Counselling/therapist help

Imhereforthefood · 12/01/2022 23:31

I’ve established I think I need some counselling/therapy. But I’m struggling with who to choose, I’ve scrolled some reliable websites but there are so many. Does anyone have advice on how to pick?
I don’t really know what’s wrong with me iyswim, just that I need some help.
Thanks

I tried many counsellors but really the best money I spent was with a really good but effective psychotherapist. All of the counsellors I saw were awful.

No advice, but I have this problem too. Realised I really need counselling, searched on official websites to try and find one, but I live in a city and there were hundreds listed. I didn't have the mental headspace or time to go through them all and try to work out which one would be best (I have previously tried counselling and it didn't work out so I feel like I have a lot riding on choosing the right one). It's a problem if part of the reason you need counselling is an inability to make decisions and too much going on in your head. I wish I could outsource it to someone and say these are my requirements, please draw up a shortlist of who fits best.

All three of you can contact your local branch of Mind here www.mind.org.uk/information-support/local-minds/

Mind is a UK mental health chairty and one of the services they offer in the community is adult counselling. They do charge a small fee - from memory it's about £15 or £20 per session. If you went to a private counselling service you could easily pay three or four times this.

If you have a Mind counsellor and it's not working out for you, you can ring your local branch and they will get you in with a different counsellor without judgement. Their waiting lists are INFINITELY shorter than NHS lists too.

I highly recommend Mind for counselling and have had therapy with them twice over the years.

I dithered over this for six months and, like you, found the choice was huge. In the end I decided to stop dithering, set the criteria to a small geographical radius, read all the biogs, make a shortlist of three, contact one and take it from there.

I’ve had two sessions now and am so pleased I actually got round to it.

Thank you all.
I had looked at mind during my scrolling, I’m going to take a look more closely now.

See if any of the ones that catch your eye offer free initial meet ups. I've personally found that (apart from basics like an appropriate education and some experience in what I suffer from, and location and affordability) what matters most is how I've got along with them and how well I've trusted them. Even one initial session can tell you a lot about how well you feel you might click with someone.

I would recommend looking on the BACP website if wanting to go private.
Also your local NHS should have access to talking therapies although there can be long waits. Most are self referral and are of course free.

Meet up with a few first and see who you click with. Ask lots of questions about how they work and how'd they'd work with you. You've got to shop around.

I used the Bupa consultant finder here when I needed to find mine. Very useful! And definitely a psychotherapist.
