Cheap skate or genius?

DC announced in the supermarket yesterday that they would like jelly in lunchboxes. I looked at the cost of 5 prepared jellies - £2, on offer. 1 block of jelly, 68p. I've used half the block and made 3 jellies. I've put the rest in a sandwich bag and will make another batch on Wednesday.
As per title, cheapskate or genius?

Sensible!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/01/2022 20:51

I used to do that! DD liked having fruit in there too.

tobypercy · 16/01/2022 20:53

I used to make up half a pack at a time, the other half keeps for months.

If I did that for my son it would end up costing more than buying ready-made though, because he leaves at least half of the containers at school, drives me nuts Grin

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 16/01/2022 20:54

It’s hardly genius to use a cheaper product 😂

Icantremembermyusername · 16/01/2022 20:56

Oh, I like the idea of adding fruit! Very much liking the '6th' portion being for me on Friday with some fruit added :-)

I think @Sirzy summed up with 'sensible'.

You've made jelly from jelly cubes? Is that what you mean? What else do you do with it?

Have I missed another use for it?

qualitygirl · 16/01/2022 21:03

Hardly genius @Icantremembermyusername we're you being sarcastic. Confused

qualitygirl · 16/01/2022 21:04

Were not we're....bloody autocorrect

Stopdropnroll · 16/01/2022 21:05

As children my sister and I used to eat the jelly cubes raw so my mum would often send us to school with half a pack of raw jelly in our lunch boxes Confused I do sometimes wonder what on earth she was thinking Grin

Itsalmostanaccessory · 16/01/2022 21:05

This is just normal.

eekbumbler · 16/01/2022 21:06

In the olden days you could only make jelly from a block of cubes ...

I'm guessing you're not pushing 50 OP 🤣

eekbumbler · 16/01/2022 21:07

Ohh and eating a half melted cube from the bowl... Squidgy, sugary, naughty heaven!

TheChosenTwo · 16/01/2022 21:08

Huh? Instead of buying it ready made you’ve just made it yourself?
I think it’s neither cheapskate nor genius, just sensible!!
I myself buy the pots for ds as I can’t be fucked to make it, the ready made pots fit properly inside his lunchbox and the empty pots come in handy for school projects.

Bluebluemoon39 · 16/01/2022 21:08

Cheapskate - don't let your dc's be the ones who take in their mums homemade version in a Tupperware box! They probably want the little individual pots like their friends have.

If they're truly not bothered and just want it for the actual jelly taste then fair enough.

Icantremembermyusername · 16/01/2022 21:10

No hidden agenda, normally DC ask and I say yes or no. I genuinely wondered if I was being 'cheap' buying and making jelly rather than buying ready prepared tubs of it when it is so easy to prepare.

It’s a 70s pudding having fruit in jelly. Use old yogurt pots to save money.

What do you mean by being cheap?

Surely you don't buy all your food ready prepared do you?

It's normal to make food.

BliainNua · 16/01/2022 21:18

Shameful admission here; when I was younger I used to melt the jelly cubes with hot water (as instructed) but instead of letting it set I used to drink it Blush

That was a standard remedy in our house for white spots on fingernails, for dodgy hair, or for general feeling poorly. Hot thick sugary jelly sauce. Yum!
ZenNudist · 16/01/2022 21:23

Its not exactly an earth shattering life hack is it? I can't see the point to jelly as a lunch food. OK as a one off treat maybe.

WestendVBroadway · 16/01/2022 21:27

Well I must be either a genius or a cheapskate as I make my own sandwiches instead of buying prepared ones from the supermarket. 😀

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 16/01/2022 21:28

I feel like this should be in take a break.

ginswinger · 16/01/2022 21:29

I do this too! Sometimes I put in edible glitter, sometimes a mini lego figure for a giggle. Occasionally I put custard on top and some sprinkles.
