UK holidays... Where's your favourite place?

Hello!
I'm after holiday recommendations!

My husband and I have always loved holidaying in the UK and try to get away for 3 individual weeks each year plus a weekend or 2. We stay in lodges, ideally with a hot tub and we love walking, good food, finding a new activity to try just to give you an idea of what we like. We live in the North East so are very spoilt with wonderful things in our doorstep.

I'd love to find some hidden gems, places you go back to, places with lots to do, often overlooked places etc. Google tends to such the most popular places!

Many thanks!

Skye is absolutely beautiful. So much to see and do.

Whitefire · 15/01/2022 19:57

Filey. Prefer it over Whitby, which whilst lovely always seems like a day trip for us rather than a holiday.

@kitkat151 Hawes is one of our weeks away this year! Would love some recommendations for places to eat or any good walks if you have some?

@Whitefire I'd been looking at Filey/Whitby. Anything in particular you would recommend in Filey. I liked the idea of staying there and then a day out at Whitby and possibly Robin Hood's Bay.

Agree with @Whitefire with Filey - lovely chilled atmosphere and a great base for exploring the area. Not loads to do in Filey but great beaches and costal walks, friendly cafes and bars and some lovely independent shops. Day trips to Whitby, Falling Foss, Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes, Beverley, Scarborough, York all possible.

St Andrews is beautiful (seen another poster recommend it), we went to visit the Uni there. On the train from Edinburgh we seen some amazing beaches along the coastline there. It was my first visit to Scotland, loved it, maybe as I grew up in North Wales. Snowdonia is lovely, if you’re wanting to visit more places in Wales. I live in Surrey now and there’s some many amazing places to walk around here, so don’t rule out some counties you might not have considered. It’s apparently the most wooded area of the UK

Tenby, st Ives and totnes

Another vote for Snowdonia, Llanberi is a great base. Also the very end of Cornwall, Porth Curno and the Minack theatre are just amazing and St Micheals mount.

PennineWayinSlingbacks · 19/01/2022 17:11

Dorset. A bit biased because we live here.

This is very local to us - the lodges look amazing!

Another vote for Bigbury-on-sea and also Dartmouth

The Wye Valley and the Marches. The Wye river has some beautiful spots, there are lovely small towns for pootling about and good food options. Plenty of walking options, including Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd. There are a number of things like food festivals and antiques festivals if you like those too. I dislike the Hay festival but Hay itself is very sweet outside the festival.

Multicolouredsequins · 19/01/2022 17:31

Yorkshire Dales. Not too touristy, beautiful walks, waterfalls, castles etc. Around Hawes and Askrigg is a good base to explore from. Swimming and paddling in lake Semerwater is a lovely experience and you can trek with alpacas there.

DerAlteMann · 19/01/2022 17:37

Wales. North or South.

changedforschoolpost · 19/01/2022 17:46

Dumfries and Galloway- beautiful place, wonderful beaches, mountains, moors and woods- great for history lovers as so many stone circles etc and some lovely little towns like Kirkcudbright. Never heaving, very friendly and very family friendly.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/01/2022 17:48

We go to Pembrokeshire a lot. Love it.

Forshorttheycallmecomp · 19/01/2022 17:50

Anywhere on the East Coast between Edinburgh and St Andrew’s. Also close enough to visit places like Loch Lomond for the day. Lots of sea, city, castles, walks and stunning historical villages to visit. Plus chocolate, like the chocolate cafe at Pittenweem!

Lulu1919 · 19/01/2022 17:58

Carbis Bay - Cornwall
Falmouth - as above
Chichester harbour
Start Bay - Devon
Wells area - Somerset
Lyme Regis - Dorset

Not technically UK, but the Channel Islands. There are flights from Teesside to Jersey in the summer. Loads of history, scenic walking, water-sports etc.

Moonflower12 · 19/01/2022 18:11

@pinkpip100
I was lucky enough to have been brought up in Penbryn.
Despite living in the Cotswolds now, this area is still the best in the world. I came on to recommend it.

pinkpip100 · 19/01/2022 18:25

@Moonflower12 - what a beautiful place to have grown up!
