Would you go to Mexico 6 months pregnant?

Justmalma · 22/01/2022 15:28

There isn't a current outbreak of Zika virus so it isn't a red zone, Mexico has had 48 confirmed cases between 2015-2019.

Would you go? All inclusive hotel on Caribbean coast. Has got a buffet but has 10 restaurants where food is cooked fresh for you, can have a la carte breakfast too, so I would avoid the buffet, wouldn't drink tap water and would brush teeth with bottled. Same as I would if I wasn't pregnant really..

Is it idiotic that I'm thinking it would be fine?

This summer?

Justmalma · 22/01/2022 15:30

April

Nope. I would be wary of becoming ill out there and the airline not allowing you fly. Also would you be covered by travel insurance. How many months is the cut off for flying?

You can't fly in your third trimester can you? Or has it changed since mine were born? I think I'd be more worried about the long haul flight tbh OP. Mexico is beautiful tho, and absolutely fine if you're pregnant. As I say, I think the flight would be more to worry about

Justmalma · 22/01/2022 15:35

Cut off for flying is 36 weeks, fit note from doctor needed after 32 I believe, so covered there. We've had a look and it's not really any more expensive to insure me before those dates, I'll be around 24 weeks so pregnancy is covered in most standard policies still. Would take out comprehensive cancellation insurance too just Incase I didn't feel up to it. I really want one last luxury holiday Blush

Yes would be fine

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/01/2022 15:37

I wouldn't in case baby was born early and I got stuck there for months.

NoSquirrels · 22/01/2022 15:38

Personally that would be outside of my comfort zone on flight time whilst pregnant. I’d look for somewhere closer. But we all make our own risk assessments.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/01/2022 15:40

I found the hour flight at that stage pretty uncomfortable. Long Hull would have been very unpleasant.

Whats the Covid situation like now?

Justmalma · 22/01/2022 15:41

I don't really want to fly later than April, I'll be coming to the end of my second trimester as I return to the UK if we go on the dates I have in mind and I feel comfortable that there's a low risk of baby coming that early.

Third trimester I don't want to travel, so I'm limited to April and nowhere much closer is very warm that early. First world problem I know.

Covid wise it's easy enough to travel there at the moment, we're all jabbed, boosted and have had OG covid and Omicron so I think I'm quite immune at this point (hopefully!)

Would Egypt be safer? Suspiciously cheap 5* luxury resorts coming up for a third of the price I was looking at for Mexico!

GoodnightGrandma · 22/01/2022 15:54

No.

greenlynx · 22/01/2022 16:00

I wouldn’t go so far. I think at 6 months there is a good possibility of baby coming earlier.

NotVictorianHonestly · 22/01/2022 16:04

I wouldn't do that long a flight in economy that far along. I'd do it in business and go to Mexico quite happily though. At a similar gestation I did a long haul in business and it was fine, on the same trip I did a 2 hour internal flight in economy and was ridiculously uncomfortable. I had a very easy pregnancy and am very fit so it really surprised me.

NotVictorianHonestly · 22/01/2022 16:05

Oh and do take out specialist insurance. Standard insurance would cover you for the coats of an early delivery, but not the private medical care a preemie would need or the cost of you staying out there for a prolonged period. Or at least that was the case when I looked into it.

MooChops89 · 22/01/2022 16:08

I went at 25 weeks in Jan 2018, Zika was a bit more prevalent at the time but after researching I concluded the risk was minimal. I found the flight very uncomfortable (but I get restless when travelling even when not pregnant!) and started getting Braxton Hicks while we were out there which panicked me a bit but other than that it was bliss to get away, it's my fave place in the world!

The resort you're looking at sounds very much like ours - Grand Sirenis?

paname · 22/01/2022 16:09

Insurance won't magically make a properly kitted out and staffed NICU appear. I really wouldn't go. It also doesn't diminish the risk of awful food poisoning and the baby being damaged or coming early because of it. Florida?

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/01/2022 16:25

I probably would.. Grin

But have a dig into medical care, any decent hospital will be v expensive so you will need to really check insurance.

stripeymonster · 22/01/2022 16:33

No - not with the crime rate at the moment. Many other beautiful places to go without the risk.

Shadappayourface · 22/01/2022 16:38

Yes I would go. I think a lot of the PP's on here are being a bit dramatic tbh. Lots of people go on holiday at 6months. My biggest concern would be covid affecting your holiday but as you've recently had it then I don't think that's too much of a concern. The only other concern would be comfortability on the flight too. So it would be a question as to whether you can handle the heat and flight at 6 months.

pitterpatterrain · 22/01/2022 16:43

True NotVictorian my long haul travel when pregnant was business as well for work, including Mexico and a couple of others

Also get the special pressure socks / tights it can make it a bit more comfortable

Yup to checking insurance - at the time my work insured up to 30-32 weeks so I was travelling until that cut-off various places

winterowl · 22/01/2022 16:51

I went before having DS1 so just over five years ago. I was 17 weeks on arrival and we stayed in cancun for ten days.

I was pretty miserable not being able to drink at all - not a problem at home but on holiday going out every night for dinner it was different. I also couldn't spend all day in the sun as it affected me more - you need to be more careful about hydration and you can burn more easily. I was unable to eat at several of the restaurants - there was a sushi bar for example so it felt like I didn't get the best of our all inclusive deal!

Oh, and it didn't happen on that flight but I was also travelling a lot for work at that point and I kept getting nosebleeds. That was gross on a plane.

It was lovely to be away, see some sights and spend time with my husband but I'm not sure it was the best use of money.

Personally I wouldn't have been going there later in my pregnancy - I did go to Venice and Paris before stopping flying at 28 weeks which was when you needed a letter then.

TheVanguardSix · 22/01/2022 16:58

No way. Gringo stomach will get you, aka Montezuma's revenge. It's sooo not worth the risk.
You have to constantly remember to brush your teeth with bottled water, shower with your mouth firmly closed, don't eat the grapes, the salad (which has been washed in local water).
I grew up in Southern California and went back and forth to Mexico all the time. I love Mexico. But I wouldn't go there when pregnant. Zika virus is still a thing.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 22/01/2022 17:03

No. And nothing to do with any virus. If something happens you would be stuck there. If the baby come early are u happy with being in hospital out there for weeks. Not a chance I would I would just somewhere in this country. Not a hardship
