What’s something from your childhood you wish was still around for your kids?

I saw a similar post and it took me on a trip down memory lane.

What childhood experience/game/food/place do you wish was still a thing?

Toys in cereals is one thing for me. They’ve apparently been banned because they were considered to be potential choking hazard

The huge accumulated lore of rhymes, songs, skipping and clapping games, including rude rhymes and sayings etc. It seems to have evaporated. Sad

  • It would take the stress out of organising a party. I am trying to organise ds' birthday party now, and really wish it was an option.

I see mogkat remembers them fondly too .Smile

I see

I just wish phones didn't exist and they had to amuse themselves and find shit to do when they are bored

Yes ! Loved them.

Cheap comics that were actually good like Twinkle and Bunty instead of today’s expensive kids’ magazines with “free” gifts with every issue.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/01/2022 14:25

The Disney shop used to have a mountain of soft toys we used to play in-
That and the ice cream machine at Pizza Hut- epic!

Sunday afternoon family serials
Bank Holiday big films
Going out to play after school
Riding bikes for hours playing games
My Saturday morning trip to the library to change our books with DM then curling up to wade through them.
Children's TV on lunchtimes and then afternoon after school
Grange Hill
DGF yelling at the TV during the wrestling
Football scores at 5.15 Saturday afternoon.
I'm feeling rather nostalgic..

Woolworths and playing down the cul- de -sac with all the other local kids without fear of being abducted or shouted at by irate neighbours.

MrsPear · 21/01/2022 20:21

Life without social media.

Being able to play out - ds is 12 and can’t find anyone to go cinema with in the afternoon. Apparently I need to come too. Why?! One child even repeated that his parents thought I was irresponsible for allowing ds to go out on his own.

My grand parents.

Freedom.

I LOVED the toys in cereal boxes!
Also loved a MC Donalds party.
Penny sweets.
Buying CDs.

@Passanotherjaffacake

Pound puppies, especially the one that gives birth to pups. My DD would love it! They are so expensive on eBay.

Not sure if DDad, were he still with us, would have loved being a grandad! Think he would have found my DD a bit loud Grin

Pound puppies are still around! You can find them on Amazon for around 20 quid

I’m sorry for your loss xx

Yesss! I remember my favorite children magazine came with live jumping beans once and instructions on how to take care of them.

Another monthly magazine came with educational computer video games.

So good

They are just daft. Nothing wrong with letting a 12-year-old go to town. They’re almost teenagers…

I thought McDonald’s parties were still a thing! I remember my friend being teased for having her 15th or 16th birthday at McDonald’s.
I must be getting old lol

It sort of is still around, as it is on youtube - "Come Back Lucy" - based on the book - I just loved it and my dc would too - in fact, i really do think that a lot of the books popular at that time were better than what is churned out nowadays by teams of writers. Helen Cresswell wrote a similar time travel type thing.

Also being able to collect milk bottles and exchange them for sweets at the local newsagent.

And adventure playgrounds - all shut down now!

usinon · 21/01/2022 21:16

And Tammy and Jinty and the ghosty one can't remember name. And equivalent ones for boys.

mrkramps · 21/01/2022 21:24

Toys R us, the best place ever,

Nintendo DS and other handheld consoles for kids, they were a lot of fun playing against friends. Now it's all TikTok and stuff

aweebitlost · 21/01/2022 21:32

I agree with lots on here - toys in cereal; penny sweets; recording the Top 40; parents.

I was thinking earlier that I miss postcards. I used to love getting home from holiday and sorting everyone's post into piles - it was the only time of the year (besides our birthdays) when my brother and I would get enough post to make this a worthwhile enterprise!

Someone mentioned a trip to the library then curling up with their Mum to read the haul - I do that with my youngest DC most weeks, I didn't realise there were so few libraries in other places nowadays. We are very lucky and have access to several. We also have a couple of great adventure playgrounds nearby so I don't think they're a thing entirely of the past either! On the whole I think my kids don't have a totally dissimilar upbringing from mine but I've probably curated that rather than it coming naturally.

yeowemetwelvepegs · 21/01/2022 21:34

My grandmother. She knitted toys and clothes as if her life depended upon it. She only bought out of date yogurts and cheese, made pizza with ketchup as sauce and was basically the best thing since sliced bread.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 21/01/2022 21:36

My Nan. She was wonderful.
