Just so concerned about this country

To be honest, we, as a family are 'ok'. We're by no means well off but have a reasonable income and not huge outgoings (at the moment); but I am so worried about the state of the country economically. Just watching the national and local news today - the cost of living is insane; the Government is a huge mess - with no sign of any of them giving a monkeys about the populus, and so many thousands of people are struggling and will be in a terrible position over the next few months.
How on earth is this sustainable? What is going to happen when people simply cannot afford to, well, live, basically.
I work in the homelessness sector and can only see more families and individuals coming through the doors - and with massive funding cuts, honestly, what will happen?
I'm feeling a little hysterical over it all, for want of a better word!!
Will things improve - what has to happen?

And as for the person criticising the young woman with the false eyelashes etc - may I also say fuck you. You have absolutely bloody No Idea.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 22:50

@canbage

The housing market is booming because of demand. It will go even higher because of the growth in population.

Are you saying it's nothing to do with low interest rates, QE & inflation of assets?

I'm saying that demand from six and a half millions of EU citizens who have applied and receives settled and pre settled status here might have something to do with it.

And that's immigration from the EU only. The rest is on top of that.

WorstXmasEver · 19/01/2022 22:50

I think the country is totally flawed.

They reckon average house prices went up £25k in the past year. How are people supposed to get on the property ladder nowadays?

Even where I live the properties are like £100k & there's not much to them & life insurance is the only way I'll be able to pass funds for a property on to my kids. It's really not on.

@canbage

Yes, there are countries where there is nothing at all . No jobs.

The good old race to the bottom 😴

My thoughts exactly.

'Yes, it's bad but it could be so worse'.

Really is that your highest aspiration? Is that why people voted Brexit? Tory?

Lolamento · 19/01/2022 22:52

Do not be ridiculous. The threat is about a person worrying about the state of this country. Of course you need to compare to give perspective.
Shambolicatthleast · 19/01/2022 22:54

@Lolamento sure many opportunities in the south east and london. What about up here in the NW outside the major cities ? Still waiting for the levelling up promised for the last 12 years....

@NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor

I’ve been having sleepless nights too. We’re literally counting every penny at the moment. Our fixed rate mortgage comes to an end in November, with gas and electric going up I don’t know how we will get by. My daughter is only 5 months, we can’t let the house get too cold for her obviously so we have to put the heating on. Our house is cold and not energy efficient but can’t afford anything to fix it. DP is starting a new job on more money in a few months but it’ll wipe out the measly UC we get so we will be no better off really. I’ll have to go back to work but after childcare we will be no better off either. If it wasn’t for her I think I might genuinely top myself I feel so sick and scared and miserable.
Flowers I really hope things get easier for you @NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor

Your perspective & only contribution is don't worry other countries have it worst. Not sure how useful that approach is...

WorstXmasEver · 19/01/2022 22:57

@ChardonnaysPetDragon I agree with you. When I pick my kids up from school I look around & think about 20% of the parents are English.

Barely anyone speaks to each other so there's no community at all & whenever any local event is put on or there are any school trips every single volunteer is English.

Immigration has ruined the UK & there are large areas of the country where the English are a minority nowadays.

Kendodd · 19/01/2022 22:58

This is one of the things that really worries me. This blame a foreigner attitude. I suppose you blame immigrants for the state of the NHS and schools as well? Completely ignoring the fact that the NHS is kept going on immigrant labour.

canbage · 19/01/2022 22:59

sure many opportunities in the south east and london.

I recently read & was quite shocked to read that "the The capital’s youthh unemployment has soared by 55 per cent to 105,000 since the start of the pandemicc with 21 per cent of young people seeking workk_ jobless"

I feel sorry for today's young.

Lolamento · 19/01/2022 22:59

@Shapiro

So you not think that your view may be coloured by the sector you work in and your own personal circumstances?

Yes there are many that are not doing so well but there are also many that are doing well and will continue to do well.

This
Kendodd · 19/01/2022 23:00

Instead of putting the blame for the state of the country where it belongs, with the government, why would you blame people who can't even vote in this country?

lightand · 19/01/2022 23:00

If you feel that faith helps why not.

Thank you @Lolamento

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:00

"This blame a foreigner attitude. I suppose you blame immigrants for the state of the NHS and schools as well? Completely ignoring the fact that the NHS is kept going on immigrant labour."

Everything is the fault of immigrants, which ignores the fact we need young immigrants to work & pay taxes because of the ageing population

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 23:02

What blame?

Blame the market economy. Increase in demand lead to increase in price. It's simple.

I'm talking about house prices, why do you feel the need to bring the NHS into this and the "blame the foreigner" whistle? No prorate arguments I suppose.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/01/2022 23:03

proper

Did Brexit change any of that?

lollipoprainbow · 19/01/2022 23:06

Really?
You think nobody ever talks about immigration?

Not without being accused of being racist no, as the poster said an adult conversation about it would be nice.

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:06

It's really not as simple as that.

flashbac · 19/01/2022 23:07

Some of the posters on this thread are absolute jokers. So far, according to them, the blame on the cost of living crisis lies with:
-Too many foreigners
-People spending money on fake eyelashes and hair
-Net zero measures
And my favourite:

  • because we are no longer a Christian country
As for those who say there isn't a problem because they don't see it, you are just blind to it.

Do you really think that the six and a bit millions, and counting, because they can bring their family over as well, EU citizens settling here, have no effect on the housing market?
Lolamento · 19/01/2022 23:12

@balanceo

Kendodd Wed 19-Jan-22 20:40:30 *@balanceo* Eight million more people in the UK since 2001. The elephant in the room nobody ever talks about. About time we had an adult convervation, about how many people can stand on this rock.

What exactly are you hoping for? Nazi style deportations?

As said, I'd like there to be an 'adult' conversation about population, sustainable population, whatever....maybe we need more people ? Let's hear it. Your kneejerk response clearly shows you incapable of joining such an 'ADULT' conversion.

Well said Balanceo.

People moan about the lack of housing, services, NHS but they want open borders for all at the same time.🙄

lollipoprainbow · 19/01/2022 23:13

I'm worried sick. My landlord is selling so I need to find somewhere else to rent, rent has rocketed where I live so the price I'm paying now will only get me a studio/one bed as the lady at the letting agent sniggered helpfully. That's on top of energy, food, NI, council tax increases. I'm a single working mum, there needs to be much more help for the working poor or the Just about managing, there needs to be more affordable social housing. I can't get a mortgage even though it would be a lot lower per month than my rent. Bloody crazy, I fear for my daughters future I really do.

canbage · 19/01/2022 23:13

No I never said they had no effect, but low interest rates & QE, right to buy have had a far greater effect.
