more expensive than putting her own ours but we protected our NC bonus. We did pay for it mind you.

CrowningAvenue · 29/01/2022 08:57

Following with interest - car insurance is a minefield to me

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 29/01/2022 09:48

I just used Veygo yesterday. We paid £20 for 3 days (fingers crossed he will pass on Tuesday!).

ZeusandClio · 29/01/2022 10:00

I paid £281 for a year in October with Lloyds insurance and will cancel and get the balance back when he passes. Then it gets really expensive! Used Collingwood before and they were good too.

52andblue · 29/01/2022 10:03

Can anyone advise who is cheap to insure with after they pass please ? Ds will be 18, & driving an older model Ford Fiesta.

WicketWoo · 29/01/2022 10:12

We used Collingwood too. For a small and relatively old 1.2L car it is £215 in teens name for a year. It stops when they pass their test though but counts as a year of no claims (assuming no claims!).

It was cheaper to buy a car and insure it than to add the teen to our cars.

DD just passed and Direct Line were half the price of the quotes on compare the market. Her friend had the same experience.

That's on a Mini and a Ford Ka.

Kjr33 · 29/01/2022 10:29

What car are you insuring you child on? If it’s over a 1.2l engine it will be v expensive. I got mine an old banger to learn in because my car just isn’t suitable (auto and big engine)

We used Ingenie when ours passed. They had black boxes but they weren’t restricted on the hours they could drive. Their premiums went down over the year because they drove well.

In answer to the OP’s question we used Marmalade when ours were learning. It’s a standalone policy so if they do have an accident it doesn’t affect your policy.

Weaverspin · 29/01/2022 10:37

We used Marmalade for the learner insurance - you can choose how many months you want. I think it was about £70 a month?

Now he’s just passed his test, that insurance is now invalid, so I’ll be reading the suggestions with interest! He’ll be driving my car, which is only a 1.1l.

ENoeuf · 29/01/2022 10:43

Ohhh I’ve told dd I’ll add her to my insurance when she passes. Now thinking this will be a nightmare £££.

Toffeevodkaplease · 29/01/2022 10:46

We used veygo with one and marmalade with the other.
It was much cheaper that way.
When they passed we cancelled our insurance as adding them on was ridiculously expensive. We went with another provider which was still expensive - compared to before- but much more affordable. (Think 4 X more instead of 11 X more!)

ZeusandClio · 29/01/2022 11:47

For after they have passed, more than and insure the box have been good. Best quotes recently are on confused.com with Privilege, about £650 a year.

Ozanj · 29/01/2022 11:51

If they only have a provisional it shouldn’t impact your quote too much as they will only be driving with you in the car. It only cost me an extra £10 a year to add my neice.

autumnboys · 29/01/2022 11:53

We used a broker (Adrian Flux) to buy a separate insurance for our learner driver. When he passed, we cancelled that policy as well as my policy and got a joint policy for me and him. That cost about £750. The thing that helped us keep the cost down was having a Citroen C1 which is the lowest insurance band we could find.

autumnboys · 29/01/2022 11:55

We’re with insure the box which is a black box policy.
