Easy listening books - fantasy?

I've had a series of bad health issues and I just want to be able to lie and listen to a good fantasy series on audible. Nothing nobel prize winning - just light entertaining.

I've listened to all of Harry Potter, all of Lord of the Rings, the Sookie Stackhouse True Blood series.

What else might I like?

Terry Prachett.

Terry Prachett.

HTH! Grin

OperationRinka · 28/01/2022 17:52

Terry Pratchett.

Also Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London

I've tried over the years and not got into TP - which one should I try?

What about time travelling historians? There’s a series which starts with the title “ Just one damn thing after another” about historians travelling back to significant moments in history. ( secret project). It has a number of actors rather than one narrator so rather like listening to a play.

Divebar2021 · 28/01/2022 17:57

It’s definitely not great literature by the way

OperationRinka · 28/01/2022 17:59

The time travel thing is Jodie Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's

For Pratchett I'd start with Mort (Death series), Wyrd Sisters (Witches series), Guards Guards (City Watch series) or Good Omens (standalone, not Discworld)

PinaColadaNeeded · 28/01/2022 18:01

Rivers of London

A discovery of Witches

I've also enjoyed the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka

Trudi Canavan is a pleasure on audiobooks, Start with The Magicians Guild, the first in the Black Magician Trilogy...if you like her she has loads of others so you can have quite a few to move onto!

If you want something more epic try Name of The Wind.

GlumyGloomer · 28/01/2022 18:04

The Belgariad, David Eddings

UnaOfStormhold · 28/01/2022 18:05

Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys is good fun and beautifully read by Lenny Henry.

A Natural History of Dragons features a woman in an alternative Regency-era world setting off to research dragons to the outrage of her family.

The series starting with Penric's Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold is lovely. Curse of Chalion is also a favourite but I don't like the narrator so much.

You might also enjoy the Iron Druid chronicles - about a druid (he tells people that he's 21 and it's not his fault if they think he means years rather than his actual decades) getting into all sorts of trouble with various gods, kept sane by his wolfhound Oberon who has the best lines in the book.

With Terry Pratchett you could try Small Gods first, or Equal Rites.

I quite like the Eragon series in the same way that I liked Harry Potter - clearly for kids but still enjoyable and sucks you in.

doadeer · 28/01/2022 18:08

So many good suggestions!

I did a history degree so love all that stuff!

I forgot I've read a discover of witches and enjoyed that

Naomi Novik's Temeraire series: Napoleonic wars with added dragons.

Jfw82 · 28/01/2022 18:12

James maxwell - the evermen saga starting with enchantress
David eddings - the belgariad
Nora roberts - trilogy that starts with year one
Lisa shearin - raine benares series

Anything by Garth Nix

Sorry, a child accidentally kicked my phone!

Another vote for Neil Gaiman

Curioushorse · 28/01/2022 18:18

Naomi Novik is amazing.

If you want proper, massive fantasy, you could lose a year of your life to Robin Hobb (I did. And have no regrets). Brandon Sanderson is great too. Joe Abercrombie is very popular.

If you want more YA, then Holly Black, Leigh Bardugo or Sarah Maas are all good.

Kudupoo · 28/01/2022 18:28

Another vote for Rivers of London! The narrator is fab

Brogues · 28/01/2022 18:46

Children of Blood and Bone
Raybearer

TooTiredForAdventure · 28/01/2022 19:06

Robin Hobb. Start with Assassin's Apprentice. You're welcome 🙂

Oh my! I don't know where to start. I might need to kindle some as audible does take a loooong time to get through a book!

I love Sookie Stackhouse!
Another vote for Jodie Taylor, everyone recommends her historical series but she has other series which are equally good -have a look at 'White Silence', book 1 of 3.
Melissa F Olsen - Boundary Crossed.
Adrian Tchaikovsky - Children of Time.

ParsleySageRosemary · 28/01/2022 19:58

Definitely David Eddings.
If you want a very loooong read, the 14/ 15 books of the Wheel of Time series started off and ended well, but suffered imho from being dragged out for sales in the middle. Try the prequel ‘New Spring’ and see if it grabs you.

Bloatstoat · 28/01/2022 20:10

I like everything you listed in your op, I'm currently really enjoying The King's Watch series by Mark Hayden : it starts with 'The Thirteenth Witch'. I also love Jodie Taylor. Young adult which I listened to as audio books which were great - the spells linger series by Sebastian de Castell, very well read.
