Baby born at 36 weeks

Hi so I have pre-eclampsia and my blood pressure is being controlled properly with meds so they've booked me a section for 37 weeks but my consultant has said they may want to bring her earlier. If anyone's baby was born at 36 weeks can you tell me if they needed special care or not? I know this won't mean mine will or won't but I like to have stories and opinions on this sort of thing. Thanks everyone!

My DS was born at 36 weeks exactly 23 years ago today!! He was small 4lb 6oz and needed feeding via a tube in his nose for about 10 days so although he was in the special care unit he didn't need any other help. We stayed in for 12 days until he could feed from a bottle and put enough weight on. Good luck! 💕

Thank you so much everyone! My BP has stabilised now so it's looking like I might be able to make it to my section at 37 weeks :)

My DH was a 33 weeker in the 80's and is one of the healthiest people I know. The only impact it ever had on him is he wears glasses.

Your baby's weight sounds great. Mine was born the day before her due date weighing 5lb 14oz due to an undiagnosed late IUGR and is fit as a fiddle in spite of it. She was formula fed from 2 weeks, we made sure she got colostrum though.

It depends! It could be minimal extra care such as going under the jaundice light for a bit. Or could be something more. Your consultant will know what they're doing, scary I know, but all will be fine xx

My youngest was born at 35 weeks due to foetal anaemia, they/I had two steroid injections before my section to help her lungs.

DC2 weighed 2oz less than their 38 week sibling. They were whisked off to neonatal for a blood transfusion, spent 12 hours there, then 12 hours stepped down in HDU. From there they came to me on transitionary care and we stayed there for almost two weeks under the IV lamps for jaundice. After two weeks they’re not concerned about it crossing the blood/brain barrier so let us go home even though the levels were still higher than normal.

They’re 4 in a few weeks, I’m not entirely sure where the time has gone.

Good luck OP.

I think with that weight there's a really good chance of minimal complications. I went into labour with my first at 36 +6 and with my second at exactly 37 weeks.

Eldest was 7lbs 7oz and youngest was 6lb 13 oz. I was home with both the same day and they're now both strapping 6 footers.

Wishing you the very best of luck with it all xx

newtb · 28/01/2022 18:18

Was born at 32 weeks, kept in for 7wks until I was 7lbs - long time ago.

Claud88 · 28/01/2022 18:20

Hi. My baby was born at 36+1 and was absolutely fine. I had 2 steroid injections the day before to help with his lungs development and all went well. Good luck xxx

Claud88 · 28/01/2022 18:22

He was born at 36 +1 & weighed 7lbs8 🙈

My dd was born at 36 weeks she was 6lb 2oz and needed no special care, she did develop jaundice in her first week but cleared quickly and required no further treatment. She’s now 15 and 5ft 6 and still growing.

simonthedog · 28/01/2022 18:28

DD1 was born at 36 weeks 6lb and DD2 35 weeks 5lb 14, Neither needed special care. Both struggled with latching on to feed and were a bit jaundiced and needed phototherapy.

Blahblahblah40 · 28/01/2022 18:38

I had Pre-eclampsia and DC was 36 weeks when delivered, spent 2 weeks in SCBU/NICU. Mainly because she was only 4lb 11oz, had she been 5lbs and feeding well she wouldn’t have been. They gave me steroids to strengthen her lungs and scans etc before delivery. Induced at 9:30pm and she was born at 2.20pm the next day. I was prepped for epidural but didn’t have the time so gas and air and all was a-ok. Please don’t panic if they do decide to induce. Staff will be well prepared and experienced and better for you for baby to be delivered early and both of you are well. Pre-eclampsia shouldn’t be messed about with. Only downside was I couldn’t breastfeed but tbh I now have a completely healthy 7 year old who bounces out the door every day for school so that doesn’t matter much to me anymore!

Best of luck. 😊

My DD was born at 36 weeks as I had pre-eclampsia. She was small (5lb) even accounting for her earliness, which is common in babies of eclamptic pregnancies. She spent a couple of days in the HDU and was tube fed for that time. After that my milk came in, she got the hang of breastfeeding and we were both fine.

She's now nineteen and at university. Smile

It's very, very good news that they're monitoring you closely. PE is dangerous for you both if it goes unspotted and untreated, but you are in their radar and they will do everything needed to keep you both safe and well. Best wishes to you both

lavenderfine · 28/01/2022 18:55

I'm booked in for steroid injections on the 2 days before my section is scheduled which has made me feel a lot better too. Thank you so much everyone for all the advice and stories it's made me feel so much better. I've no concerns about her birth weight as they're thinking she'll be big anyway :) I will Update Thursday when she's born if I remember :)

Also on the jaundice front which lots are saying. I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy too but very late on and no blood pressure meds. He was born 39 weeks but was exhausted and struggled to feed. He was jaundice and needed the phototherapy too. I'm ok with that, just very selfishly I don't want to be separated from her 🙈 xx

A long time ago I know but I was born a full two months early so around 32-33 weeks just after the war & before the NHS. I weighed just under 3lb. No special care as there really wasn’t much then but did just fine. Was told I slept in a shoe box and, to my eternal shame, had a sanitary towel as a bonnet to keep me warm Grin

BookFiend4Life · 29/01/2022 19:57

OP they have vests for phototherapy now, could you get one and take it with you? They may be able to keep her in with you then

fairgame84 · 30/01/2022 14:01

Most postnatal wards can administer phototherapy so baby can with mum. Our post natal ward will do single and double phototherapy but if baby needs triple or quadruple they have to come to neonatal unit.

Scbchl · 30/01/2022 14:09

My daughter was born at 36 weeks. She personally was absolutely fine.. id never had the lung maturing injections they can give. We were kept in for three nights just because her age. Other than at one point them being concerned about her blood sugars she managed to sort it herself and maintain them and done fine.

Most babies I believe are fine but all are different some may need a little bit of help but hopefully she will be fine as will be preterm rather than premature which is before 34 weeks. Speak to your consultant hopefully he can reassure you.

lavenderfine · 30/01/2022 21:10

Hi everyone! I've been admitted to hospital now where they think I will stay until baby is delivered unless I can persuade them to let me go home for a day to see my other DC. My BP is struggling to stabilise and my symptoms are worse. I've had steroids today and due more tomorrow, she'll be here Thursday latest which is 37 exactly. I'm 36+3 today and no doctors I've seen have been concerned about her age so far :)

Hope you get to Thursday.

My ds was born at 36+4 (waters went at 36+3) he was 7lb 1oz. They did advise that they had a cot available in the nursery, but it wasn't required. I had him the very early hours and I went home the day after. The main thing is that he was really scrawny, and actually needed tiny baby clothes (the ones that go up to about 7lb / 7.5lb) at first. The last few weeks is when they lay down the fat so he missed out on that.

I always say with him that he came out screaming and hasn't stopped since. (He is now 14)

Tiredmum100 · 30/01/2022 21:26

Mine was born 36 weeks to the day. We were in hospital for 5 days as he needed to have IV antibiotics as I group strep B. He did have a few problems, such as reflux and a hernia, and his testicle hadn't descended. He had an op when he was about 5 to put all the right. He's 10 and fine now.

Jody21 · 30/01/2022 22:52

I was induced at 36 weeks with each of mine, also due to pre eclampsia. They were a bit small, around 6lbs each but other than a touch of jaundice that cleared up within a few days they were fine. Best of luck!

lavenderfine · 04/02/2022 18:26
