Which yoghurt - why all fat-free?

A very boring thread I know and probably makes me sound an idiot, but hey.

I have just realised that pretty much all yoghurt is fat-free but quite high in sugar. This isn't what I want for my dc, who are 12 & 14 and very slim. What type do you get, preferably from Aldi/ Lidl? I do get the Greek one sometimes but don't always want the plain one.

We go for Greek yoghurt but never managed to get it in either Lidl or Aldi as I only ever see Greek-style there. You could add fruit or flavourings to it?

Caspianberg · 23/01/2022 21:25

Full fat Greek. Total if you can, most supermarkets do own brand full fat Greek as well

Just add honey, fruit, granola, seeds, chocolate, fruit purées etc for the times you don’t want plain.

madIam · 23/01/2022 21:27

Yes, we do add fruit etc but just wanted a change and easier option! Maybe it doesn't exist - odd!

This really passes me off.

Everyone needs fat, sugar causes people to be fat not fat.

We buy greek or Icelandic yoghurt and add fruit.

I am adding a yoghurt maker to my wants for this year

fitflopqueen · 23/01/2022 21:28

Aldi do full fat Greek yoghurt with 10% protein, also Greek style which is also full fat. Both are good, we get through a lot of this every week.

Lovemusic33 · 23/01/2022 21:29

I buy live yoghurt then add what I want to it.

I agree that most fat free yoghurts are very high in sugar.

Fatgalslim · 23/01/2022 21:30

Agree about aldi Greek yogurt, I like the fat free and full fat versions. One of the nicest imo

PriamFarrl · 23/01/2022 21:32

I only ever seem to buy full fat yogurt. Fat free tastes bad and sometimes isn’t vegetarian.

Oldraver · 23/01/2022 21:34

Do you have a nearby Asda ? They do a lovely Greek Youghurt

Theregoesmyhomebirth · 23/01/2022 21:37

Both Aldi and Lidl do full fat flavoured ones. There's still a whack of sugar in them but they're so much nicer than fat free.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 23/01/2022 21:39

I only buy full fat and really like Fage for Greek, it’s so thick you can practically stand the spoon in it. DH has bought the sainsburys and Lidl Greek yoghurt recently though and while it’s nowhere near as thick it’s still nice and I prefer it if I’m having it with granola. Fage is great on its own or with fruit

ReviewingTheSituation · 23/01/2022 21:43

Lidl has the BEST Greek yogurt (not Greek Style). They do a 0% version, but also a proper version which is so tasty - better than anything I've had from any other supermarket. Comes in enormous pots, and also big pots (and maybe small pots, but I don't ever look for/buy that size).

If you buy flavoured yogurt you're likely to be taking on a lot more sugar than you'd like. Just add your own flavourings. You could always get some frozen fruits and blitz them and stir in.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2022 21:43

I like the aldi layered yoghurt. Oykos is nice too

NannyR · 23/01/2022 21:46

They're not available in aldi/Lidl (but well worth going out to your way to source some!) but Longley Farm yoghurts are delicious. They are just full fat yoghurt, fruit and sugar. Asda and Morrison's sell them.

Haudyourwheesht · 23/01/2022 21:47

Aldis layered yoghurts are full fat I think. They're lovely.

bluechameleon · 23/01/2022 21:48

I buy Rachel's and Yeo Valley in Tesco. Both come in interesting flavours. I also like the Collective ones which are plain yoghurt with fruit puree.

toastofthetown · 23/01/2022 21:48

All flavoured yogurt will be high in sugar. I sometimes get the passionfruit yogurt from the Lidl Deluxe range - the dupe of the Collective yogurts. I think there are several other options too. The ones in the same shape tub as natural yogurt spring to mind, so why not just check out the nutrition on pack when you are in store. Do your teenagers not have a preference though?

KittenKong · 23/01/2022 21:57

You could make your own (dear god - yes I o own how that sounds!).

I have an electric pressure cooker that has a yoghurt setting - whisk up 1l of long life with 2 tablespoons of live yoghurt and pop or on for 10 hours. I strain mine to make Greek and it keeps in a jar for (supposedly) a week on the fridge. Then just add fresh fruit and nuts/seeds to taste.

Jellycatspyjamas · 23/01/2022 22:44

I buy these too rather than the low fat, high sugar ones which always taste a bit chemically to me. Or buy plain Greek yoghurt and add thawed frozen fruit.

DrNo007 · 23/01/2022 22:46

Organic full fat plain unflavoured yoghurt. Yeo valley or Rachel’s. Add your own fruit. Simple!

OverByYer · 23/01/2022 22:48

Greek or Yeo Valley. I never buy low fat anything as it’s all full of sugar

ISpyCobraKai · 23/01/2022 22:58

The Collective do lovely big tubs of full fat yoghurt with no artificial sweeteners.
I always buy that if I want flavoured, otherwise Lancashire Farm plain full fat

sleaf · 23/01/2022 23:01

Aldi and Lidl both have full fat Greek style yoghurts in Lemon, Salted Caramel, Honey and Coconut flavours - and they are obscenely DELICIOUS.

Thesearmsofmine · 23/01/2022 23:08

I buy Longley Farm for my tween dc or if I’m buying plain I get a big tub of Lancashire Farm bio yogurt. I hate that so many yogurts are low fat, it really annoys me.

Christmasqueenx · 23/01/2022 23:19

Fage is the best. Full of protein. Add fruit or honey - delicious!
