Thinking of signing up

@tabulahrasa

Fruit isn’t free when it’s mashed, cooked, blended, juiced or tinned because it’s then the same amount of calories in a smaller, easier to eat and easier to digest amount - so easier to overeat and you’re likely to be hungry sooner afterwards.
One banana is one banana though. So where is the sense?
tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 20:38

“One banana is one banana though. So where is the sense?“

It’s still got one banana calories, but it’s smooshed into a smaller size, so less filling, you’re not chewing it, so less filling.

You might not add anything to it because bananas come in ones, but you may well go, hmm, I’m still hungry and have something else or you might eat lunch a bit earlier and then eat something else you wouldn’t have after or you might have a bigger lunch than normal (no clue why I’m assuming the mashed banana is in the morning btw).

The calorie density and how filling is part of how things are free, fruit only works with that if it’s being eaten in its natural state, otherwise it tips into being a risk to your calorie deficit.

If you’re 100%, you’re eating a third or more of the speed free stuff, you’re making no mistakes with your free stuff, you’re well within syns and your healthy extras are properly weighed or measured... a banana being mashed isn’t going to make much difference.

But, if you’ve got a few little other things going on that aren’t quite how it’s supposed to be - then it’ll add up and it might.

How am I more likely to be more hungry eating a banana whole than mashed? By the time I've chewed it and it gets to my stomach it's been pretty well mashed by my teeth. I don't swallow food whole.

Sorry but I don't buy it.

I've eaten a SW recipe for tea tonight, my DH does it - he's lost a lot of weight and kept it off by sticking to the plan.

You do get to choose what you eat on the plan, and as previous posters have said if your meet the requirements you can get a referral on the NHS.

iklboo · 14/01/2022 21:16

But the banana is mashed by my teeth before it gets to my stomach. Exactly the same consistency as mashed separately in a bowl.

It’s still got one banana calories, but it’s smooshed into a smaller size, so less filling, you’re not chewing it, so less filling.

It's the same calories mashed or chewed. It's just as 'filling' mashed or chewed. Mass doesn't magically evaporate, nor calories attracted, in the act of mashing a banana. It makes no sense. How does chewing food make it filling?

Soup is free. How? I've boiled the vegetables in stock then blended them to a liquid. So the veg aren't in their 'natural state', nor am I chewing soup. The argument makes no sense.

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 21:18

“By the time I've chewed it and it gets to my stomach it's been pretty well mashed by my teeth.”

Yes, but chewing is one of the ways your brain registers what you’re eating...so it helps you register that you’re full.

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 21:22

“Soup is free. How? I've boiled the vegetables in stock then blended them to a liquid. So the veg aren't in their 'natural state', nor am I chewing soup. The argument makes no sense.”

You’ve added water and so the vegetables are basically diluted for starters, and you don’t eat it as quickly.

That’s why vegetable juice is synned, but soup isn’t.

Basically the quicker you can neck something down the longer it takes to register you’re full.

elelel · 14/01/2022 21:34

@tabulahrasa

Are you a SW 'consultant' or just rehashing the absolute bullshit they tell you in group? Because from a nutritional point of view, it makes no sense.

iklboo · 14/01/2022 21:43

Eh?

Someone asked why they syn it, that’s what slimming world’s stuff all says, reworded obviously.

But it ties in with other stuff I’ve seen - mindful eating for instance.

It’s not about the actual calories changing, if calorie counting (or a version of it) works for you, it makes no difference if you eat a banana or have it in a smoothie... never mind mashed.

But it makes sense to me that if you’re relying on creating a calorie deficit by feeling full then what state the banana in would make a difference.

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 21:48

@iklboo

When you make soup... it’s got stock, so water, not just veg.

Well that’s how I make soup anyway.

DarlingDarwin · 14/01/2022 21:49

Please don’t do RH fitness as someone else suggested previously. You are conned into signing up for a year (you can’t leave) and the programme is essentially someone bullying you, and the members hanging up on you. And the guy who runs it is weirdly misogynistic.

elelel · 14/01/2022 21:50

But it makes sense to me that if you’re relying on creating a calorie deficit by feeling full then what state the banana in would make a difference.

Have a think about what you just said...

A banana is a banana. It's not 2 bananas if you mash it and it doesn't suddenly grow calories either. A banana is a banana.

They are talking utter shit to you.

Diluted vegetables? Come on, you surely don't believe that?

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 21:52

“A banana is a banana. It's not 2 bananas if you mash it and it doesn't suddenly grow calories either.”

I literally just said exactly that!

@tabulahrasa

So why do I have to syn a mashed banana then?

iklboo · 14/01/2022 21:57

Well yes, I add water to vegetables to make soup. But it doesn't dilute them. Just makes them float. You can't dilute a solid.

Mackmama · 14/01/2022 21:57

I joined last year, did it for a few months and lost 1.5st which I’ve kept off just gaining a little bit over Christmas. I’ve joined again to see if I can lose a bit more. I like the group and the consultant is really nice. I don’t do the ready meals and the hi-Fi bars but nobody at my group has said you have to. I find you can eat pretty normally on it, probably not so much if you like to have lots of takeaways or you eat lots of bread but you’d have to reduce that on most diets. I

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 22:00

“So why do I have to syn a mashed banana then?”

If what I put wasn’t clear, go read it in the pack, or the website...

I was honestly just trying to be helpful because I’ve tried lots of other ways of losing weight and read lots of other stuff about what makes you feel full and paying attention to how you’re eating as well as what, so I was giving you my interpretation of it.

Which is basically, if you don’t have to chew and you eat something faster, it’s not as filling.

But if you don’t want to syn a banana... don’t... I know people that don’t syn alcohol and still manage to lose weight.

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 22:01

I meant when it’s blended, it’s effectively diluted, possibly a bad choice of words though?

Yummiliscious · 14/01/2022 22:03

I love that people are calling it a con! Reducing fat and sugar and increasing veg and fruit and taking up exercise is basically what the NHS advises. Someone with marketing skills created SW based on this. Obviously if you do it for a bit and then you go back to eating cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner you will put that weight back on. Nobody has conned that weight back on.

iklboo · 14/01/2022 22:08

@tabulahrasa - I'm sorry. You were trying to be helpful and I was being an arsehole. I truly apologise.

I am a SW member, lost 1.5 stone so far so I know the lifestyle change it advises works. I have absolutely no idea why I was so hung up about a fecking banana!

tabulahrasa · 14/01/2022 22:16

People always get angry about bananas, avocados and muller lights, lol, I don’t even eat any of them...

I’ve been overweight or obese most of my adult life, I can tell you the ins and outs of most ways of losing weight, because I know what I should eat, it’s doing it that’s my issue.

Slimming world works for me because it’s enough structure that I don’t just derail it but not so much that I get obsessive about it.

Probably because it's not an intuitive reason. I suspect if you look at most schemes you'll find something to pick at.

As for 'if it worked they'd go bust' same goes for them all. Truth is we all like our wine/gin etc and our chocolate and cakes. (Despite all the 'I'd never eat that rubbish' we hear we tend to enjoy our fish and chips, takeaways etc.). They work when you're on it but for most of us we just go back to old habits.
