What’s something you buy which is cheap/basic that is really good?

Mine is bars of unscented soap from (predictably) Aldi, and also Waitrose own salt and vinegar crisps.

What gems are in your life?

Cheap gin but decent tonic (e.g flavoured fever tree)

LSLLM · 29/01/2022 22:46

Icelands/Food Warehouse own brand chips, and their southern friend chicken tenders are amazing - like a really really good McDonald’s chicken select 😂

Anything Aldi!

I have a large parlour palm house plant
in my bathroom, too heavy to move. It got a severe attack of scale insects, and the toxic smelling killer from the garden centre worried me. I had anti bacterial hand wash in the bathroom, and a spray bottle. I mixed a couple of squirts of hand wash, and half bottle of water, drenched the plant in it, overnight the scale insects were decimated. The plant is fine! No smell, no dragging a heavy plant downstairs, and the treatment has lasted for many months.

Shampoo bar from Home Bargains. £1. Bloody brilliant and no plastic.

I would seriously advise removing your post

E45 body lotion in the blue and gold pump bottle. Looks much nicer than their usual clinical looking packaging, has no smell, is great if you have itchy skin. TBH I started using it on my face when pricier moisturiser ran out, and I am perfectly happy with it.

Peacock's men's cotton t-shirts. I have two black ones, happy to wear at work with statementy earrings or necklace, posh scarf, etc and they look very smart.

CelticPromise · 29/01/2022 23:42

Sainsbury's fish fingers.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 29/01/2022 23:46

Primark crop top style bras! About £2.50 each, super comfy, no wires, but still give some shape.

BoffinMum · 29/01/2022 23:51

Hankynamatata, cola, or get a toilet renovation kit from HG

nalabae · 29/01/2022 23:54

Also baked beans I think are better than Heinz. I usually do buy non branded most things taste the same if not similar

I have lived in mine since I started working from home , only wear a proper bra if I go out out now
@macon they also do man line but I haven’t check that out as DH is still very snobbish with his perfumes ..
But I seriously got rid of all mine as I love the Superdrug’s ones.
Anyway if you google up Artiscent Atelier, you will find more info from bloggers etc.
But why did you get rid of your branded perfume?

BobbieT1999 · 30/01/2022 00:42

Aqueous cream for eczema - only thing that helps clear it up when I get a flare it's brilliant.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 30/01/2022 00:46

Lidl fish fingers, I love them and they cost about £1.35 for 20.

Also Lidl, the white chocolate with freeze dried strawberries in it, so good!

Bunnyfuller · 30/01/2022 01:05

Cannot remember enough of these!

UrbanMage · 30/01/2022 01:08

Primark and revolution for make up, especially eyeshadow palettes.
We swapped to hankies instead of tissues and it's saved us a fortune when covid hit us.
Bar soaps. I love pears but have had some lovely handmade ones in The last few years.

Sainsbury's own brand non bio is better than fairy.

Also Aldi skincare stuff is lovely. As are their candles. And chocolate.

I bought Astral after reading rave reviews on a similar thread to this, very strong scent and very greasy. I’m trying to use it up as a body moisturizer but don’t even like it for that.

Wilkinsons hair turban (about £1) does a pretty good job.

Switching to tretinoin from alldaychemist and stopping bothering with expensive serums and moisturisers (or even the monthly dermatica scheme) has saved me lots over the years. After all, it is the only skin care product that’s proven to actually reduce wrinkles (rather than just masking them)

Sainsburys squash is just as good as Robinsons and I prefer their red label teabags to the big name ones.

Benvolio · 30/01/2022 01:27

www.beautybay.com/l/beautybay/ all the own brand Beauty Bay products I have tried have been brilliant. Especially the solid 'buttercup' cleansing balm and the spot cream. I got a very pigmented blusher and have repeat-ordered a niacinamide serum too.

CatsnCoffee · 30/01/2022 01:37

@anne2650 if it’s the Papaya one or the Banana one, I agree. First shampoo bar I’ve tried that doesn’t leave a residue. Smells pleasant too without being sickly.

Asdas own brands chips, roasties - taste better than any double the price brands and better range and quality. Lux soap which I loved as a child so cheap but luxuriously lathering, bubbly and non drying on skin. I hate shower gels now so does my skin!
