What’s something from your childhood you wish was still around for your kids?

I saw a similar post and it took me on a trip down memory lane.

What childhood experience/game/food/place do you wish was still a thing?

Toys in cereals is one thing for me. They’ve apparently been banned because they were considered to be potential choking hazard

Playing out in the street but knowing if you misbehaved your Mum would know about it before you even got home.

liliainterfrutices · 20/01/2022 23:12

BBC Sunday serials of classic books

whymewhyme · 20/01/2022 23:13

Danikm151 · 20/01/2022 23:14

Healthcare that was easy to get an appointment for!

Affordable family days out

Actual penny pick and mixes. If you had 20p you hit the jackpot- 50p winner for life!

ikeepseeingit · 20/01/2022 23:20

Reliable healthcare and libraries that I didn’t have to go two towns over for, that were open more than three half days a week.

StoatMilk · 20/01/2022 23:27

My lovely Mum

mogkat · 20/01/2022 23:28

I loved toys in cereal Grin

I used to like chatting for hours on the landline to my friends after school.

I miss recording and listening to the music charts on a Sunday.

McDonald's birthday parties - they were great when I was a kid and I was telling my son about them and how they just don't exist anymore!

itssixohthree · 21/01/2022 00:06

A Labour government. The 90s in general. Definitely McDonalds birthday parties. Grin

@StoatMilk I’m sorry for your loss Flowers

SmokeAndBone · 21/01/2022 00:08

@StoatMilk

My lovely Mum
Me too. My Dad. He'd have been a lovely Grandpa.
Calendulaaaaa · 21/01/2022 00:12

Europe. The nhs. Social support. Relatively clean air and water.

Talipesmum · 21/01/2022 00:12

Flower fairy dolls

Being able to play out down the road because there weren’t so many cars (I’m sure this is possible in some places, but my old road is now bumper to bumper and it never used to be. Not a moan as such, as we have two cars so can’t complain about it, but it changes the feel)

A feeling that things were getting better!

And def agree with the Sunday evening tv children’s classics.

Booklover3 · 21/01/2022 00:19

I miss Toys R us… but how it used to be when you could test everything and pick and mix from Woolworths.

SantasChestnuts · 21/01/2022 11:21

Toy shops on the high street.

Family GP.

Spinneys (lots got build on)

My wonderful grandparents who raised me and my siblings and would've adored my children.

MazzleDazzle · 21/01/2022 11:23

Youth Clubs, Play-schemes and school trips.

Wish my Dad was here for them too.

GoodnightGrandma · 21/01/2022 11:26

The playgrounds of the 70’s.
The ‘horse’ and the roundabouts.

Catnuzzle · 21/01/2022 11:28

My parents and my brothers Confused
My brothers died before or just after I had my DD1 and so have never had them in their life. Both my parents have died in the last 7 years and they are missed terribly by both DD's (and myself). It would have been so nice to have had my childhood family around, throughout my DD's childhood.
Sorry to be so depressing Sad but I'm really feeling low about this today. Sorry again

itwasntaparty · 21/01/2022 11:37

Wimpy:)

CatrinVennastin · 21/01/2022 11:39

Playing out and going to woolies with my Gran.

Also going to a really relaxed primary school. If the weather was good we got sent out to play! We did lots of art projects and music assemblies.

Hasn’t had any effect on my long term prospects! It was just a big standard state school too.

Freedom.

I played out in the street at 5 or 6 and walked to school solo.
At 8+ I went on long bike rides with friends, made dens in the woods, went to the park solo, walked to school solo.

I can't imagine letting my kid do any of that until he is 10/11 or so.

RestingStitchFace · 21/01/2022 13:10

@itwasntaparty

OMG yes. Wimpy was the BEST!

35andThriving · 21/01/2022 13:15

Parties in McDonald's and Pizza Hut.

They used to take the birthday child plus a friend off to make a pizza in Pizza Hut, plus do party games with all the kids. It was take stress out of organising a party. Smile

Passanotherjaffacake · 21/01/2022 13:17

Pound puppies, especially the one that gives birth to pups. My DD would love it! They are so expensive on eBay.

Not sure if DDad, were he still with us, would have loved being a grandad! Think he would have found my DD a bit loud Grin
