Can you share an afternoon tea?

Going out tomorrow with a friend for afternoon tea. There is always way too much with AT.

Can you share one?

Obviously I can ask the hotel tomorrow but is this a social faux pas?

I wouldn't think they would serve 1 afternoon tea between 2, tbh.
You can always box up what's left, I suppose.

wheretogofromhere12 · 28/01/2022 22:32

I usually ask them to box up whatever I don't have as there's always quite a lot. I literally take it home and eat it about 30 mins later..!

gogohm · 28/01/2022 22:32

Depends where, I've ordered afternoon tea for my mum and I then bought 2 extra drinks and 2 sandwiches for my DD's (fussy) we shared the cakes

Redglitter · 28/01/2022 22:33

I dont think they'd do that but any place I've ever had one - and there's been a few 😊 - have always been more than happy to box up leftovers for you to take away

daisiesonmydress · 28/01/2022 22:33

Yeah. It would look bad to ask to share, wouldn't it?

Why is afternoon tea so big? Who eats it all in one go?

I used to work somewhere that did a cream tea for one which had 2 scones. Plenty of people would order a pot of tea and a cream tea and split the scones. Can see how this is any different. Only thing is some places might have a minimum of two people to order it for the table or something. Also depends if it’s the sort of place you can go and just have a cuppa, or if everyone is expected to eat too.

I'm assuming they're children? I think that's a bit different to splitting one afternoon tea between two adults, which I don't think is ok - it's normally given as a per head price.
HardbackWriter · 28/01/2022 22:35

I think the reason it's so big is that you're supposed to eat it slowly over a long time - which is also why halving the cost but still taking up the same space feels cheeky.

Mooloolabababy · 28/01/2022 22:36

Been to afternoon tea a few times and always brought the box of leftovers home with us 😋

We usually have it at a local place where it is created specifically for 2 people to share. We eat the syllabub things in glasses first and the scones with cream and jam cos you can't take the lovely glass bowls of cream and jam home. Everything else you can't manage to eat can be taken home in 2 separate boxes if you don't live with the other person.Unlimited tea and coffee.

I have an afternoon tea delivery business and you could easily share the one we offer.

HelloBunny · 28/01/2022 23:14

I’d share an Afternoon Tea, no problem. Some places are per person, so just ask. And order a second pot of tea. We did this at a nice hotel, they do two scones. And they offered extra sandwiches (we were at the last sitting) no extra charge. So there was plenty for two, and I was glad we didn’t order for two!

TolkiensFallow · 28/01/2022 23:21

You could order a cream tea or ask them to box up the afternoon tea.

In all honestly I do think it’s a bit off to share one. Like going for dinner and sharing a meal but taking up to settings. Others will disagree but I think the service industry has had a hard time lately and customers who support them should be prioritised

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/01/2022 23:23

Don’t eat breakfast or lunch, then enjoy every morsel.

Yes. I agree. Feels mean and I've so tried to support the hospitality industry.

That's the plan with boxed up extras

Went out for lunch yesterday DS and girlfriend shared a pudding. I ordered the cheeseboard it was enormous but came with four plates I guess they're expecting everyone to dig in.

I would take the leftovers from an afternoon tea home

whichiswitch · 29/01/2022 00:00

This reminds me of a time DH and went to a tea room in Wales. I ordered an afternoon tea and DH ordered something else. The waitress was very surprised to learn that we weren't sharing the afternoon tea Grin

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/01/2022 00:07

I've shared in plenty of places. Three of us would often share tea for 2. First time, we were advised by the waitress to do that.

nightmarelife · 29/01/2022 00:15

Oh dear - I can eat every but - every time!!

DappledThings · 29/01/2022 00:20

Me. It's not that much. Usual is what, 3 small sandwiches, a scone and 3-4 tiny cakes.

Had one for a fancy hen do once where all 5 of us ordered extra sandwiches! And last one I took my parents and DC. We ordered for 4 so DC could share but they decided they didn't like any of it (weirdos). We had no problem finishing 4 between 3. And my parents are stick thin with the appetites of birds.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/01/2022 06:29

I find it's usually too much in one go, equivalent of a full sandwich, one or two large scones with jam and cream and a few other cakes too. You wouldn't normally eat all that at the same time unless it's presented as 'afternoon tea'.

I'm usually fed up with it after about half of what you get and it's usually really expensive for what you get compared with just a sandwich or just tea and cake.

You could plan to take home the leftovers or order one afternoon tea and one tea and maybe a scone or sandwich and share the excess over the afternoon tea.

Depends how hungry you are and how much you like cake I suppose.

Pregnant02 · 29/01/2022 07:33

Despite being pregnant with a huge appetite I couldn’t finish the afternoon tea I had earlier this week, it consisted of 8 finger sandwiches with different fillings, 4 mini quiches, a large sausage roll, a huge scone with jam and cream plus 6 mini cakes. There was far too much for just one person and I ended up leaving some of the sandwiches, one quiche and bring 4 of the cakes home! definitely could have been shared between two people however it was very clear you pay per head.

Probably ought to be embarrassed to say that without lunch, I wouldn’t need boxes, but I’m not Grin

Enjoy.
