Feeling really sad about Meat Loaf dying

Don't really know why. I am 50 and he's kind of always just been there. Bat Out Of Hell straddled the album charts and public consciousness for years when I was growing up. I didn't feel a personal connection to what he was doing at the time very much but whenever one of his songs comes on the radio I'm there, word perfect and shouting along. It's like he's in my apprehension and I feel sad he's gone.

A colleague of mine was friends with him, he was very upset today - apparently Meat Loaf was a lovely, quiet and unassuming type off-stage.

Santahasjoinedww · 21/01/2022 20:24

I am 50 too op!! One of my most listened to albums in my teens..
And luckily my dc are happy to have it on - especially ds 20.

Karenetta · 21/01/2022 20:29

@Crimesean that's interesting. He always struck me as being v focused on his music. This makes me think he's one of the good guys, you know? Working his a** off to get his music out there, and always seemed to be undaunted by the fact that no one else was doing what he did, that he wasn't cool or trendy. He was just Meat Loaf and he knew it.

I’m 50 too op, and I feel exactly the same. It’s terribly sad, I can quite believe he was a quiet unassuming man in real life.

I can’t imagine any of today’s music acts making an impact like he did.

LightSpeeds · 21/01/2022 20:31

Me too... I love the song 'Dead Ringer For Love' and loved him and Little Nell in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There was just 'something' about him and I was really upset today when I heard he'd died.

StarsAreWishes · 21/01/2022 20:31

I started feeling like this when Bowie died.

I remember when my parents were in their 50s they commented how upsetting it was that all the “stars of their youth” were dying, and now I know what they meant.

Shapiro · 21/01/2022 20:35

Many celebrities are larger than life and we often only remember them at a certain period of time in their life, often when they are quite young, so years later when they die we still have that image that we’ve held of them all these years of when they were younger so it kind of becomes a shock to us when they die.

It’s also a reminder of our own immortality.

As someone into rock and metal, I feel like my favourite stars have been dying one after the other since my youth. I can remember being heartbroken as a teenager on learning Steve Clark from Def Leppard had passed away.

I feel very sad too. It is like a horrible sinking feeling in my stomach.

I am really starting to feel old with deaths like Meat Loaf's. Also so much ageism right now.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 21/01/2022 20:58

Similar age here. I think I listened to meatloaf a lot as an angsty , drama queen teen and the music stirs up a little part of me that’s still in there somewhere. I’ve forgotten who I used to be and I miss me. See! Angsty!

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 21/01/2022 20:59

🎶it’s all coming back to me 🎶

(Literally)

Evenstar · 21/01/2022 21:06

You are definitely not alone, it’s hit me hard today as he was one of my first husband’s favourite musicians, my husband died in 2008 and hearing the music today has brought back memories of it playing in the car when we were first together. Like PP Bowie is another that I miss dreadfully.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/01/2022 21:09

Me too. I’m 58, he’s just always been there. Seems weird that he’s gone.

Aderyn21 · 21/01/2022 21:10

Me too. The world is a poorer place because of it!

BoofTheFloof · 21/01/2022 21:11

I was really sad. Even sadder when I realised he was anti vax, anti mask mandates etc (despite being large, over 70 and with asthma ) and died of covid. What a waste.

Violetroselily · 21/01/2022 21:12

You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth is one of my favourite songs. I will be listening a lot and warbling along this weekend.

awishes · 21/01/2022 21:13

Me too. 57 and I shouted no" at the radio when I heard, then shed a tear.

Yubaba · 21/01/2022 21:13

He was the first singer I ever saw live as a 14 year old music lover.
I’ve been blasting him out all day at work today, I’ve been quite sad that a little bit of my childhood is gone.

Same. Feels worse that there's a good chance he'd still be here if he been vaccinated.

*had

RiderGirl · 21/01/2022 21:22

I'm in my late 30s and the first music I ever had was a Meat Loaf cassette in my stocking in the early 90s, I've always had a secret soft spot. I feel as sad as I did when Bowie died, RIP.

Same here! Such a shame.

Oh no! Is that true? Gutted!
CheeseMmmm · 21/01/2022 21:28

It's funny yes I feel a bit sad too.

I'm nearly 50 and never heard albums, want my style music and hated anything for love.

HOWEVER rocky horror and he was brilliant fight club.

So anyway I'm surprised how I feel as didn't think was particularly.. Attached or fan or whatever.

I even said to DH he was a total one off. He not fan art all and when he saw he said oh no meat loaf has died.

Funny isn't it.

Understand why many would be v sad x

feellikeanalien · 21/01/2022 21:28

He was very much part of my teenage years. It just seems that one more good thing has gone from the world.

I actually shed a few tears listening to it on the car radio this morning.

I think it makes me realise that despite what I feel mentally I am getting older and there are so many things that have changed and mostly not for the better.
