Child has fever but not even ill??

Ds has had a fever all night, roasting hot, temp went to 38.9, all while he was sleeping, he was restless in his sleep, fidgeting etc but the kid is not ill. Not one bit. His temp is now 38.3. I'll Covid test him in abit but if that's coming back negative should I still send him in to school? He's fine in himself otherwise, so confused

Not sure what you mean by 'not ill'. Having a temp of 38.9 and disturbed sleep indicates a fever, which normally means the body is fighting off something.

How old is DS? How does he feel? If he eats breakfast and drinks some fluids, and says he feels ok, I'd send him in.

But no appetite, or he's complaining of feeling poorly, I'd keep him at home.

Sounds like an illness is on the way

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 05:59

Sorry, I mean no symptoms of anything.
One thing he complained of last night was stomach ache but other than that, no headache, ear aches, muscle aches etc

Child is ill. Regardless of not having specific symptoms (and clearly v stoic), he will not be feeling well or able to participate properly in school. He is also almost certainly infectious.

Clearly he must not go to school.

anotherbrewplease · 20/01/2022 06:05

He had stomach ache last night and a temperature of over 38 all night -

No - I would not send him to school.

Confused
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/01/2022 06:07

He needs a PCR not a home LFT.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/01/2022 06:10

DS only had a fever when he had Covid, no other symptoms.

Theyellowflamingo · 20/01/2022 06:10

How is fever and stomach ache “not ill” and “no symptoms”?! What kind of dramatic symptom are you looking for?

Rule at every nursery and school I know, even before covid, is if your child has a temperature they stay at home. They don’t get a temperature that high for no reason.

Besides, he is symptomatic of covid so you need to get a pcr (not a home lateral flow) and wait for the results.

A fever is a symptom of COVID.

He needs a PCR and to isolate until the results.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 06:13

I thought he was putting the stomach ache on ! Yes might not make me sound mother of the year but he has form.
As I've said other than that he's seemed fine in himself hence me questioning it.
I'm keeping him off and will get a pcr.
A spot has appeared on his tummy that I've noticed now

MintJulia · 20/01/2022 06:19

A spot? There's a lot of chickenpox circulating near us. I'd keep him at home. By the weekend you'll know for sure.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 06:40

Yes just one spot. Is that how chickenpox starts ?

OP posts:
TheReluctantPhoenix · 20/01/2022 06:42

Yes

Idontlikeworms · 20/01/2022 06:46

Is the spot like a blister? How old is he?

OopsadayZ · 20/01/2022 06:47

Or could be hand, foot and mouth. That starts with a fever and spots can appear on the body. It's very contagious (as is chickenpox) so don't send him to school today until you find out why he had a fever.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 06:50

This is it.
He had hand foot and mouth as a toddler and that appeared rapidly

OP posts:
tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 06:52

Sorry he's 7

AlexaShutUp · 20/01/2022 06:53

As others have said, a fever is a symptom. I wouldn't send him to school in that state.

Idontlikeworms · 20/01/2022 06:54

If he hasn't had pox I'd keep an eye out for more spots. Just give him paracetamol until you know and not ibuprofen.

2anddone · 20/01/2022 06:55

He has a raised temperature it's a symptom of covid get him a pcr and stay at home until the results are back. Hope he is better soon

OopsadayZ · 20/01/2022 06:57

Has he had chickenpox before?

Thunderface · 20/01/2022 06:57

When she was that age my dd often complained of a tummy ache when brewing tonsilitis. Did you check his throat?

RenGreen · 20/01/2022 06:58

I would say he’s ill OP. Even if he has ‘form’ he actually has symptoms of an illness a temperature, not sleeping well, stomach ache and then a spot. Think as PP said that’s more than enough to keep him off. Especially the temperature, that would indicate he is fighting an infection. Hope he gets better soon.

OopsadayZ · 20/01/2022 06:58

If you Google "start of chickenpox" the first results says this:

Chickenpox often starts without the classic rash, with a fever, headache, sore throat, or stomachache. These symptoms may last for a few days, with the fever in the 101°–102°F (38.3°–38.8°C) range. The red, itchy skin rash usually starts on the belly or back and face.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 06:59

No he hasn't had it before, I was only thinking the other day that I can't believe he hasn't had it yet.
I will check his throat, it's hard to do much with him because of his sensory needs
