Would you go to Mexico 6 months pregnant?

There isn't a current outbreak of Zika virus so it isn't a red zone, Mexico has had 48 confirmed cases between 2015-2019.

Would you go? All inclusive hotel on Caribbean coast. Has got a buffet but has 10 restaurants where food is cooked fresh for you, can have a la carte breakfast too, so I would avoid the buffet, wouldn't drink tap water and would brush teeth with bottled. Same as I would if I wasn't pregnant really..

Is it idiotic that I'm thinking it would be fine?

I would go. I have travelled to places like Jamacia, Dominic Republic not whilst pregnant but when DS was 18 months.

If you haven't booked your package with someone like TUI who offer COVID protection I would be very worried about that more than anything.

I am fairly relaxed and considered this for babymoon at 26 weeks in November and decided against it for various reasons.

  • Unknown/unexpected medical issues
  • Gringos stomach
  • flight time

We went to tenerife instead, the resort was incredible.

If i got a really good deal I'd consider Mexico but I'd be taking a lot of tracker and protein bars.

I wouldn't be going to Mexico full stop. I've been several times, last trip about 10yrs ago. But the drug cartel is getting out of hand. I've read too many reports of holidaymakers scrambling for cover from gunfights.

Could you do Morocco? A luxury riad might be really nice!

I love Mexico (mostly) as I live in Canada, but I would be cautious right now. Two Canadians were shot and killed near Playa del Carmen this week, at the Xcaret resort, somewhere I have thought of going.

Very sad. The Mexican gangs seem to have shifted focus to that coast.

Also, being 6 months pregnant is a risk. I have got the stomach thing only once in many trips from eating in a small restaurant, but the risk is there. Resorts are usually safe, even salads, but still.

I’ve been to Mexico many times in the past decade to five star all inclusives before I had children and personally I wouldn’t go!

We stopped going a few months before TTC as although the risk of zika is low, it is still there and any unnecessary risk was too much for me when it came to my child.

Also, for me I wouldn’t be able to justify the cost on the things I would t be able to have. Our favourite and well frequented hotel had 11 a la carte restaurants but most of my favourite meals would have been out of the questions when pregnant. I also made the most of the cocktails, champagne and wine menus which again is reflected in the price and I would feel cheated!!
Thinking back to when I was pregnant in summer 2020 in England, I would have felt very uncomfortable in Mexico heat but that’s just me!

Exactly my thoughts! This is the part of Mexico I've been to several times. I've even read of dead bodies washing up ashore in Cancun - all part of the drug cartel. I'd literally avoid at all costs!

No, we thought about it but chose a European county 3hs flight in a country which is not on the food poisoning top list. Where I can eat salad and go out for dinner without worrying no more than UK. 3 he is going to be enough for myself on a plane. It could be fine heading some where else but if I got food posining somewhere hot it would be a horrible week for sure.

MissingGrandstand · 22/01/2022 17:36

This is going to be a supremely unhelpful response but I think it depends on your personal risk tolerance - I say this because I know my risk tolerance was totally irrational. I turned down a 2nd trimester ultra luxury holiday (a fact I will remind this baby of every time they put a toe out of line Grin) because I was worried about Zika, and also knew the second I was bitten I would spend the rest of the holiday in pieces. That being said, I’ve happily enjoyed medium rare steak and a glass of Prosecco twice while pregnant with zero guilt or stress - for whatever irrational reason those felt less risky to me, so for me it would be all about how your brain would process it!

Latteandcappuccino · 22/01/2022 17:40

I did my last long haul flight at 4 months (back to home country, 10 hrs flight) and a short haul at 35 weeks. I was pretty uncomfortable so that's worth considering?

I've travelled to Mexico in a pre- motherhood life and loved it, but I went travelling around.

Latteandcappuccino · 22/01/2022 17:43
  • uncomfortable in the seat I meant with a bump and the seatbelt and tray table (reclining passenger in front)
gardenline · 22/01/2022 18:12

I went to the US recently at 21 weeks. Flying was fine, I quite enjoyed watching movies back to back. We had to do a night flight on the way back which was horrible, but to be honest I never manage to sleep on a flight, if it had been a day time flight I'd have been fine. I'm 28 weeks now and a bit more uncomfortable but I don't think a long haul flight now would be much worse than it was.

I'd probably prefer to fly before 25 weeks though if I was planning it, just because I'd worry about trying to sort out reliable healthcare overseas later in the pregnancy. And we went flew long haul to visit family - if it was just to enjoy a holiday I'm sure I could find somewhere with a shorter flight (and with a more Western lifestyle/politics).

boymum88 · 22/01/2022 18:41

Nope would never travel preg again, but I was one of the unlucky ones who had a baby at 28 weeks while on holiday, we was lucky in one way at it had a great health care system but months in a foreign county with a baby in the nicu is no fun. Then all the while dealing with a holes from insurance.

If you do go make sure you have good cover that pays for private hospitals, know where the hospital is if needed.

lapasion · 22/01/2022 18:48

I wouldn’t fancy it right now. I’m usually ok with travel to slightly risky areas, especially if it’ll mostly be in a hotel. But even the resorts have had shootings. I would probably avoid Egypt too.

That aside, the flight would also be a bit of a nightmare. I did a 4.5 hour flight at just under six months without too much discomfort but I would not like to do more than that. My bum was numb and I had a bad back the next day.

SandyPanda · 22/01/2022 18:57

I love Mexico but no. That whole coastline is really struggling with covid and I wouldn't want to get caught up in it when pregnant.

squishyegg · 22/01/2022 19:00

Nope. But then I had my son spontaneously at 28 weeks and then my daughter spontaneously at 34 weeks.

We went to Mexico in early December and the flight is longggg so bare that in mind
