Which school tights have you found good, Reception child

I'm at my wits end, dd spends most of the walk to and from school pulling her tights up.

We've tried lots of brands, they seem to get lower and lower around the gusset until its half way to her knees, and she's forever hoiking them up.

Which brand of tights have you found best for a tall skinny girl?

If you've found this page in search of tights that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best tights useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

Just get her trousers?

piscis · 26/01/2022 08:51

I've thought about posting this myself as we have the same problem!
DD wears trousers now when it is quite cold, but she prefers dresses and I'd also like to find some decent tights! I haven't found any so far, but have only tried supermarket ones so far.

RedCandyApple · 26/01/2022 08:52

We use leggings under dresses and skirts

I've tried trousers, thye fall down, even on the tightest button. She is an absolute bean pole, obviously doesn't have any hip definition yet, so they just slide down. I've tried sizing down but they sit inches from her ankle. She can't even wear a skirt, she has to have pinafores as she can't keep a skirt up either.

Could you use my mum’s trick of an extra pair of pants over the top of them to hold them up? We find M&S pretty good for tights, and a John Lewis

kos88 · 26/01/2022 08:57

I’ve got trousers for mine - M&S school trousers have an adjustable waist. I recently got some tights from Tu (Sainsbury) and they’re staying up well so far.

Soontobe60 · 26/01/2022 08:59

Sometimes it’s a problem with the fabric that their knickers are made of. They can be slippery, so tights slide off them. Or it could be that once the tights are washed and tumble dried they shrink, or the fibres become too tight so they lose their stretch.
Does she have to wear tights? Maybe just get her long socks. Or as has already been suggested, leggings.

Floydthebarber · 26/01/2022 09:01

Sainsburys have very narrow waistbands. We buy them for dd1 who is tall and very slim. They also do the thick opaque ones in younger sizes which are stretchier than the wool ones.

Dd2 who is average height and wider finds Sainsburys too tight.

statetrooperstacey · 26/01/2022 09:06

None, they all start off well then Once they’ve been washed a few times they get all twisted and short , black leggings and black socks or knee length socks.

AnnaSW1 · 26/01/2022 09:06

M&S cable knit ones stay up.

wendz86 · 26/01/2022 09:07

I use the M&S body sensor tights for my tall skinny 6 year old . Have to size up generally though i find as she has long legs.

Accidentgirlfriend · 26/01/2022 09:20

Could you get her some pants same colour as her tights or a pair of shorts to go over the top of them

UnalliterativeGeorge · 26/01/2022 09:22

M&S here too for mine who refuses to wear trousers and hates long socks more than tights. She also runs hot so can't wear leggings or she's roasting. Roll on spring!

Newyearnewyearnew · 26/01/2022 09:24

Cable knit (any brand) are best, but non are perfect.

LakeShoreD · 26/01/2022 09:29

We used to have the sane problem but these ones from John Lewis are really good:

DD isn’t allowed trousers for school but generally I find trousers are even worse for us, if they’re slim enough to stay up then they’re usually half mast!

TickledOnion · 26/01/2022 09:30

I would buy a size up. My DD wears 7-8 skirts as she has a small waist but 7-8 tights fall down. 9-10 seem to stay up.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 09:34

Might they be falling down because they are too short rather than too wide? I used to have to size up in tights for DD so that she got the length she needed.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 09:35

I also have this problem with tights and I am no beanpole! I do have long legs though so need to size up.

Kindnessandcourage · 26/01/2022 09:40

I have got a thick fleece ones from amazon they protect dd against cold and are thick and long. I used to buy a size down as dd was quite skinny when in reception.

Redlorryyellowduck · 26/01/2022 09:40

Right I'm off to M and S to get cable knit and body sensor, in a size up, thank you all.
I dread to think how much money I've wasted on bloody tights!

I know it sounds silly.

But firstly i find they fall down more if they are too small as oppose to too big. I always size up.

Secondly have you watched her put them on. I find my daughter puts them on feet up and them pulls them round her bum and waist. I think she needs to pull them up to her knees. And then release the fabric ankle to knee and bunch it all up there. Then get them to top of thighs. Then go back to the knees and release all the fabric knees upwards. Then pull up
To waist. Then grab the fabric upper thighs and redistribute to waist.

And then repeat every time you wee etc.

EcoCustard · 26/01/2022 10:11

Dd in reception has M&S tights in black They don’t seem to fall down. Dd6 has the grey M&S tights and they do fall down all the time.

RidingMyBike · 26/01/2022 10:18

M and S or the John Lewis ones worked well for us. The M and S we had to size up.

Bunnycat101 · 26/01/2022 10:44

Definitely size up. My tall skinnny 5yo is in size 7-8.

Floydthebarber · 26/01/2022 10:51

Yes, do size up if you're not already. Just turned 7 dd1 is wearing 9-10 tights to get them to stay up.
