I'm fairly sure Dad wasn't really into films - I don't recall him ever mentioning a favourite - but Mum certainly had a few. Mainly big classic war films such as The Longest Day, Where Eagles Dare and The Cruel Sea. She was also a fan of unashamedly soppy stuff like Brief Encounter, The Wind Cannot Read and Love Story. For context, both M&D were born in the 1930s.

My favourite film for umpteen years is Gregory's Girl, which I think Mum quite liked too.

Also interested to hear about grandparents' film preferences, if known.

I don't mean to be rude - although I realise it probably sounds is Grin - but why?!

ZaZathecat · 16/01/2022 13:37

I think my mum's was Mamma Mia) she would have been 88 now, and my grandmother's was The Great Waltz and she would have been 117 now.

My nanas favourite film was Ghost or Forever Young.

I don't know anyone else's.

Liverbird77 · 16/01/2022 13:44

My mum loves the Godfather films!
She also like the Greek Tycoon!

Just everyday MN conversation, BIWI. Nothing more, nothing less.

My parents are in their early 70s. Dad loves comedies - national Lampoon stuff - Animal House- Police Academy - loved Woody Allen for a while until it became clear how revolting he is and now boycotts him - he adored the first Peter Rabbit which I had to drag him to. Just really into silly harmless comedies. Mother likes sort of sweeping romantic family dramas as well as having a real penchant for violent thrillers. (This mirrors her reading taste as well- Catherine Cookson mixed with Stig larson and anything gruesome).

MilkshakesForAll · 16/01/2022 13:52

DH's dad is into real classics- anything with Jimmy Stewart and the Hitchcocks. He was in his late 90s when he passed.

MilkshakesForAll · 16/01/2022 13:54

Oh! I forgot - my father also has a massive love for anything Chinese and is a little mad about films like Raise the Red Lantern as well as anything with Jackie Chan. Quite eclectic.

lollipoprainbow · 16/01/2022 13:56

My mum loved west side story, I wanted to see the new one but I would have been an emotional wreck as mum now has advanced dementia. Somewhere would have killed me!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 16/01/2022 13:57

My dad's favourite film was Zulu. My mum's is Home Alone.

LBOCS2 · 16/01/2022 14:20

DM liked a thriller so things like Hunt for Red October, Shutter Island or Air Force One. She also liked the classic Indiana Jones movies, and if Pretty Woman or Four Weddings came on in the evening (even if she was just about to go to bed!) you could guarantee she'd stay up late watching them.

Dad, I'm not sure about. I genuinely don't think I've ever sat and watched a film with him.

rambleonplease · 16/01/2022 16:12

My dad loved musicals, his all time favourite was singing in the rain. He would be 91 now.

My mums favourite movie is Dr Zhivago. She's 87.

My favourite movie, hard to choose. Either The Godfather 2 or Priscilla Queen of the Desert!

ZittiEBuoni · 16/01/2022 16:14

My dad loved westerns, especially the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns.

My mum's preference was period dramas and what she called 'soppy black and white films', featuring beautifully-coiffed women in silk nightgowns. We would often settle down to watch one of these on BBC2 on a cold or rainy Saturday afternoon if going out to play wasn't an option. (1970s)

gabsdot45 · 16/01/2022 17:20

My parents are 75. I rang them the other day and they were watching an old western. I think it was called the Rare bread or something like that. Maureen O'Hara and James Stewart. They saw it on their first date.
So cute.

workwoes123 · 16/01/2022 17:54

None. My mum once said (when I was growing up in the 80s) “we’re really not video club kind of people, are we?” . She’s such a snob.

Actually, Indiana jones films: they both liked them, 1-3 though the Crystal skull was shockingly bad. But that’s about it.

They watched a lot of series: Blackadder, red dwarf, etc. And they quite like detective things now. But not films. I’ve never known them to go to the cinema, except one time my dad took us to see… Indiana Jones!

HaudYerWheestFella · 16/01/2022 18:00

We have a running joke in our house that if Jason and the Argonauts is on tv, my dad will be watching it, so much so he watched it about three times in as many weeks. And after that then his other most watched films are Zulu and Bridge on the River Kwai (think it’s called that)

CovidCorvid · 16/01/2022 18:05

Old James Bond films. Stuff like Out of Africa, Zulu.

For some reason every time Zulu was on I was forced to watch it. Even though I was primary school age and was bored shitless. No idea why my mum thought forced film watching of stuff she liked was a good idea!

NoRegerts · 16/01/2022 18:06

My parents are both in their late 60s.

Dad: classic dad films- The Great Escape, The Italian Job, The Battle of Britain, Zulu, Bridge over the River Kwai etc

Mum: shall we say somewhat less critically acclaimed films, ahem Grin- Love Actually, Marley and Me, Notting Hill etc

Echobelly · 16/01/2022 18:07

My mum likes classic sci fi like the original Russian Solaris, and Blade Runner, but also David Lean's 'Great Expectations' and Akira Kurosawa's classics like 'Ran' and 'Rashomon'

One of my dad's favourites is 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', and both of them enjoy Robert Altman and Coen Brothers films.

mamaduckbone · 16/01/2022 18:19

I found out recently that my mum loves Empire of the Sun, which surprised me. She's 89.

My cousin was a rehearsal/cinematography stand in for the kid in Empire of the Sun. I just googled it to make sure I’d got the right film (I have) and realised that kid was Christian Bale. Had no idea. 😁
CMOTDibbler · 16/01/2022 18:35

I don't think my dad ever watched a film tbh, and I remember my mum taking us to see Star Wars, but again never at home. They both watched their favourite DVDs endlessly though. For mum before dementia that was a lot of ballet and opera - and after dementia Dads Army for some strange reason. Dad adored Andre Rieu

mamaduckbone · 16/01/2022 18:36

I'm a year or so younger than Christian Bale and had a HUGE crush on him in this film when it came outSmile
Dh and I watched it again recently (after
Mum was talking about it) and it is a brilliant film.

My ddad loved a western or a war film.

elp30 · 16/01/2022 18:39

My mother died in 1981 so her favorite films were older, like West Side Story and The African Queen.

I know she hated Natalie Wood portraying a Latina, especially but loved Rita Moreno's performance and rated her highly.

I have wondered what she would have thought of a Latino cast in Steven Spielberg's version. We are Mexican so being represented in media positively is important.

My father's favorite films starred his cousin who appeared in a few comedies in Mexican cinema. Apart from those, he never went to the cinema or watched movies on tv.
