Cheap skate or genius?

DC announced in the supermarket yesterday that they would like jelly in lunchboxes. I looked at the cost of 5 prepared jellies - £2, on offer. 1 block of jelly, 68p. I've used half the block and made 3 jellies. I've put the rest in a sandwich bag and will make another batch on Wednesday.
As per title, cheapskate or genius?

Farmfoods is your friend here. My son's homemade jellies end up in a right mess. I buy in bulk from Farmfoods of the ambient ones so we don't end up with a sticky mess.

ImInStealthMode · 16/01/2022 22:32

Isn't this just the same as buying bread and sandwich fillings, instead of ready-made sandwiches, or carrots instead of pre-cut carrot sticks?? Hmm

EveningOverRooftops · 16/01/2022 22:50

I do this with easiyo yoghurt. One mix makes one pot of yoghurt and that can split into 7 portions of flavoured yoghurt. Bags of mix cost £2-3. Though I’m using more that have hit their BBE date so I can get them for £1 a bag. 7 servings of yoghurt for £1.

I’ve even made up jellies as you have then topped them with yoghurt for DC as a dessert.

With prices going up it’s not daft to be happy having found something to cut your food bills a little.

Sensible, and it cuts down on single use plastic too.

CourtRand · 17/01/2022 12:09

The correct choice - less plastic waste and cheaper. I'm surprised people do anything else tbh

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/01/2022 12:16

It's neither, it's just normal.
Your kids wanted jelly, you gave them jelly.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/01/2022 12:17

Oo raw jelly cubes. Delicious.

RuthTopp · 17/01/2022 12:20

Could you save yoghurt pots and make up those. For the lid , perhaps cling film secured with an elastic band . ( My genius suggestion 😁 ) Extra points if they bring back and you can re -use .

mycatscausehell · 17/01/2022 12:44

the powder sometimes works better just btw. I've found the cubes never really set or stay set if they're out of the fridge for a while

TeenPlusCat · 17/01/2022 13:02

OP have you tried making strawberry jelly up with milk instead of water? Delicious.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/01/2022 13:04

Neither - just normal!

Fallagain · 17/01/2022 13:08

@Bluebluemoon39

Cheapskate - don't let your dc's be the ones who take in their mums homemade version in a Tupperware box! They probably want the little individual pots like their friends have.

If they're truly not bothered and just want it for the actual jelly taste then fair enough.

Shock do people really let their children dictate stuff like this to them?
iklboo · 17/01/2022 13:16

In the 1970s you just had the cubes in your packed lunch- like a chewy treat

Yep. Like an early version of Haribo.

TheChosenTwo · 17/01/2022 16:32

@Fallagain it’s hardly on the level of dictatorship now is it Grin
My kids can express a preference for stuff, it’s my job as a parent to make a final decision.
