Child has fever but not even ill??

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 05:50

Ds has had a fever all night, roasting hot, temp went to 38.9, all while he was sleeping, he was restless in his sleep, fidgeting etc but the kid is not ill. Not one bit. His temp is now 38.3. I'll Covid test him in abit but if that's coming back negative should I still send him in to school? He's fine in himself otherwise, so confused

@OopsadayZ

If you Google "start of chickenpox" the first results says this:

Chickenpox often starts without the classic rash, with a fever, headache, sore throat, or stomachache. These symptoms may last for a few days, with the fever in the 101°–102°F (38.3°–38.8°C) range. The red, itchy skin rash usually starts on the belly or back and face.

It does sound like it doesn't it going by that

God I feel bad now assuming he was putting it on 🙁

If he’s 7 and has a temperature, you need a PCR before you send him int to school. Fairly obvious.

Nidan2Sandan · 20/01/2022 07:05

Dont feel bad, we thought my son was "putting it on" as he was still tearing about the house, pissing about with his sisters and playing nintendo, turned out he had broken his collar bone.

He never cried, just said it hurt when he tried to brush his teeth. But he has an aversion to teeth brushing so assumed it was another excuse

AFAIK You don't need a PCR ffs it's lft now.

And there are other illnesses in the world apart from covid.

Hope your Dc is ok

DaisyWaldron · 20/01/2022 07:22

You do need a PCR if you have symptoms and a negative lateral flow. You just don't need to confirm a positive lateral flow with a PCR.

You do if you have symptoms.
TheReluctantPhoenix · 20/01/2022 07:27

It’s not about Covid, or certainly not exclusively about it.

You just don’t send a sick infectious child to school, even if it is just a ‘normal’ virus! It is not fair on the child, his classmates or the teachers and other school staff.

Walkacrossthesand · 20/01/2022 07:38

That spot would do for chickenpox - looks like it's got a bit of a blistery middle.

October2020 · 20/01/2022 07:41

Just to add that I was really ill with a temp of 41, no other symptoms at all - felt like death when the paracetamol wore off though. Covid negative and lasted about 5 days then stopped. Never became anything! So it might just be a weird bug going around.

bhooks · 20/01/2022 09:32

Just to say the symptoms you describe (minus the spot) are the symptoms most of the children with Covid in my child's class had/have.

daisybrown37 · 20/01/2022 11:13

I would do a LFT. I know you should do a PCR if you have symptoms, but if he has sensory issues then a LFT test maybe less stressful for him. If it is negative then do the PCR just in case.

However, keep an eye out for more spots in case it is chickenpox.

Basically, don’t send him to school until you have ruled out covid and chickenpox.

Quartz2208 · 20/01/2022 11:18

Chickenpox seems likely - temperature then the first few slowly appearing before they all come out makes sense

Intothelight123 · 20/01/2022 11:39

Could also be a UTI

INeedNewShoes · 20/01/2022 11:59

DD is like this. She can have a high temperature and be skipping around perfectly fine. We've had a lot of PCRs these past two years as she goes above 38 quite frequently.

Have to say, that your DS is presenting exactly how DD did with CP though.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/01/2022 15:01

That spot could be a chicken pock. It’s not unheard of for there to only be one, though others may follow.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 15:05

How soon do they usually start popping up? He still only has that one !

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 20/01/2022 15:19

I had just the one for several days. Then I had an entire universe full, popping up over a day. Some people only ever get one or two.

If it's CP, that one will form a blackish, itchy scab.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 15:38

I will keep an eye. Keep checking him 😆 do they blanch btw ? This one disappears if I press on it but comes straight back after.
He's fine atm ! Still slightly warm but not a fever, and fine in himself. He's very pleased he's off school 🙄

My kids have both had chickenpox recently (what a way to start the year!) and the eldest, who had a pretty mild case only had one spot on her back for about 36-48 hours before all the others popped up.

TulipsGarden · 20/01/2022 16:12

You don't send a child with a fever to school, even pre-Covid. A fever indicates they're ill with something and probably will feel worse as the day goes on.

And you're still meant to get a PCR with symptoms, you just don't need to confirm an asymptomatic lateral flow with a PCR.

That looks like a chicken pox spot to me. When I had it I got one spot on Sunday afternoon, and the rest appeared on Monday morning.

Somethingsnappy · 20/01/2022 16:42

Just to say, my 4 kids have all had Covid (isolating currently). Their only symptoms have been high temperatures and stomach aches. Covid is certainly one strong possibility. The LFTs haven't been very reliable though. They only presented positive days after these symptoms started.

tempbutnotill · 20/01/2022 16:51

I have done a lft first thing and it was stark negative. I'm not convinced it's Covid, I know can't be sure but we've all been exposed recently and should've caught it really but none of us did. I have sent off for a postal pcr.
He keeps getting red cheeks, only one side at a time though

OP posts:
Idontlikeworms · 20/01/2022 18:32

Slapped cheek?

StellaGibson118 · 20/01/2022 18:44

My boys came on verrryyyy slowly, took a few days of the odd spot them BAM absolutely covered everywhere, even inside nostrils, eyelids and other unholy places.

OopsadayZ · 21/01/2022 16:48

Hey @tempbutnotill how is your child?

Hope all well and back to school.
