What’s something you buy which is cheap/basic that is really good?

Mine is bars of unscented soap from (predictably) Aldi, and also Waitrose own salt and vinegar crisps.

What gems are in your life?

AirWick Pure Soft Cotton bathroom air freshner . I buy it in the supermarket, it's fresh and citrusy, so different from other cloying scents.

Alondra · 30/01/2022 04:39

..and as toilet paper goes...

I love Aldi's extra soft 3 ply double length. Same as Quilton but cheaper.

lborgia · 30/01/2022 06:53

@Popsicle33 - that sounds quite sinister and threatening.

Either she's correct, in which case she can say what she wants. Or she's wrong, in which case I'm sure Elemis will cope.

Do you think they'll sue MN to get her real name and hunt her down Hmm

Jjjjjjjjj · 30/01/2022 06:55

Cerave products are miricals for bad skin like chicken skin arms. And sulfur soap for random rashes.

Twinkleylight · 30/01/2022 08:00

Baby bottle sterilising tablets are brilliant for brightening up teaspoons and manky teacips & mugs. I make up a solution according to the packet instructions and soak my teaspoons monthly.

They're also fab for getting rid of the limescale in the loo, just chuck a few tabs down before you go to bed.

RichTeaCheddars · 30/01/2022 08:14

@Twinkleylight in the bowl or the cistern?

Chakraleaf · 30/01/2022 08:16

Influencers should be ashamed really for starting a trend of putting unstoppables in wax burner.

I've started taking tea out with me and hot chocolate in a flask for the kids. Saves so much money and quing.

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

Oh, and I think the best dark chocolate is the Co-OP's own brand 85% one. Always grab one if I see a Co-op.
I agree, co op own brand are really good quality. We now live near a co op, they stock lots of local item too which is great.
Twinkleylight · 30/01/2022 08:33

@RichTeaCheddars I put it in the bowl because I have a closed cistern but I don't see why you can't put it in the cistern. It cleans the pan up really nicely and removes stains.

Subscription laundry and dishwasher tablets. They have started doing cleaning products too.

Those Skinny Whip bars in Poundland and Homebargains

£1 for 5 bars of chocolate less than 99 kcal each and they’re divine!!!

LoisLane66 · 30/01/2022 09:25

I'm loving this thread. It's giving me so many new ideas. 😁

KaptainKaveman · 30/01/2022 09:27

Good old blue tub Nivea. Doesn't cost much and it such a good moisturiser. I use it on my arms and legs as well as face/neck.

loloballlolo · 30/01/2022 09:48

For any dry shampoo addicts - a box of cornflour is a very cheap substitute and better. I put mine in an empty herb jar to allow easy sprinkling. One box cornflour is about 35p and lasts about 2 years! One can of dry shampoo is about £2 and lasts about 3-4 months.

Nah, if I get to the point where I am putting cornflour in my hair I think I will just curl up in a corner and give up on life!

The Pink Stuff paste. Great for sinks.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/01/2022 09:57

i used asda Smart price dish washer tablets, can't get them for ages now sadly, but they are great.
also use the dishwasher powder, only can get finish, but halve the amount.

Oblomov22 · 30/01/2022 09:59

Lidl and Aldi salt and vinegar crisps.

abigailsnan · 30/01/2022 10:00

Pure BB tinted moisturising cream from Home & Bargain great for everyday wear a tube is just £1.99 and as good as any of the expensive ones, comes in 3 shades well worth buying imo my skin has never looked so good.

RedToothBrush · 30/01/2022 10:05

Slightly left field but IKEA Murvels! I need to get a few more as i only managed to get a couple as they were all but out of stock when i went to get.

A mighty 75p.

What?! I hear you say.

Still none the wiser?

If i said 'do you suffer from tripping over thousands of school shoes, trainers, sports shoes, the second you walk in the door' because you long since ran out of space to store shoes, then you need some.

You stack your shoes on them, one on top of the other and double your space.

Theres only 3 of us and i dont have a lot of shoes really, but bloody hell they take over.

Amazing.

Life changing.

misskatamari · 30/01/2022 10:06

Looking forward to reading through all of these.

My current favourites are Aldi "pringles" they used to be a bit crap, but they've changed them recently and I now prefer them to actual Pringles. Great crunch and they're something like 89p a stack. Also also chocolate is amazing! The Choceur milk, and the moser Roth ones are my favourites. So tasty.

Also Aldi purple mouthwash is just like listerine but soooo much cheaper. I think that's 89p too, whereas listerine is about 4x the price.

hangrylady · 30/01/2022 10:10

@Rina66

Oh thanks everyone for the heads up re the unstoppables, I'll stop doing that then. I used to buy unstoppable wax melts from B & M but they stopped making them hence why I used the beads. It wasn't for cheapness, it was because I really love the smell, I never use cheap wax melts, they're just awful.
I got some cheap wax melts from Asda (the fresh linen scent). I was pleasantly surprised, not overpowering and really nice smell.
zingally · 30/01/2022 10:20

@StarryNightSparkles

Alberto Balsam shampoo and conditioner. Think they are £1 a bottle. My hair looks and feels fab plus it smells lovely. Since I started using it my hair has no tangles.
Same!

A friend who has really thick curly coarse hair has been using this shampoo for years. So I figured if it could handle her difficult hair-type, it could handle my fine, straight hair!
And as a general "every day" shampoo, it's great!

catwomando · 30/01/2022 10:20

@NightmareSlashDelightful is it this one please ?
