UK holidays... Where's your favourite place?

Sosigsandwich · 15/01/2022 16:18

Hello!
I'm after holiday recommendations!

My husband and I have always loved holidaying in the UK and try to get away for 3 individual weeks each year plus a weekend or 2. We stay in lodges, ideally with a hot tub and we love walking, good food, finding a new activity to try just to give you an idea of what we like. We live in the North East so are very spoilt with wonderful things in our doorstep.

I'd love to find some hidden gems, places you go back to, places with lots to do, often overlooked places etc. Google tends to such the most popular places!

Many thanks!

I love the Scottish Islands. Skye is very beautiful with lots to see but everywhere tends to be very crowded. Stein Inn in Waternish has the oldest pub on the Island -( been taken over by Paul Rankin) , and a Michelin starred fish restaurant at the waterside .
The beaches on Harris are stunning . It’s quiet and peaceful but with less infrastructure.Lots of local history Uig in Lewis is amazing, and the Seatrek boat trips are brilliant. If you are lucky enough to get good weather these are my favourite places to go . And there is a different atmosphere in the Hebrides compared to the mainland

Bigbury on sea in Devon and Newport in Pembrokeshire.

PuppyMonkey · 15/01/2022 16:32

Eskdale in the Lake District.

Pumpkinstace · 15/01/2022 16:32

Robin Hoods Bay.

Beckyboo123 · 15/01/2022 16:34

Cornwall is lovely, we went to the lizard last year and it was beautiful

pinkpip100 · 15/01/2022 16:36

@RunnerDown - I really want to book a holiday to the Hebrides, but am worried about the midges! We'd either go at May half term or (ideally) in late July/Aug. Any idea how bad the midge situation is at these times of year?
(Sorry for hijacking OP!)

pinkpip100 · 15/01/2022 16:37

Oh, and OP I recommend Wales (Gower and Cardigan areas are both stunning) and the Suffolk coast.

Sosigsandwich · 15/01/2022 16:50

These are all wonderful ideas thank you! I've never heard of bigbury on sea and the Scottish isles have always looked beautiful. @pinkpip100 hijack away! We're actually if to Wales as one of our holidays this year... Any recommendations in particular?

St Andrews and the Easy Neuk of fife

pinkpip100 · 15/01/2022 17:08

@Sosigsandwich - in Ceredigion we love the areas around Aberaeron and Aberporth, fab beaches like Llangrannog, Mwnt, Cei Bach, Tresaith, boat trips from Newquay, Ynyslas nature reserve, Devil's Bridge falls etc. And in the Gower you can't beat Rhossili Bay.

weegiemum · 15/01/2022 17:19

I was coming on to say the Outer Hebrides but see I've been beaten to it! We lived there for 10 years and go back to Harris whenever we can (kept our house). There are loads of sc places and the foodie scene is expanding all the time.

HeadToToesNo · 15/01/2022 17:21

@pinkpip100 go in May, it'll be perfect!

Sprig1 · 15/01/2022 17:29

Exmoor, Shropshire or Northumberland. I like places that aren't rammed with other holiday makers.

MorningNinja · 15/01/2022 17:29

North Wales - Snowdonia.

We stay in Beddgelert - perfectfor the mountainsand the coast. Its rugged, beautiful and feels almost mythical. Plus it's like going back in time.

gogohm · 15/01/2022 17:40

St David's s my favourite

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/01/2022 17:53

Croyde in Devon. Excellent if you fancy trying surfing, lovely beach and sunsets.

Wiltshire, low profile county, but fantastic if you like walking - the Wiltshire downs are stunning, the Ridgeway a great walk, and lovely villages and market towns with good pubs. Also home to Stonehenge, Avebury, Silbury hill and other Neolithic sites if you like that sorta thing.

I’d also say Northumberland is under visited, but if you’re NE you know that!

Cairngorms in Scotland lovely, great walks but also loch swimming. Very remote though (you aren’t exactly stumbling over pubs)

Cape Wrath and the moorland wilderness that surrounds it is our only real wilderness, and is extraordinary. Quite otherworldly.

Northern Ireland also under visited.

For walking - go to Snowdonia in the Autumn
In the Summer, head to Anglesey - so many beautiful beaches
Pembrokeshire, particularly the Northern part up towards Cardigan has beautiful beaches - though a mega journey from the NE of England. You can walk the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path
The Gower is lovely too - around Swansea and out to the West from there.

itwasntaparty · 15/01/2022 18:59

Isle of Wight - we love it, also Norfolk.

Bookridden · 15/01/2022 19:05

Dorset has beautiful scenery and good access to cultural stuff too.

tiredanddangerous · 15/01/2022 19:09

Pembrokeshire and Anglesey

Icequeen01 · 15/01/2022 19:14

I love the Cotswolds. We stayed in Stow on the Wold in September and had a lovely holiday. Stow is really convenient to visit lots of places and has some lovely restaurants. I want to go back again this year.

It’s really interesting how different tastes are - these are two places I really don’t like.
countdowntonap · 15/01/2022 19:38

Anglesey is the place for you if you like walks and good food!

Kitkat151 · 15/01/2022 19:45

Keswick, Hawes and Llanberis are my favourites ....I visit them all at least once a year

kizzywizz · 15/01/2022 19:49

Another vote for beautiful Anglesey.
