I need a car that fits a large dog and a HUGE pushchair.

Currently I have a Fiat Panda 4x4.. which I love...small economical and goes through anything.
However I cannot fit my Grandson's pushchair and the dog in! Dog only goes in the boot (we have tried her in back of the car with a car harness.. she panics) and the pushchair is a huge Mountain Buggy Terrain..needed as we spend hours out in the fields but it doesn't fit in the boot and takes up the whole back of the car.(I'm doing baby care on my non work days)
My budget it 7k max..so not a lot. I'm wondering if an older Nissan Qashqai might do? Or possibly a Peugeot Partner (looks like a van but might be practical) or Dacia Duster?? a big old estate?..obviously older models but that doesn't matter. A lower boot sill for lugging the pram into would be good.
Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

It's not what you asked but since you love your current car and this is a temporary problem... any chance you can swap cars with baby's parent on the days you take them?

Boopeedoop · 24/01/2022 23:49

Look at something like a c max or zafira maybe?

StillMedusa · 24/01/2022 23:52

Theoretically..possibly but in reality it would not be practical because DD1 uses a small car for work and her DH carries a load of kit in his car and we need to do a fast hand over at the crack of dawn!

Could you get a smaller off road pushchair? We have a baby jogger summit (i think?) which has air filled tires etc like the terrain, but the tyres come off and the seat folds up so the actual space it takes up is really quite small. It could fit in a footwell.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 24/01/2022 23:54

We have a Skoda Octavia Estate and a travall boot system which divides the boot in two. One dog (lab) goes in one side of the boot and the pram, including a large bassinet, fits in the other side. Our pram is a nuna, I’m not sure of the dimensions of our pram versus the pram you’re using though. I think most restates have a flat boot, ours is removable should we need a deep boot but use the flat boot. With the travall boot system you can get a tailgate to put over the dog’s side so you don’t have to worry about them jumping out while setting up the pram.

LadyIckenham · 24/01/2022 23:56

I'd keep the car and buy and out n'about nipper. The wheels come off and you can fold it down flat.

JustWonderingIfYou · 25/01/2022 00:04

I think buy a smaller off roading pushchair. Dog and pushchair in the boot together would be a bit uncomfortable in even large cars. New pushchair is much cheaper than new car and it'll only be needed for such a short time.

toastfiend · 25/01/2022 00:05

I've got a Skoda Superb estate. Massive boot, fitted my two big dogs and huge pram comfortably when we still used the pram, nice to drive, really reliable and economical to run. It was about £12k a couple of years ago, but was pretty low mileage and not very old so I'd imagine you'd get a slightly older/higher mileage model within your budget but still with plenty of years and miles left in it!

Tbh, though, as others have said, I'd be much more inclined to go for a lightweight stroller type pram that folds down smaller than the one they have, rather than replacing your whole car. Prams are used for such a short amount of time - we've not used ours since DS was about 2 and a half, that it seems silly to trade in a car that you're otherwise happy with. Buying a brand new, smaller pram for your own use would be cheaper than a new car, and there's loads of good quality, relatively new prams to be found on FB marketplace etc. at a fraction of their RRP.

Honda Jazz with the magic rear seats ! I loved mine room for setter dog and a bike when the rear seats were up!

Pedallleur · 25/01/2022 11:30

Jazz is good. Skoda Superb excellent. the owner of the dealership has a few on Skoda

Crucible · 25/01/2022 11:32

Toyota auris touring sport. Excellent cars and should find one in your budget.

Seeline · 25/01/2022 11:34

If you go for a Qashqai, it would need to be a pre-2014 model. I've got a 2014 plate and hate it for a number of reasons, but one of them would be the lack of space in the rear and the useless boot space.

I don't know whether the older models were significantly different in this respect, but suspect that many of my other issues would be overcome.

SpringSpringTime · 25/01/2022 11:35

Skoda Octavia! I was sold on them via MN and a thread which mentioned you can transport spears in them Smile. We have the saloon version-slightly shorter overall length and more aerodynamic, but still absolutely massive boot. Love it, and it’s just as fuel efficient as our old Toyota Yaris.

LakeShoreD · 25/01/2022 11:35

There are smaller off road pushchairs and they are a hell of lot cheaper than buying a new car. If you’re otherwise happy with your car you’d be mad to do this. I’d look at the Out and About Nipper as a starting point.

itwasntaparty · 25/01/2022 12:57

Zafira. You'll get one in budget. Boot is huge. If ddog goes in a travel cage and isn't completely massive you can put him: her on one side of the boot, leave the 6th seat up for baby seat. You really don't want to be fancying about with taking wheels of and collapsing a buggy with a baby and dog to deal with.

We got one when I had twins, a bugaboo donkey and a dog. I won't go back now even though it's fugly.

Or, if you're not going to be in the fields get a smaller buggy for when you're looking after the baby...

itwasntaparty · 25/01/2022 12:58

Oh and the boot in the wash wait is disappointingly small, high up, and has a lip so a lot harder to lift into. The zafira is flat and lower and great for changing wet mucky kids (and dogs) in.

HelpMeWrite · 25/01/2022 13:02

Roof rack / box for the pushchair - the puschair is only a temp thing, unless you can foresee more grandchildren in the future!

toomuchlaundry · 25/01/2022 13:06

If you love your car I would go smaller pushchair, or would a baby backpack carrier type thing work?

I would think Skoda Superb is enormous compared to a Panda

DueyCheatemAndHow · 25/01/2022 13:10

Skoda Kodiaq if you want an SUV. Boot is cavernous

Muststopeating · 25/01/2022 13:15

I have a volvo v70 estate and LOVE it. Mine cost 3.5k 3.5 years ago. It has 185k miles on the clock and still going (though has had a few hose replacements lately). I think probably has one of the biggest boots going. Never done pram and dog but have had 2 massive german shepherds in the boot without a problem.

Have also heard very good things about Skodas.

AnnaBegins · 25/01/2022 13:22

How old is grandson? A baby carrier that packs up small to have him on your back might be easier - avoid the massive hiking ones as if you're out for hours you'll find them heavy as they throw off your centre of gravity, but if over 6 months old, a connecta or integra on your back would be super comfy (assuming you have no back issues!) and are about £30 second hand.

Santahasjoinedww · 25/01/2022 13:26

Would the buggy fit better of you took the wheels off?
I used to do this.
Wheels off into shower caps and replace.. Very easy. Ime.

hoorayandupsherises · 25/01/2022 13:27

I read the thread title and thought, well, both of those will fit in my Panda 4x4, but assuming they also want to carry the baby at the same time ...

My DH's car is a Duster and it's big inside, bigger than the Qashqai.

ArachnidArachnid · 25/01/2022 13:41

Can u fit the buggy in the front seat well?

Try an out n about nipper or a mini GT both still good outdoorsy buggies. Bike rack for buggy? (Yes we did this once when going camping!!)

pastypirate · 25/01/2022 19:22

Vw touran the boot is massive
