Ok, mine is, Why is it so common for Americans to be known and raised by their middle names? Eg, their parents put Alexandra Nicole on their BC but they are always called Nicole and have been from birth.

Any Americans who can explain this to me?

Any questions others have?

I used to get cross about how many people lived at the Barlow's in Coronation Street. Ken and Deirdrie, Blanche, Tracy, Peter and Adam and Amy...where did they all sleep?

If food groups go by colour, would red pepper and green pepper count as one of your five a day or two?

My dad goes by his middle name and it's because he was given the same first name as his father so it was a way of avoiding confusion at home. I feel like Americans often do this, especially in rich families (hence there was a John Paul Getty III) so perhaps it's more about practicalities than religion.

How can a sex (a label for which kind of body you have) match a gender (a label describing how someone feels, often interpreted as how masculine/feminine they feel)?

Would we describe our eye colour as "matching" our sexual orientation?

(or 'aligning with' or 'corresponding with' or any other term that assumes one is inherently linked to the other)

@AdaColeman

It is a snorkel, it provides cool dry clean air to the engine and prevents water and dirt getting into the engine, especially when off road.

I have learned something new, thank you. Smile

Many, many of my relatives were named after a relation but were known by their middle name. I don’t think it’s an American thing.

That’s a very good question. You’re not comparing like with like.

Why is it, when I’ve got the heater blowing hot air in my car, that when I go round a corner it blows cold until I straighten up again ?

Can fishes drown?

I believe some sharks can if they don’t keep moving.

So fake tan booths that automatically spray you are a thing, why don’t we have them but for suncream at beaches?

Why do we never hear from well known psychic mediums after they die ??
Never heard a peep from Doris Stokes or Derek Acorah after their passing......surely that should be the first thing they'd do after entering the spirit world ??

Thanks @Warmduscher I do sometimes think I'm going crazy when I ask it as no-one ever attempts a reply! Yet this concept of 'matching' underpins so much in the NHS definitions, Stonewall definitions, what schools teach about gender, what informs policies and actual law etc.

How do you lose weight. I don't mean 'eat less and move more'. I mean how is weight lost from a body.

Do you breathe it out? Sweat it out? Pee it out? How does the physiology (?) of it actually work?

This intrigued me loads, so I researched. Here you go!

The correct answer is that fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. You exhale the carbon dioxide and the water mixes into your circulation until it's lost as urine or sweat. If you lose 10 pounds of fat, precisely 8.4 pounds comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6 pounds turns into water.

I've always been fascinated by calculators. And the chicken and egg conundrum!! I could spend many ( pointless) hours pondering that one.

If Heaven is for people, then I think we'd have to accept that other higher order mammals such as apes and dogs will find their way in too.

What about lower order animals such as hamsters?

What about those really low down on the food chain? Chickens? Sardines? Snails? Insects?

Time for a catchy song!

It's a pleasure.
I loved our snorkel when we had a LR, it improves fuel efficiency and increases engine power.

  • My uncle went by his middle name because he was born in the middle of the war and the names they wanted would have given him the initials JAP.

A lot of instances appear to be about honouring a relative (or in RC's case a saint) but with the implicit expectation that it's only Real if it's the first one Grin. Nowadays people are much more likely to do such an honouring as a middle name.

  • I think animals that have souls would go to heaven (on an individual basis, rather than just "the idea of hamster"). I also think that as mind is an emergent property of a sufficiently-complex brain, then soul is an emergent property of sufficiently-complex mind; so chimps dolphins and elephants have them, cats almost certainly, dogs and monkeys probably, goats maybe, sheep probably not.

-This might also have something to do with there being no ghosts of dinosaurs.

Hm, you get dog ghosts, don't you? Dogs probably do have souls then. Horse ghosts tend to be ridden ones, so that's slightly different.

(I also think that maybe Divinity is an emergent property of a sufficiently-complex soul aggregation... which I freely admit is a fancy way of saying God exists and we made him up Grin)

There is a Pigeon ghost in the sutcom Ghosts.

My grandfather went by his middle name as he shared a first name with his father.

What's the pipe but for next to the windscreen on land rovers

I know, I know!
It's called a snorkel.

Normal cars take in air for the engine from the grill areas at the front of the car, usually just above the number plate.

Landrovers (like the defender) are designed to go properly off-road, and the snorkel is an adjustment that means the engine takes air from high up, and is protected from water, mud and gunk that would ruin the engine if air was sucked in from the usual spot.
