I never realised my milk drinking habits were strange! Are yours?

Partly inspired from another thread where someone said that only people over forty drink cow's milk.

I am close to 40 at 37, but I only drink semi-skimmed cows milk and have done for years. I'll drink almond or soya if a friend or family provides it, obviously, but I also see it as knowingly looking at the more expensive price. Any one else?!

Disclaimer: I know I don't drink as much milk as other people anyway, so no judgement here just curiosity!

Are there any other items that people under or over a certain age are probably not having?

@EnterFunnyNameHere

One thing I find interesting is the number of people who don't drink milk for ethical reasons, but do eat cheese... cows milk cheese... how is that more ethical?!
I don’t drink milk but I eat both meat and dairy. I don’t pretend there’s anything ethical about my milk non-drinking. I just cannot imagine why anyone would want to drink milk. Make a white sauce with it: yes. Make batter: yes. Drink it: nope.

I suspect the fair weather virtue signallers drink oat or whatever milk but still have proper cheese because plant milk tastes ok but vegan cheese is 🤢

EnterFunnyNameHere · 27/01/2022 22:38

@BurntToastAgain I think you're right - all about ethics until a proper melty cheese toasty is on the line!

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 27/01/2022 22:38

Thank you everyone! I feel I have learnt a lot about milk and how people drink (or not) it and not giving a fuck.

Do you mean drinking glasses of milk in place of water/ juice or other drinks? I don’t really know anyone who’s not a child who would pour a glass of milk to drink. Milk is generally used for things like tea, coffee, making a cheese sauce etc. I would agree a lot of adults probably don’t drink cows milk as a beverage.

However most adults I know drink cows milk in tea/ coffee and on cereal etc though including all those under 40, the only exceptions being my vegan friends.

coronabeer · 27/01/2022 22:40

I've never heard of anyone who chooses not to drink cows milk for ethical reasons who would then knowingly eat milk made from same.

From what I understand, some people who cannot tolerate cows milk for health reasons can tolerate butter and cheese - I think it's to do with the levels of lactose present.

BocolateChiscuits · 27/01/2022 22:43

To the people who say non-dairy milk tastes bad, are you actually drinking cups of milk?

I find I use milk mostly in something else, like pancakes, or cheese sauce or cakes or hot drinks. With the exception of tea/coffee I don't think you can tell the difference between a dairy and non-dairy version - I've even done blind pancake taste tests on my family to test the theory. So, why not save a cow the bother and use the non-dairy? Even if you still use a bit of dairy for adding to tea say, it's still a big reduction.

I like oat for general purpose, soy more for particular recipes where I find the high protein levels work best, and recently have been trying hazelnut in things like hot choc or rice pudding where the nutty flavour is a bonus.

Cows milk is for baby cows - utterly weird to drink the milk made for a baby of another species

It’s just fat and water, hormones and sugar all congealed together with a little bit of pus from the poor cows mastitis

Having breastfed I could never steal the milk off another mother just because I liked the taste. Anyway, cows milk smells disgusting and has an awful coating feeling in the mouth.

I occasionally enjoy a small glass of milk, but don't think I will now after that description...

@BurntToastAgain

I don’t drink any milk or any description. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Me neither. It's unnecessaryGrin
gogohm · 27/01/2022 22:55

My DD's have cows milk, they aren't vegan (one is veggie but adores cheese)

BertieBotts · 27/01/2022 22:55

There isn't pus in milk in the UK, or anywhere in Europe. If a cow gets mastitis the milk is not allowed to be sold for consumption.

Not saying it's not unethical because the dairy trade like most animal farming is horrific. But there is no pus in milk.

gogohm · 27/01/2022 22:56

That said I personally don't drink any milk, drinks are without etc. but I use cows milk for cooking and eat cheese

urghrtypically · 27/01/2022 23:00

My DC have cows milk on cereal and I have chocolate milkshake made with cows milk.

PattyPan · 27/01/2022 23:00

I don’t think any of my friends put milk in tea or coffee, people would think you’re weak Grin

Mmmmmmbop90 · 27/01/2022 23:05

Pus wise - there is an ‘acceptable level of pus cells per litre’ I think it’s something like 200 million cells for UK milk and 400 million for EU?

tillyandmilly · 27/01/2022 23:05

Alternative milk isn’t rank! I drink oatly barista and is lovely and creamy! Yes it’s expensive but worth it - I only drink it in coffees and teas - I don’t eat cereal etc

Dillydollydingdong · 27/01/2022 23:07

Almond milk contains about 2% almonds. A lot of rice in there as well. Semi skim cow's milk for me.

Thank god I'm not the only one who knows this. Do people really just lap up anything they read online??

I know a dairy farmer. I know how well looked after his cows are. The ignorance on this thread isn't surprising through.

That seems unlikely.

Given that coffee shop menus are mostly composed of different ways of serving milky coffee, I think few people are liking milk in coffee as anything to do with weakness.

I don’t like milk in coffee. That’s why I drink mine black. No further considerations.

Wafflesnsniffles · 27/01/2022 23:09

Oat milk is awesome. I switched a couple of years ago. :) Cows milk is for calves.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 27/01/2022 23:11

I like oat milk but generally drink dairy, I'm 36, DH is the same. I really like hazelnut milk but find it quite rich, it's amazing in coffee and hot chocolate. I used to like unsweetened almond milk, but drank a lot of it when I had gestational diabetes and heartburn and cow's milk would make my sugars spike. I can't abide soya milk, it's awful.

Oat milk is poison for some of us, though.
ClumpingBambooIsALie · 27/01/2022 23:15

If you're weird, I'm weirder. Mid-thirties and not only buy cows' milk every week, but different ones for different things: skimmed for tea and cereal (but not muesli), semi-skimmed for coffee, muesli and porridge, and whole (preferably Jersey, gold top or that Graham's Gold Smooth stuff) for drinking. Combined with my yoghurt, cream cheese and butter habits, it's amazing I have to supplement vit D and calcium.

PattyPan · 27/01/2022 23:15

That seems unlikely.

I think it is largely true in my circle. Like how no one under 40 puts sugar in their tea/coffee (other than whatever Starbucks concoctions come with it in already).

ikeepseeingit · 27/01/2022 23:18

Never heard that! I’m mid 20s and I would say 30% of friends will drink an alternative. Some of them due to intolerance. I have tried oat milk and I don’t mind it, but it doesn’t add the fat that makes hot chocolate or cakes/puddings taste nice. Not that I drink milk a lot, but when I do I go for full fat Grin
