Anyone had an op recently and know if you have to isolate beforehand?

FIL has a knee replacement booked in February but hasn't been told if he needs to isolate or not.

I know it might be different rules for different hospitals but wondered if anyone knew if patients were expected to isolate at home pre op?

A friend recently scheduled for an op for a dislocated and damaged artificial hip had to COVID test two days before, tested positive, and told new op couldnt go ahead until 7 weeks had passed. Not sure why

@thereisonlyoneofme
That’s because of this study which showed increased risk in patients diagnosed with pre-op covid which persisted for 7 weeks:

My DH has just had orthopaedic day case surgery under general anaesthetic. He was advised to isolate for a week to prevent cancellation but more importantly as they really didn’t recommend going under GA with CoViD in his system.

Was booked in for a PCR test last Friday and told to isolate until minor op today.

Brother in law came to fix boiler problem on Tuesday, had a positive lateral flow test on Thursday, so when I had the pre-op phone call from the hospital on Thursday, I was told that both my Covid test and op would have to be cancelled.
Gutted.

@thereisonlyoneofme it’s really because covid and surgery don’t mix. You don’t want breathing problems or left over clotting problems.

@GinghamChicken sorry your surgery was cancelled, I hope you get a new date soon. But they couldn’t risk you testing positive and getting super sick whilst recovering from surgery so it’s sadly understandable.

I'm having to have a pcr test and to isolate for 3 days for a steroid injection.

TopCatsTopHat · 25/01/2022 07:27

Op in November here and was required to isolate. I would anyway as wouldn't want to risk catching it and it jeopardising the procedure.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 25/01/2022 07:30

I isolated for 3 days from pre-op to operation day in November
(gallbladder)
Sister isolated for 10 days ahead of hip replacement in March last year.

FluffyBooBoo · 25/01/2022 07:34

My cousin is going for a knee op next month and has been told to isolate for ten days.

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 25/01/2022 07:58

I was meant to have surgery tomorrow, I was due to have my covid swab yesterday and then was meant to isolate until tomorrow. I only got told about the covid swab and isolating last week(although I expected it anyway.)
Been cancelled now though because I have covid again.

I had a PCR test last Monday and then had to self isolate until my procedure on the Thursday. Anyone in my household had to self isolate too or I had to stay away from them if that wasn't possible. However I am going for an MRI next Wednesday at the same hospital and I don't have a PCR or need to self isolate!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 25/01/2022 08:29

My dads having a double hernia op in a couple of weeks and has been asked to isolate for 3 days.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/01/2022 08:45

Relative of mine is booked in for surgery next week and needs to go for a PCR test 3 days before the op, and then isolate until the day of the op.

Like a PP says, it's not just to prevent you from bringing covid into the hospital, but to reduce the risk of testing positive and losing your slot, so it's probably worth being careful for a week or two prior to the pre-op PCR test.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/01/2022 08:53

No isolation and just a LFT for endometrial ablation on day surgery. In the event they did fibroid removal instead and had to keep me in so they did a pcr before moving me to a different ward.

ChristmasMouseInHouse · 25/01/2022 09:48

I'm amazed at how varied the guidance is!

So sorry to those who have had ops cancelled because of being contacts or getting COVID.

@Iluvfriends

I had to isolate for the 3 days between my pre-op covid test and the operation.
My DD had surgery in December and she had to do this.
MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 25/01/2022 12:05

I haven't been put to the bottom of the list so that must vary based on hospital, I just need to wait the 7 weeks advised.

IAmMyOwnWorstEnemy · 25/01/2022 12:40

My dh had a procedure In hospital in Dec. He had to do a covid test at the hospital drive through on the Sunday morning and then to isolate till his appointment on the Tues.
