Anyone had an op recently and know if you have to isolate beforehand?

FIL has a knee replacement booked in February but hasn't been told if he needs to isolate or not.

I know it might be different rules for different hospitals but wondered if anyone knew if patients were expected to isolate at home pre op?

MIL had minor surgery a couple of months ago. She wasn’t told to isolate but on the day they asked her if she had. She confessed that she hadn’t so they bumped her to the end of the list and she was last to be seen that day. No idea of the logic here - maybe so nobody else was in theatre after her?? Worth double checking with the hospital.

I had a knee replacement middle of last year. I had to go for a drive through LFT, got negative next day, and then isolate for three days before op. Not sure about now...

He is due to be an inpatient for 2-3 days if that makes a difference. He has said he will contact the hospital but just wondered if anyone here knew as well.

Relative had surgery recently. He had to isolate between his pre-op assessment and the actual surgery date, which was about 5 days including a weekend.

No idea if all hospitals are the same but someone I know had to 2 weeks ago for an op last week. Is there a reason that the hospital isn't able to tell you?

ChristmasMouseInHouse · 24/01/2022 12:44

FIL has said that he will contact the hospital to ask but also wants to see family ahead of the op so we are trying to find out if that's a good idea/allowed

I had to isolate for the 3 days between my pre-op covid test and the operation.

Kingstonmumof1 · 24/01/2022 12:49

Regardless of hospital rules, with waiting lists as they are I wouldn't risk mixing before an op if it were me.

aquietlifeplease · 24/01/2022 12:50

I had surgery the week before last and didn't have to. I had a pcr test 2 days before op but was told to just carry on as normal until I went in!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 24/01/2022 12:50

I had to socially distance for 14 days and then do a PCR 3 days before and drop it off at the hospital and then the whole house needs to completely isolate.

Wiseowltaylor · 24/01/2022 12:50

I had to isolate for the 4 days between my pre-op covid test and the operation.

MrsTimRiggins · 24/01/2022 12:51

I had a caesarean a couple of months ago and didn’t need to isolate and my auntie had a kidney removed a few weeks ago and didn’t need to isolate either.

ChristmasMouseInHouse · 24/01/2022 12:51

Gosh it's quite varied then!

Mine was a knee replacement too.

smilefile · 24/01/2022 12:52

My DH had surgery 12 days ago & he had to S.I in between the PCR test and the due date of surgery.

He was told he would be contacted if it was positive and couldn't be operated on.

Hope this helps.

Scarby9 · 24/01/2022 12:54

Since October, of the people I know:

PCR and isolate 3 days for cancer op.

PCR and isolate 5 days for ankle op.

LFT and no isolation for hip op.

PCR and 3 days isolation for hip op.

Quite random.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/01/2022 12:55

Whatever the rules, he needs to remember that a positive test will mean his treatment is cancelled, and potentially a very long wait for it to be rescheduled. A friend was in this situation, also for his knee, tested positive for the scheduled surgery, and is now back on a three year waiting list.

Oh wow, I didn't realise he would go back to the bottom of the list!

I had a very minor op last Sunday and I was told to isolate from my drive through covid test until I left the house for the hospital.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/01/2022 13:03

I had to isolate for 3 days (after a PCR) in October.

My household was meant to isplate too, the others wouldn't have been paid so went to work as usual.

Footballschmootball · 24/01/2022 13:05

I’m having a GA in March and have to social distance for 10 days prior and isolate 3 days prior from PCR

FrogIAm · 24/01/2022 13:06

Completely varies, but personally I would arrange to see family and friends and then isolate completely for a week. Including anyone that lived with me. No point in isolating if someone I’m sharing a house with isn’t.
I’d do this purely as rates are currently so high to stop the risk of testing positive and having surgery cancelled. Also, no one wants to go through surgery and develop covid that day and possibly complicate and already complicated surgery.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 24/01/2022 13:07

DH had surgery in December, had PCR at the hospital three days (Sunday) before and had to isolate from the day before that (the Saturday)
I isolated with him.

Bunce1 · 24/01/2022 13:10

Drive through PCR 3 days before OP and S.I. waiting on the results. I was asked if I had done this when I was in the hospital and I had so I said yes. I wonder what they would have done if I had said no?!

I live in the South West.

mrsbyers · 24/01/2022 13:34

I had surgery on the 11th , had to isolate after drive through PCR within three days of operation
